View Quote I seem to recall from way back, kuraki provided something showing the granular structure on both 154CM and CPM154. The CPM 154 was much more evenly spread supporting the idea that it would have better edge retention, so it stands to reason it would be harder to sharpen. But I seem to recall the person reviewing the granular structure determined in testing, no prominent difference in performance. Which if that is the case, I guess, why bother. I don't think I have had any CPM154 in quite some time. Bunch of 154CM. Larin Link |

BRK was using it as one of their main stainless steels on their big fixed blades (but I wouldn't be surprised if they switch over to S45VN entirely now that that is available). From the makers side it is easy to work with, grinds easy and takes a nice shine. Performance wise it has good durability, takes a nice edge, decent retention, it is easy to sharpen. It is American made (Emerson is big on that). Emerson is all about making his stuff as easy as possible for people to work with. If you are in the middle of nowhere, you will still probably be able to find a Phillips head or slotted screwdriver to work on your knife if needed. Dull? Sharpen it on the top edge of your car window or the bones of your enemies. No diamonds necessary (but they do make it easier). He has used S35VN on limited runs and dealer exclusives and I think on the XHDs, which is still in line with the brand image, otherwise they used ATS-34 up until ~2000ish and then went to 154. It fits with their whole brand persona. Pretty sure he uses 154 on his customs too. Would I like to see them switch over to S45VN? Yeah. Will 154 stop me from getting them? Nope. I like 154. It may also have been new edge chips, like with Spydercos. Sharpen down to the good material.
Or JABA was being purposely abusive. It isn't 3V. |
