I've been on the search for a single shot shotgun for the past week to have as a all around SHTF, put food on the table tool. Been watching some Dave Canterbury videos on black powder reloading and centerfire adapters to use ( 22lr, 9mm, .410, 20G .... Etc) Been seeing some around 75 to 200 bucks used and wanted to know what to look for and what to stay away from ? Is current ammo safe to shoot in some of these 100 yr old shotguns ? Have my eye on a Ted Williams model 101 12G with poly choke for 90 bucks.

Buy a used 870 Remington. Way better bang for your buck.

Look for a cheap pawnshop H&R, etc if you want one.  I like having one handy as a really cheap knockabout shotgun.

SHTF will never happen, but if it does there are better options.

The Hatfield single-shots from Walmart are getting generally good reviews for ~$100.

I kinda want one in .410 for shits & giggles

I want one in 12 gauge myself. I love single shot 12 gauges for utility purposes. Yes, you can get a repeater for not a whole lot more, but there is something I enjoy about the simplicity of a break action shotgun. They work great for sluicing grouse during deer season without having to worry about leaving your heirloom bird gun in the truck. They are perfect for picking squirrels out the trees or nailing the raccoon who is pesterinrg your hen house. I really miss my Topper 12 gauge, but I can't find a decent one for under $150.

H&R, NEF, Stevens, any of the old store brands like Ted Williams, Riverside, Revalation etc are going to be your best bet. This is an area where I avoid the foreign stuff.

I've seen a H&R 1900 12G for $100 obo, it's the one with the tab that swings out to takedown the shotgun. Also seen a Ted Williams 12G with Poly Choke for $95 at a LGS. Can modern ammo (OO, Slugs) be fired through these old shotguns or do I have to go with low power loads ?

Ithaca Model 66.

Have one in 20 gauge.

Was my first shotgun as a kid. Always went bang and easy to maintain.

Available in 410, 20, and 12 I believe.

I have an H&R in 20 ga  for that purpose and I'll use it this fall.
Saw one used at Cabelas last week and thought about picking it up as a spare I like the 1st so much.

I wouldnt shoot high velocity ammo out of the 1900, standard velocity would probably. The Ted Williams is probably good to go with anything.
