I can think of 5, none of them were really topped in the time period That they were in by anybody
First I'll start with the easy ones The Ferrari F40 McLaren F1 And the Duesenberg SJ Nex two are a little more interesting in some ways. What happens when you give Frenchmen and Germans a blank check and you tell him to make the most luxurious car possible You get the Bugatti Royale and Mercedes 600 W100 Both of those two were perhaps the most ridiculous vehicles ever built for their time period, hell even when you compare them to today they are both outrageous, the Bugatti Royale is a giant piece of Steel with hand-crafted interior, and the w 100 has hydraulic controls ... for everything Nowadays there is nothing quite to the level of insanity that those two were Maybe if Rolls-Royce or Mercedes made 25 million dollar sedan, with the most ridiculous levels of craftsmanship and Technology I couldn't even begin to describe, then maybe I could add another to the list, that's basically what it would take to equate to those two Can you guys think of any others? |

Bugatti Veyron in the 2000s.
Attached File This did to performance in the 2000's what the F1 did in the 90s. Took other manufacturers years to catch up. |

Lambo Countach or an old car like the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost.

are we sticking to just production vehicles?
Or can we dig up some truly custom automotive fuckery? |

The Audi Quattro might be a candidate, although it may not be quite “outrageous” enough.

I'm gonna say now and the Jeep Wrangler... you can't get much more anachronistic than that in a new automobile.
Still love them for being 50 years behind the technology curve ... though I can't figure out why I actually paid a premium to have the least technologically advanced vehicle on the market. |

I always wanted an Isuzu Vehicross, very cool designed off road rig

Shelby 427SC Cobra. I don't think anything else has been as outrageously as much overkill as that car during that time. 0mph to 100mph to 0mph in the same time it took a similar vintage 427 Corvette to get from 0mph to 100mph. Outrageous overkill. https://www.cobracountry.com/wp-content/uploads/Cobra/Luongo-CSN061/Luongo-01-BS-1142x697.jpg View Quote |

In a global context, the Ford Excursion.
Want a family hauler that had a bigger engine and more towing capacity than most European delivery trucks? Want one of the only non super car V10s? Excursion. |

I was never impressed by it, in my opinion it is in no way like the F1 or the F40 The current Koenigsegg regera I think it's fairly close but it is still not pushing it hard enough View Quote I agree that it isn't like the F1 or F40. Those are basically race cars for the road. The Veyron was a new thing. Bentley luxury with performance higher than the F1. Personally I would rather drive an f40 (my choice for the 80s) or the F1 (my choice for the 90s). Nothing in the 2000s though tops the Veyron. Edit: the Agera didn't break the Veyron speed record until 2017. Amazing. |

Quoted: I'm not getting the 25 million comparison. Didn't the Bugatti Royale cost in the neighborhood of $50k when new back in the late 20's? That's what--maybe $750k in today's dollars? 25 million today (or perhaps 1.5-2 million in the 1920's) is yacht money not car money. Right? View Quote |

Any of the Group B cars they sold due to homologation rules. Ford RS200, etc.

Back in the day (1970s), the mid-engine Ford Pantera (De Tomaso Pantera) was a fairly fast/hot car. Saw one on the road last year. Nice ones are over $100K now.

I was always fond of the Bricklin SV-1 (in the safety green).
Attached File (ETA: It was outrageously safe. Collapsible bumpers, couldn't get going fast enough to get out of its own way, etc). |
