I spent a lot of time, as a civilian only, at Fort Hunter Liggett. From an outdoors activity standpoint, not sure how you could do better. All the hunting and fishing on base was phenomenal. But I bet training there in the summer sucks ass with the heat being over a hundred most days. It was an awesome place to go to back in the 80's early 90's. Now, I'm sure it's like most everything else in CA. A complete shithole. Having San Antonio and Nacimiento Lakes nearby was awesome as well. That part of California used to be a true paradise. What a shame.

Without of doubt, San Ysidro or San Sid as the locals call it.  Outstanding laid back command climate and culture, until a little dustup in '97.  Captain Wallce B. Binghamton swooped in and tried to clean house to do things his way but was eventually sent packing.  Best job I ever had.

For context, the thing about these is they are all TRADOC bases.

87% of the people who see these places are there for training programs that are designed to make life suck (basic, NTC, JRTC, etc).

Judging the installation based on the experience in these programs is a bit unfair.

Polk and Irwin are not TRADOC, CTC falls under FORSCOM.

Judging the installation from a military career perspective does need context, but for overall quality of life the fact that the base is dedicated to rotational BCT sized training 10 times a year absolutely has a negative QOL impact.

Yep.  I used to do Gray Flag and they'd put me up in a hotel for those weeks.  Usually Ventura area, which I absolutely love--but the cost of living there is ridiculous, and why I didn't offer it as an option.

Yeah...that was bad.  If you're not familiar with the horizontal stabs of an F/A-18, they're pretty fucking sharp.  My head carries a couple of scars from walking into them at night.
You can see where the jeep hit the aircraft...killed the passenger right away (I heard she was decapitated) and cut the throat of the driver...You can see him bleeding out in the IR.  Got him to the hospital, but too late.

If you're into the "island paradise" thing, it's really hard to beat Guam.  Best diving I've ever done.  I was only there for a couple of weeks at a time while our pilots got their night carrier quals done before deployment, but it seemed like heaven.

This is correct about Army bases.  Imagine watching the wizard of OZ.  being on a army base is like being in Kansas in black and white, but the second you cross the gate on to LITERALLY any AF Base and it turns to bright colors all the mess halls serve real food, people have really nice barracks.  the only thing that is the same is that all the aviators especially the attack pilots are still dicks.

Feldberg radio site.
Highest peak in the black forest.

Also a ski resort.

They paid me to live there and eat food prepared by one of two master chefs.

We did have to ski down to the top of the ski lifts, so it wasn't perfect.

So, it was the best duty station in the Army.

At least for the 6 of us there..

I liked Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah,GA or Ft Stewart or whatever they may be calling it now is near by.

Lots to do in a very historic town and water all around. Not sure as to the school situation though as I was single when I was there.

Fort Story was pretty cool but only spent a week there TDY. Located right on Virginia Beach, BOQ was steps from the sand. Had sand swimming pools on post and the hovercraft would cross the roads with gates like RR crossings and go run on the ocean. Neat place to be for the short time I was there.

I was there from '88 to '91, Public Works Department, back then it was considered "Arduous Duty" many because of the lack of amenities and it only had small medical detachment, any major medical problems and you had to get shipped to Naples. I was right out of "A" School. It was a fun place, smallish tight community, most of us lived out in the local community, largely in the closest town in and around Motta Sant'Anastasia.

My biggest complaint would probably the 500-1 male/female ratio on base and all of the drama associated with it, although I did meet and marry my wife there

The town surrounding the base has a lot to do with it and how they treat GI's.

Also being on a more laid back base with easy going brass would be nice also...as well as having the right MOS.

I liked Ft Sam a lot back in the day...as a kid we lived in Coco Solo Panama back when it was
a beautiful base...now it's a nasty ass ghetto.

Every Air Force base was better than every Navy base I was on.

The joke it the Air Force puts in all the recreational services buildings and then sees if there's money leftover for airplane hangers and runways.

The Navy operates nuclear reactors and spends their money on them. Any money that is leftover they spend it on the crew.
