An update on the camo 901 camo rifle
Trying to do some research but it is limited due to these being newer rifles and not ‘collector’ grade yet so not alot of articles about the differences.
The CM901 debuted at shot in 2009 and the one you see in a few articles at the time is serial CM001069. I was told by another sources that this rifle being CM001005 was made in 2010. Colts serial numbers have never been the most accurate….
This digital camo pattern was then tested in the IC trials in 2011 also seen on the other 5.56 rifle in the pictures being a partial IC contract rifle.
The CSASS trials were not until 2014 so I do not think this rifle was used in that testing. Also pictured is the tan anodized CSASS rifle
Another note of interest is the patent number on this upper forgings. It comes back to the SCAR trials which was supposed to be a removable magwell for different calibers. Colt ended up changing the design to the magwell adapter that we have today instead. The CM901 at SHOT had the patent number milled off but would assume it would be the same. The pictures inlcuded are of the SCAR proposal in 2004/2005 range
The barrel on this upper is also unique. Don’t know if it’s stainless or just unfinished. It has no markings on it anywhere.
It is also interesting to see the magwell marking differences in the 2 models.
Along with this anodized 901, I also grabbed a serial #5 901 which the magwell is the last picture. That is an MCC prefix and the serial looks like it was added later or something else going on with it.
