Kruja Castle, beseiged three times by the Ottomans, including under the leadership of Sultan MemhetII, the armies that conquered Constantinople could not conquer Kruja while Skanderbeg and a handful thousand of his men defended.

Fort Umpqua, on the Umpqua River, a short drive from me. It was the southernmost fort during the Fur Trade. The original burned down, it's been in the process of being rebuilt for the last few years. We'll be going there again in a few weeks for Fort Umpqua Days, it's an annual event there. They have lots of reenactors and a regional mountain man/rendezvous group camped out there for the weekend and displaying all their stuff.

A few years ago when there were only the walls and two defensive towers built, I told one of the local guys that the firing slits in the walls of the towers were too narrow to put a muzzleloader through and be able to see through the sights. They got it confirmed with the rendezvous reenactors and enlarged the slits. The logs in the field outside the wall are for visitor parking. The crops outside are part of the fort, the original had crop fields outside the walls. It's coming along slowly but surely. These pictures are from two years ago, I'm not sure how much has been added since then. We'll find out in a few weeks.

Fort Drum has always been my favorite fort. Many people think the turrets were from a battleship, but they were built with far thicker armor. Each turret sustained multiple direct hits by 2000 pound bombs during the allied preparation to retake Fort Drum. Part of one 14 inch gun barrel was blown off, but the turret itself was unscathed and functional. Had the fort been provided a much larger fuel and food stockpile, it could have held out for many more months in 1942, even after Corregidor surrendered. It was basically impervious to conventional bombs.
