At one time I could, can't anymore..working on getting some upper body strength back.
When I was at my peak in the Army in 2006, I weighed 158lb (best I recall) I'm 6'2" and could bench that...but my body fat percentage was like 3%. And that would have been my max I assume. Never did find my true max but I did do 3 reps of 215 or so once so I'm sure at that time I could have do everything 1 rep of 10lb heavier? Now I'm 200lb and it's probably 13% lol... age and lack of exercise will do that in a hurry. |
I don't lift any heavier than 225 any more, and tend to just use dumbbells most of the time vs a flat bar, then my shoulders don't hurt as bad, lol
Two plates per side? That's my current max. I don't really do flat bench work anymore - in college it was at 265.
Just got home from the gym.
2 sets of 8 at 225 and 2 at 255. I'm 56 and weigh 250. |

I don't know. I will check the next time I go to the gym. But if a fatty can do a push-up does that count?
Yes, but I do bench presses using the smith machine. I've been lifting weights for 15 years so its more about safety. I can do 225 on the bench but don't like to. I can rep 300 a few times. Used to do more but I'm getting older.

I have never had great upper body strength. I have been power lifting for just about a year. I did 5X5 for 30 weeks and am now doing 5/3/1.
I am 6'3" and now 205 lbs, down from 250lbs. I have long arms, I can't bench worth a crap. My current 1 rep max is 185 lbs. |

Competitive bodybuilders are on stage at 3-4% and it takes insane dedication, time, and effort to get there. Not to mention the extreme health issues people face trying to maintain that for any period of time. Quoted:
There sure are a lot of NFL caliber athletes that post here 225 is hardly impressive and no where near "NFL caliber". The combine uses 225 because it's essentially a bottom of the barrel weight that everyone should be able to do for multiple reps. For what it's worth, Larry Allen could do 225... for 43 reps straight. Most people who lift regularly with a decent routine should be able to move 225 in a year or so. |

I am a desk jockey so I am satisfied with being able to do 240lb.
It is kind of unnerving to max with a spotter who can only do 95lbs however |
Right now I would only be able to say maybe.
I pretty much have switched to dumbbells now though as I don't have a spotter anymore. I just got a set of Ironmaster dumbbells that should be here on Thursday...I am stoked!!! |
When I was in high school. 5 sets of 5 at 225 when I was 5'8" and 165lbs myself. Now no.
Right now, probably just barely.
A year ago I was a lot more consistent in my lifting and at my best did 235lbs 3x5. My PR was 265. I'm back to it now but it will take some time. |
Maybe once. Just started lifting regularly again about 7 months ago, and not as frequently as I should. I can do sets at 175#. I should be able to do one or two at 200# no problem. #225 might be pushing it. Give me a few more months. Even when I was lifting in high school I only got to 205#.

I never get freaked out about heavy lifts. I put whatever safety devices I can, in place and lift. I have a power rack at home, that extends out far enough to use as a "catch" while benching. Won't save my chest, might save my neck though. |

Can I? Probably. Do I want to? Not really. Can't remember the last time I stepped inside a gym.

225 is nothing. Its a warm up bar. NFL players can press it 30 or 40 times. One player did it 46 times. Its four 45's and a bar. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I think I would run out of wind before I ran out of gas with 225. Arfcom lifting threads are always fun. |

Stop being weak. View Quote Boy some are you guys are weak. Im a 59yo cripple and can still bench 225 easily. I do flys with 100 lb dumb bells and dont really consider either impressive. When I was a kid I weighed much less and lifted far more. Time to man up bitches and get on some weights. You cant rely on a gun all the time. Right before I retired as a dried up old man I got in a fight with a 25yo drunk who was 6'5" and still I conquered. I got hurt but I conquered. Viking up!............damn! |

Before I started my undergrad just over 2 years ago, I could bench flat/incline and shoulder press 330 lbs straight bar and 2 x 120 lb dumbells w/ reps between 12-8.
Now I just started back on it with dumbells at 2 × 70 lbs. The free weight dumbells is where it's at for stabilizer muscles and really reduces the strain on spotters, because the free weights can be pushed to the sides away from the body one gets pooped out lol |
Not sure, I lift hay bails all day long though. I have found it to be more functional.
Many years back I tried the bench press at school. It had 3 plates on each side, not sure how much that was. I did a dozen reps. I weighed like 145 at the time. |

My best ever was 505 for 2 back when I was 45 yrs old.
Motorcycle accident took that all away |

I'm 43 and I probably can. I do reps at 185 regularly. I'm sure I can bench 225 once if I tried. But I won't try because I don't want to destroy something lol. Again, 43 will do that to you.

6 months ago I was doing 5 sets of 10 reps with 225-245.....today, maybe a few reps...got lazy
