I was reading through the book Black Hawk Down and decided to find the location of the battle on Google Earth.  Using the map in the book, I found the area in the image below.

To the left of the yellow thumbtack marker is what looks like the remains of a helicopter.  Is this possible?  Does anyone have more detailed information on the location of the events described in the book?

I find it hard to believe that it would still be there, but who knows.

That was my first thought as well, but maybe.

That's what I thought, but I saw a documentary a few years ago where a reporter returned to the site years later and the helicopter was still there (what was left of it, anyway).

I would think the locals would have stripped everything and carted it away by now for sure.

Somalia doesn't even have a functioning gov't.  What makes you think removing the helicopter wreckage is a priority?

I was over there from October 9th to November 12th 1993 (A member of BLT 1/8 22MEU aboard the USS ASHLAND LSD-48), and according to reports that I heard over the radio net, Delta/Marine Force Recon dropped back by the fuselage and demo'ed it.
That was nearly 14 1/2 years ago, given the propensity for skinnies to strip everything metal or plastic from anything tied down or not, it is highly unlikely that even a single crumb of that Blackhawk is left.

Its a priority to people who use the remains as materials to build their shacks.  I'm sure its not there anymore unless it serves as a reminder of that day to the people of Mogadishu.

With the value of scrap aluminum being what it is Vs. the economy in Somalia, I doubt that anything remains of either the of the two Blackhawks.

Yep.  I saw the same show.  It was all over grown but it was still there.

It would be awesome if people could find more google earth images of famous battles and post them here

as i understand, via an article read a few years ago, the wreckage is in the possession of a local warlord, and surrounded by bobbed wire, was kept at his residence.

the same holds for the Falklands,

and probably everywhere else; the remains of war, and military presence, are everywhere.
