KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Bankrupt Interstate Bakeries is closing a bakery in New Bedford and cutting 1,400 more jobs in its ongoing effort to cut costs.
The Kansas City-based company -- which makes lunchbox staples Hostess Twinkies and Wonder Bread -- filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last September.
In addition to closing the Massachusetts plant, the company also plans to consolidate production, delivery routes, depots and thrift stores throughout the Northeast.
The moves are expected to be complete by mid-August, pending approval from a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge.
