She had multiple rows of ribbons on today.
Can anyone tell me what they denote, and how widespread this practice is in the LE community?

It lets you know how long she's had to wait at the different buffet lines.

The various colors denote different dog breeds, the stripes within the color denote the number killed.

Omar Kadafi must have designed their uniforms bling-wise. I know there is a Omar involved in making those porker's uniforms at any rate. |

I think it's officially known as "flair'.
she's required to wear that many to keep up with her coworkers. wonder how many ribbons the head librarian has?? |

We had this thread awhile back just like the Larue target thread. IIRC DC Police has a medal that is the same as one of the WWII theater medals, so someone was trying accuse the Chief of Stolen Valor, but the medal company that makes these things just reused the ribbon design for something else, like going 30 days without spilling coffee on your tie.....

They are awards for various things. What each one denotes would not be standardized and would be specific to that police agency. They are usually only worn on formal uniforms.
|
|
Well they're awards, but a lot of them appear to be given out for taking part in, like, doing their job.

Just another step in the trend of having the police look like the military.

I read the article. WTF. You get medals for attending meetings. Talk about a third world dictator look.
|

Honestly, the whole medal thing I never really understood. It's mainly an east coast thing. You should see what some of their FIRE CHIEFS wear.
I've only worn two. |

Mike In Philly years ago I used to see a lot of older cops wearing their military ribbons from Vietnam. I asked one and he told me they are supposed to wear any they were awarded in the service. |
