A frank interview with a Somali mercenary Adil in the Russian army who was captured in Ukraine. The guy is not stupid, he explains the situation with recruiting foreigners in Russia with ease.

- It’s very simple to get to Russia - just a week and your tourist visa is ready.

- People see advertisements for war and the army everywhere in Russia - many foreigners do not immediately understand that this is an army, and not some kind of security organisation.

- No one gave specifics about whether he would go to the front or remain in Russia. The man was promised a passport and money - for him it was a real dream. He thought he’d live like a King back home.

- Nobody explains the motivation for fighting in Ukraine. Adil had no idea who was fighting whom and for what.

- Training was only 7 weeks, very limited. Adil thought it couldn’t be that he was being deceived. But they were thrown onto the front line almost immediately, and Adil calls these days hell. If you get injured, only God will help you. There's 0% desire to try and save your life.

North Korea has added 20 nukes to arsenal since last year, think tank estimates
Researchers say DPRK has enough fissile material for 90 warheads, expressing concern over pursuit of tactical weapons

North Korea has produced some 50 nuclear warheads and has enough fissile material for up to 90 warheads, a “significant” on-year increase from 2023, according to a new estimate from a Stockholm-based think tank.

The assessment in the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s (SIPRI) 2024 yearbook is up from its estimate of 30 assembled warheads last year and suggests Pyongyang continues to expand its nuclear arsenal despite international condemnation and U.N. sanctions.

“Like several other nuclear-armed states, North Korea is putting new emphasis on developing its arsenal of tactical nuclear weapons,” SIPRI researcher Matt Korda stated in a press release. “Accordingly, there is a growing concern that North Korea might intend to use these weapons very early in a conflict.”

The yearbook states that most of the DPRK’s 50 warheads are “simple fission weapons with possible yields of 10-20 kilotons,” akin to those used in the 2013 and 2016 nuclear tests.

The weapons may have been outfitted with “some more powerful uranium and plutonium composite pit or basic thermonuclear designs,” it adds.

The report estimates that the DPRK probably possesses “sufficient fissile material for an approximate total of up to 90 nuclear devices, depending on warhead design.”

The researchers state that they reached these estimates based on the amount of fissile material (weapon-grade plutonium and highly-enriched uranium) that North Korea is assessed to have, the country’s past nuclear tests and its missile arsenal.

Ryo Hinata-Yamaguchi, a project assistant professor at the University of Tokyo, told NK News that SIPRI’s figures appear realistic, but he raised doubts about the quality of North Korea’s nuclear warheads.

“What is more important than the current stockpile is the rate of the nuclear warhead production, as this will determine North Korea’s nuclear inventory in the years to come,” the expert said.

DIFFERING ESTIMATES

SIPRI is not the only organization to attempt to estimate the size of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, and researchers have offered slightly different assessments.

Researchers Siegfried Hecker and Robert Carlin estimated in Jan. 2024 that the DPRK possesses “a large nuclear arsenal” of potentially 50 or 60 warheads.

The Institute for Science and International Security stated in April 2023 that the number of nuclear weapons in North Korea’s possession could vary from as low as 35 to as high as 63, depending on the type of fission used in such warheads.

While these numbers fall within a similar range, they contrast with higher estimates produced by the RAND Corporation and the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, which suggested that North Korea may have already possessed 67 to 116 nuclear weapons in 2020. Its researchers assessed that the DPRK could increase its stockpile to between 151 and 242 warheads by 2027.

SIPRI’s figures have also fluctuated significantly due to changes in methodology in recent years, with the think-tank placing the number of warheads in the DPRK at 40 to 50 in its 2021 yearbook, at just 20 in the following year’s edition and at 30 as of Jan. 2023.

Hinata-Yamaguchi attributed the different estimates produced by multiple research organizations to varying “interpretations and methodologies.” He added that even with 100 nuclear weapons, the DPRK would still be far from holding the upper hand in a conflict with an adversary like the U.S.

However, some experts have suggested that North Korea may already possess enough nuclear warheads and long-range ballistic missiles to overwhelm U.S. missile defenses, which were originally designed for a more limited nuclear threat.

In its latest report, SIPRI states that North Korea is capable of producing plutonium at the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center north of Pyongyang and highly-enriched uranium at a number of covert facilities.

The Yongbyon complex is known to house a 5-megawatt (MWe) graphite-moderated research reactor and a much larger experimental light water reactor. Both can process plutonium for nuclear warheads.

The report states that it is “more challenging to process fuel derived from light water reactors than from gas-graphite reactors.”

But the Institute for Science and International Security previously found that the Yongbyon 100 MWth light water reactor could potentially produce around 20 kg of weapon-grade plutonium — four or five times the amount of the 5MWe reactor’s output.

The ROK defense ministry also estimated in Feb. 2023 that North Korea’s stockpile of plutonium used in nuclear weapons stood at 70 kg as of the end of 2022, likely enough for a dozen nuclear warheads.

North Korea has larger stockpiles of highly enriched uranium, with SIPRI putting the total at around 250 to 1,500 kg.

But experts have noted that plutonium is “highly desirable for compact, nuclear warheads” — which Kim Jong Un has prioritized as part of efforts to develop lower-yield tactical nuclear weapons.

While North Korea has not carried out a nuclear test since 2016, the U.S. and South Korea assessed in spring 2022 that the DPRK had restored its main nuclear test site, and many experts expect that the country’s military will eventually look to test a smaller warhead for a tactical nuclear weapon, like the one leader Kim Jong Un showed off last year.

SIPRI researchers pointed to the DPRK’s “test of a short-range ballistic missile from a rudimentary silo” in March 2023 and progress in developing “two types of land-attack cruise missiles” designed to deliver tactical nuclear warheads, such as the Hwasal-1 and Hwasal-2.

Trump statements on Ukrainian aid at campaign rally.

Former U.S. President and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump voiced strong criticism of American aid to Ukraine at a campaign rally in Detroit on June 15.
Speaking at the Turning Point USA event, Trump claimed he would "have that (U.S. aid to Ukraine) settled prior to taking the White House as president-elect."
Trump described President Volodymyr Zelensky as "the best salesman" for securing substantial financial support from the U.S.
"I think Zelensky is maybe the greatest salesman of any politician that's ever lived. Every time he comes to our country, he walks away with $60 billion," Trump remarked.
"Now, here's the beauty. He just left four days ago with $60 billion, and he gets home and he announces he needs another $60 billion. It never ends," Trump claimed. "I will have that settled prior to take the White House as president-elect."

I will not vote for Donald Trump if he refuses to support Ukraine's war effort against Russia. I've been a registered Republican since 1980. He needs to have a heart attack or stroke so we can field someone with common sense and some historical perspective.

With Trump you never know exactly what he means when he says things. For example, if by "settled" he means he'll have a number in mind and stops the drip-drip-drip and actually give them what they need to win rather than pussyfoot around, I can get behind that. Trump is big on "winning" so I'd be surprised if that isn't his goal. I'm hopeful he ignores the isolationist wing of the party like he did with the tubby rocket boy.

It’s perfectly clear what he means most of the time, but people make excuses for him regardless.  Hold him accountable.

The plan should be to get him elected first and foremost. Then, hold him accountable to do the right thing along with all the Congresscritters. Without Congressional appropriations, precious little can be sent to aid in the fight. We really need to hold all the elected officials accountable and not sit back the day after the election and think we've done our job just by voting.

Posted in the big Gaza thread but might be of interest here.

The Israel Defense Forces says it has dismantled about half of Hamas's fighting force in Rafah, killing at least 550 gunmen in the area, as the operation against the terror group in the Gaza Strip's southern city continues.

The IDF's 162nd Division has been fighting in Rafah for more than 40 days, initially taking control of the city's eastern outskirts and the border crossing with Egypt in early May. In the second stage of the operation, about a week and a half later, the division captured the Brazil neighborhood.

The third stage of the Rafah offensive saw the IDF take control of the entire Egypt-Gaza border, known as the Philadelphi Route, as well as push into the city's northwestern Tel Sultan neighborhood.

The IDF says it has killed at least 550 gunmen in the Rafah operation, meaning those it was able to physically identify following battles. Many more terror operatives were killed in strikes against buildings and tunnels, it has assessed. Additionally, an unknown number of terror operatives fled the Rafah area as the military began its offensive there.

Of Hamas's Rafah Brigade's four battalions, two — Yabna (South) and East Rafah  —  are considered to be almost completely dismantled, while the capabilities of the other two — Shaboura (North) and Tel Sultan (West) — are somewhat degraded from IDF operations.

Along the Philadelphi corridor, the IDF says it has located hundreds of rockets, including dozens of long-range projectiles aimed at central Israel. Also in the border area, more than 200 tunnel shafts were located, leading to many underground routes.

The IDF says it has located at least 25 "long" tunnels that reach up to the border with Egypt, some of which likely cross into Sinai and had been used by Hamas to smuggle weapons. The military says it is investigating these tunnels further.

Aside from the Philadelphi Route, the IDF says it has established "complete operational control" over the Brazil neighborhood and so-called NPK neighborhood of Rafah — located near the Shaboura and Yabna camps. The latter neighborhood is considered to be a major Hamas stronghold, and the army says troops killed dozens of gunmen inside tunnels there.

The 162nd Division has lost 22 soldiers amid the fighting in Rafah, eight of whom were killed on Saturday in a blast in an armored vehicle that came under attack.

This messaging is somehow supposed to deter Nasrallah...but considering the fact Hezbollah likely assumed this to be true for a decade and a half...I don't think it matters. This is built into the Hezbollah calculous. They know Israel hasn't taken out Sinwar and that Israel is fine with having Hamas leaders in Doha...they can also watch what is happening in Gaza and see how Israel's campaign has left most of Hamas intact in parts of Gaza.

I don't think Hezbollah buys the threats anymore. They've fired 5,000 missiles and rockets at Israel and suffered only minor setbacks of 300 of their personell eliminated and some fields and "launch sites" and empty buildings struck...they know the equation and they have been busy changing it.

Stories about "we will flatten Beirut and make it like Gaza" and "we know your location" doesn't impress them anymore, and probably never did. Hezbollah is a very sophisticated organization and puts a lot of thought into this. It knows the equation. So far it hasn't seen Israel do anything surprising. It is familiar with this Israeli leadership...it's not facing off against Ariel Sharon and Meir Dagan...

How can someone be held accountable after being elected?  The election is the accountability.
Particularly when this candidate’s explicit position is that if elected he can do literally anything he wants without consequences.
Trump’s positions are 100% clear most of the time.  You’re saying elect him and then hope they’re different.
No thanks.

The fact they can be at an altitude of 10-20,000 ft close enough to the front to drop JDAM's speaks to how well the suppression/destruction of russian air defense is going.  It used to be every video showed them scraping the grass in the fields and launching weapons from less 1,000 feet AGL.

If they keep this up maybe in six months we can talk about sending attack helicopters.

Someone needs to tell the Russians we had an arfcom SME who flew 20 years ago say this isnt possible even with F16s..let alone shitty SU24/MIG29s.

They would be slaughtered before thinking about it.

Man did that dude get his dick sucked hard by fanbois here. They were “just asking questions” about “fuck Ukraine” while talking about Zelensky “buying his 20th Yacht” and “Stingers shooting down airliners after Ukraine gives them to terrorists” if we kept sending them.

He told them everything g they wanted to hear…..then it all fell flat.

Russian STRELA misses a UA spotter drone

Ukrainian combat ops under sporadic artillery fire

Kamikazes destroy two Russian T-series tanks.  Second one looks almost like an off-route mine disables it and a kamikaze then hits almost immediately, blowing it up with the crew inside.

Guardian article about Russian video released on Telegram telling about the horrific conditions, 12 out of 100 surviving in his unit, 1 week of training before the front.

The telegram clip in question.  I’m looking for a reddit version.

Two Russian motorcyclists get zapped by kamikazes.  No spotter.

New, smaller UA sea drone with outboard motor.

Azov rotating into a trench.

Russian squad assaults UA positions and is driven off with losses.  At least one small arms kill.

“We could have peace talks tomorrow if Russia leaves Ukraine.”

More Zelensky statements

Canada sending another $38M in aid

Lithuania hands over M113 C&C and demining variants

Leopard 1 SHORAD

Norway donating big bucks to support Ukraine’s electrical system

Ukraine has proposed an “all for all” POW exchange, but Russia is not interested.

Russian manages to blow up a Kamikaze with rifle-fire, but probably still catches frag.

Russian POV, multiple destroyed Russian vehicles driving through Donetsk.

Still pic.  Destroyed Russian T62 in the Kherson region.

Russian POV, laughing at their own logistics

Kind of interesting video, Ukrainians using drone spotting for various weapons for long-range fire, including .50BMG.

I will not vote for Donald Trump if he refuses to support Ukraine's war effort against Russia. I've been a registered Republican since 1980. He needs to have a heart attack or stroke so we can field someone with common sense and some historical perspective.

If he wants me to vote for him for the third time, he shouldn't be saying he wants to cut off aid for Ukraine. He never should have said it in the first place. Not ever.

I’ve seen the video and I don’t understand how Ridge can say it was “fairly conclusively” shot down by BUK/S300.

How can someone be held accountable after being elected?  The election is the accountability.
Particularly when this candidate’s explicit position is that if elected he can do literally anything he wants without consequences.
Trump’s positions are 100% clear most of the time.  You’re saying elect him and then hope they’re different.

Not to derail the thread but you hold an elected official accountable in more ways that just sitting on the sidelines hoping. You contact these elected officials and let them know your position on the various issues. You literally stand zero chance of getting your elected officials to do what's right unless you tell them what that is. That's why it's not enough to vote every so often. You have to be engaged in the process all along. In Trump's case, remember that he was the one that first sent weapons and other aid to Ukraine. It's likely, then, that he sees how vulnerable the rooskies are and would correct "Slow Joe's" dribbling incompetence in prolonging the war. Further, Congress appropriates money. You can't send Ukraine stuff without money to pay for doing so. That's why it's important to stay engaged with Congresscritters as well. Will it be enough? Nobody knows at this point.

I’m not sure who is talking about, but I agree. Hold him accountable.

Of course, the person he is talking about may be one of the Putinistas that got themselves banned.
