That's just surface rust on the underside of the car. Like...every car I have ever seen that isn't brand new has that. "Rust" involves the actual body of the car. |

It appears to be all surface rust. I'd be okay with it. I'd spray whatever I could see with something like Fluid Film and run it.

All that stuff that has rust was likely left "natural' from the oe. That said there's no fucking way I'm dealing with a northern vehicle period.

Doesn’t look bad from the pics. Just surface rust. Would take a lot of labor to clean it up if it bothered you.

I’d run that no problem. Don’t even need to oxyacetylene bolts off or nothing. |

That’s real rust. Look at the hardware and the weld seam on the subframe. Montana cars didn’t look like that, might be one owner but where in Montana?
You aren’t going to “clean it up”. Taking it to a southern environment should help it not progress much more, but there’s no going back from that. I owned a lot of cars and trucks in Montana and worked on several thousand more. We didn’t have rust problems. Being registered in Montana means about zero, it’s the best state to register your stuff and avoid taxes. Entire websites to do it for you. Cali address, Montana plates, Tennessee parking sticker, etc etc etc. |

Doesn’t look bad to me. Surface rust on underbody components is pretty normal after a couple of winters. That wouldn’t give me pause at all.

That's not rust! Attached File Take a look at this brake caliper. The one on the ground. That's what the ENTIRE underside of this truck and every other vehicle looks like here. It sucks, and eventually it will make the vehicle fail. But in 25+years, and will never happen once you bring it south. Don't sweet it, if you have a good deal take it and run! I'm always jealous when I YouTube some sort of repair on a mid 2000s vehicle, and some guy in MS has a video of a 2005 F150 that looks factory new underneath! |

What year?
I mean, it ain't ideal but that's not bad for a MN car. As others said, it's just surface rust, you could wash the shit out of it and spray the undercarriage down with Fluid Film on occasion, I would wager the car will last to its normal life expectancy in GA. Was it a solid deal? Do you love the car otherwise? Could you source a brand new or cleaner used version in your price range? |

This thread makes me chuckle about the time I bought a 2000 F350 PSD for cheap, but probably too much rust.
Don't freak out OP because I'm talking "16 years old and 360K miles, oh did I mention it came out of Canada?" Good truck, motor had no blowby and refused to die. I drove it for quite some time, getting my money out of it but the rear leaf springs were wore out and starting to fail. I was driving down the main thoroughfare in town and crossed a "major" intersection which has a quick rise to match the roads, I whistle up over the bump and hear a CLANG CLANG clang clang clang...... Look in the mirror and see a broken chunk of leaf spring sliding through the intersection behind me. But yeah OP, that car ain't nearly that far along. |

30 year old vehicles have less rust than that down here
It’s just what they are used to OP, it’s fine. Hit it with some fluid film and drive it, it won’t get worse down here |

I went south, to find the vehicle I was looking for, without rust. Those fasteners may not look bad now, but a few years from now, when you want to take them apart, you'll need the blue wrench. Rust doesn't stop. |

This thread just further reminds me how much I hate road salt and even worse, that brine shit they spray now. I’ve spent time father north in colder climates where they don’t salt the roads as the low temps render the salt ineffective and everyone seems to manage just fine. Around here though if there’s even a hint of flurries in the forecast MODOTs out there spraying the roads down with liquid vehicle cancer.

have a standing rule that if it comes from where theres snow and salt its a pass no matter how good rest of the car is missed a lot of good deals because of this sucks but I think its saved me a lot of headache in the long run |

Back in the day we didn't worry about rust. Chicken wire/Bondo made rust disappear.

Eta: I've bought older used vehicles from Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Massachusetts. THOSE had rust. |

I see no reason to keep it unless you got an absolute steal and you don’t plan to keep it. None of our cars have anywhere near that level of rust.

My concern would not be what you can see but the areas that you can not see or haven't been washed out by summer rains/puddles since it was new. Those are the spots that will show up unannounced.

It’s been driven in salt. It will get worse each year from now on and you can’t stop it. It’s not a keeper. It’s a drive it every day until other things break. |
