Really, not that much to escape from, other than the wife, but it’s all I think about all summer.
Built a rack for the SxS, no getting a truck in my spot without risking damage. Packing the 10x12 wall tent this year so any extra storage will be needed. Took a big nylon tipi last year, but really miss the headroom of the wall tent, but it packs up as big as an army duffel bag. Attached File Been shooting out back most nights. These lit nocks are very nice, no change to POI. I need to put the quiver back on for the last few weeks of training. Attached File Did a second scouting run last weekend, tons of fresh elk sign and jumped 4 just bopping around. Got hammered with an epic storm that caught us 2 miles from camp. Rain/hail and lightning so close I could have pissed my pants and not known it. Soaked to the bone. Attached File Attached File Cut poles for the wall tent and stashed them and some supplies up there. Never built a log frame, should be interesting. The excellent internal steel frame is huge and heavy. Attached File Trying for this. |

Jealous. Be sure to share pictures of the adventure and results of your hunt.
Brush up on your square and shear lashing skills for the log frame. Happy hunting! |

Thanks cracker. Very blessed to have this stuff near home for sure.

Would love to hunt big game sometime. Do you have any advice for someone that's never done it? For me, I'd need a DIY hunt on public land as I don't have any big game hunting friends or land

Gun control is like trying to eliminate drunk driving by making it illegal for sober people to own cars

It gets busy, it is awesome and I’m hunting some of the most heavily used areas in the state. Plenty of room for all. For a first timer solo it can be a formidable task, but they do it all the time. There was a truck with NJ plates at one of my spots last year, and a young dude comes out of the trees with his last elk quarter. He had never even been out here before or hunted elk. With a bow no less. He hacked those hind quarters in half just to get them out. Big animals. If you do rifle a whole other problem can hit then, snow/bad weather. Rokslide forum has all the answers you seek. |

After a few years of looking for a tree straight enough to be our ridge pole we started bring a 2x4.
Made things much easier. What tipi did you use? Looking at a seek and maybe another maker. Needs to be able to handle down pours. |

Last year was the seek 8 man. Dang it packs small for a 16’ diameter. Really a lot of room inside, just not a lot of standing room, particularly with the stove (seek xl) next to the pole.
Completely staked out it takes some serious weather including rain. Everything stays dry. The condensation gets kinda heavy on the interior during wet periods, wood stove helps keep it at bay. A propane heater would be miserable then. Attached File Attached File Attached File Pretty much a palace for one guy. |

View Quote Did you use the half liner or full liner? My problem is the wife liked the used 12x12 alakanak tent we were given and she wants room. May still buy a ice fishing tent and have a stove jack sewn in. |

Any liner would help with condensation, but I have neither.

Just got in from week one. Great trip, haven’t closed the deal on an elk. Yet. Hot and dry, after all the damn rain we are wishing for more. Very crunchy moving out there.
A few pics and I need to get back to work so I can get back up the mountain. Moving in was a comedy, load was not secured at all. Had a cooler Of cold drinks and ice go flying. Lost a few beers to the trail lol. Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File Nobody camped within a mile. Lots of ATV traffic over the holiday but not much now. We pull water from that spring, probably doesn’t need filtered, but we do. |

Back home again. Hot/dry has turned to wet/colder. Rain has been constant since Tuesday, good stuff. Still not in rut, but soon.
A couple close calls with elk, but no deal. Almost had the shot Monday right at sunset. Called in a decent bull but couldn’t get a shot. Killing grouse every chance with judo points. Need to get some fish too. Getting tired of stuff like this , pre cooked burgers and pulled pork. Attached File The grouse is tasty. Attached File Wallows are too numerous to just sit on one. Attached File Lots of great hunting within a mile of camp, SxS only got used last week to get firewood. Logging 3-9 miles a day on foot. 9 miles off trail up here will test you. Typical day pack load is 25 lbs. burning thru a gallon of water a day. Get back to camp spent, a beer a bourbon and a quick dinner by 2100 and lights out. Get a good cot and pad and sleep well. 21 year old canvas tent still no leaks. Attached File Water plant. Spring water, but I filter anyway. Haul the water in via the 5 gallon shower bag and put it in the 1 gallon filter bag. Attached File Can’t wait to get back up. |

That solar thing I did for lighting/charging is working well. 120w of solar and a 35AH deep cycle. We use OnX on our phones and Inreach for comms.
