Can someone give me info on the difference between the two. Does it come down to old and new style etc..   Looking to replace my collapsable stock with a fixed stock on a RRA lower.
Thanks

The A1 is a little bit shorter, and the A2 is a little longer. Other than that I don't think there is a difference. Some of the A1's came with a trap door buttstock, some didn't. I think all of the A2's did come with a trapdoor buttstock. The materials between the two might be different but not sure.

Make sure you get the A1 screw for the back. The A2 screw is longer and will play havoc with your bolt trying to get it to fully open. BTDT.

There are other differences as well. The A1 is shorter like posted. Most A1s dont have the trap door and seem a bit thinner. Also the A1 doesnt have the cheese gratter for a butt pad, like the A2. The A2 is pretty aggresive. Most A1s are smooth plastic. A2s butt plate are metal, which means they are a lil heavier as well. The Sp1 is about as light as you can get a full metal and plastic AR.

I'm pretty sure that the A2 buttplate is plastic, at least the one I used to have was...

The materials are different as well.  The A1 is a thin glass-reinforced plastic shell filled with foam.  The A2 is a stronger design using stronger materials.  Colt used to make a "CS" stock that was dimensionally the same as the A1, but made to A2 specs––Best of both worlds.

To confuse things a little bit further, Cav Arms makes what they call a C1 stock.

Similar to the above mentioned colt stock, it is A1 length but A2 style with some other modifications like a larger trap door.

As far as conventional fixed stocks go, the Cav Arms version is my favorite.

What else do you need if you want to order one of those? That's not complete, is it?

You need the following:

Buffer tube (rifle length)

Buffer spring

Buffer.

And why you have the rear of the receiver uncovered, I recommend the rear detent mod.

Is the Cavalry Arms C1 as strong as the A2?

ETA:  Cavarms includes the short upper screw.

I just ordered a Cav Arms C1 in coyote brown.   It said in the description that it comes with the proper length screw.  Also the A1 and A2 share the same buffer tube.  The A2 has a spacer that looks like a washer that is usually a couple buck extra to get the correct length.

I just purchased a Colt A1 butt stock, who has the correct short A1 screw available if I need one?

After searching a few places PKFirearms was the only vendor who had everything I needed and in stock (rifle buffer tube, rifle buffer, rifle spring) to complete my Cav Arms C1.

Here is a link to the parts http://www.pkfirearms.com/store/get_items.aspx?type=0&term=58&pg=3

Cav Arms A1 length stock made of A2 material with a real A2 butplate on a Colt A2 rifle.
Good stuff and helps your cheekweld.
* Note the way Colt spent the time color matching this factory gun..

Millitary buttplates are plastic with aluminum trap doors.
Commercial butt plates seem to be made from softer plastic and the trap doors are plastic as well.

FWIW the latest replacement A2/A4 stocks come with plastic trap doors.  GI, that is.

The Cav Arms trapdoors are rubber with a rubber hinge and lock, I wouldn't trust them to hold anything for long.

About 2/3's way down is a photo essay I did comparing the A1 and A2 stocks and hardware.
