Let's say the SHTF and you lose your tactical wheelbarrow in a tragic boating accident. Your .38 is gone but you manage to save your 10/22. Now you are left with only a .22 for defensive purposes.
Let's also say you have an extensive ammo fort from years of .22 hoarding so you have basically any commercially available ammo at your disposal. Which round do you choose as the most effective against bipedal aggressors? Something lighet weight and super high velocity like Yellow Jackets? Extra heavy rounds like the 60 grain Aquila SSS? CCI's segmented HP that splits into three pieces? |
If I have all that .22 I trade/barter for something else. Being "stuck" is all in your head.
Whichever one I can fire 10-30 times in rapid succession without malfunctioning.

Wolf Match Target..Although mine does like CCI Subsonic Hollow Points.

CCI Velocitors(40gr 1435fps HP) without a doubt....they're plenty accurate and one of the hardest hitting .22s.

I'm thinking probably the CCI Velocitors or the Winchester Hyper Speed, a 40 grain HP at 1435 fps.
CCI CB Shorts.
I don't own a 10/22 My Marlin 39A is pelletgun quiet with CBs. I killed a feral hog with a Remington Short. No doubt a CB would do the same. If I could only shoot one 22 for the rest of my life ... make it a CB. TRG |

Win. 40gr. Power point.
Developed in Australia for whacking Marsupials. Opens up nicely in Gelatin, has the necessary recoil impulse to cycle Semi-Autos. Accurate on Par with T-22...it's parent. Just saying. I know what my stash looks like, and it's way too short on Power Points. |

shot placement is crucial with the .22LR
I've had excellent luck with these http://www.winchester.com/library/news-feed/Pages/Varmint-HE.aspx I prefer them over traditional HPs for shooting varmints around the farm Why? In my experience they kill faster. Very easy to inflict a lethal hit with a .22 LR but have it take a long time to die This Winchester load has worked very well for me.... |

View Quote I think my best 'burst' from my LM7 was 60 rounds. Never have been able to get it to run properly. I really need to sell it TRG |

View Quote Fake. Everyone knows that there isn't enough .22LR to do that. |

.22 cal guns are ammo sensitive, so reliability would be the #1 consideration. That said, it would probably be something CCI. The Aguila SSS are dirty, and not accurate.
i would hope to lose my 10 22 and end up with one of my Winchester model 52Cs, ammo would be Eley black box.
I have shot single hole 5 shot groups with less than 0.05 spread, wind becomes the factor in your group size |
Thought about that back in the day. I would've never thought 22 ammo would ever to hard to get
Ammo wouldn't matter, as long as it was being fired from an AR180.
Norrel trigger pack and 50 rd drum, and whatever ammo is reliable.

Oh look, another thread to piss me off about the 10,000 Mini-Mags that got stolen from my dad's place.

View Quote I think you discovered the source of the .22 shortage. |

Hold the 10/22 by the barrel and swing it with all the force you've got.

Aguila SSS are longer than a standard .22LR. Most .22LR firearms are 1/12-1/14" twist, meaning the SSS don't stabilize. I have bricks of the stuff & none will shoot under a couple inches & keyhole at 25 yards.
It also doesn't feed well. The company recommended 1/7" rifling--especially if using a suppressor--to avoid baffle strikes. All that said--there's a definite difference when a 60gr hits the target (it literally wobbles) vs a 40gr. Mass is always good. My .22 ammo choice is CCI Minimags--feeds in everything I own. |

Federal bulk packs. Quantity is a quality.
My brain would still say, "save the good stuff and use up the Federal." |

CCI Stingers, though mini-mags seem to hum on my 22's. I did pickup some Segmented and Velocity, haven't been out to shoot them though.
SR22 and a SW15-22. |

I believe I've read on here that with .22 you want LRN or copper RN for penetration purposes. That HP's simply do not penetrate to a reliable depth.

HV 40 gr LRN will penetrate the best. You could do far worse. Just make sure you're an expert at quickly clearing failure to fires. |
