I am very interested in this
Look forward to seeing the rest of the process and the finished product. Great post |

I was watching 'Into The Forge' tonight, so keep the pics coming and thanks for sharing!

This reminds me of the metal project my dad always talked about but never did- a sword made from :
1. The weapon of his enemies (in this case an SKS barrel) 2. Meteoric iron 3. Minnesota iron (he was from Minnesota) (Of course it would probably need carbon and other stuff too) I think he has the components somewhere (still going through all his shit) ETA: by the way, OP, you're awesome... |
|
I have no idea what or how you're doing that but I really want to see the finished product!
Wasn't there some news article about some gun that was going to be made out of a meteorite a few weeks ago? |

Just came in from the forge. Will be posting some more shots shortly..

Video is taking forever to upload. Nothing fancy just some power hammer action.

So fucking in OP should sign up for Forged in Fire View Quote Yea, I know some of the contestants. JD Smith is one of my mentors. He did not follow the instructions and washed out in the first round. He would have been great to see in the finish. I really have no desire to do the show. Did think about it but decided against it. Too many things I don't like about the process. |

Aside from looks, is there any benefit to using meteorite material versus anything else?

Quoted: Aside from looks, is there any benefit to using meteorite material versus anything else? View Quote I'm curious as to what metals make up the meteorite material. That being said, it's a pretty damn cool and unique idea. I don't see such a knife competing for any utilitarian awards, but as a bad ass collection piece, I'd be really interested in owning one. |

There are actually disadvantages to using meteorite. No advantages at all. There can be a lot if impurities that will cause problems. That is one reason I smashed them. This broke up the minerals that would have caused problems. It is only the novelty of using an extraterrestrial material. Some think it gives supernatural abilities and performance. That is why they sell so well in China.
I had a chemical analysis of the campo I have. It was 96percent iron 3 percent nickel and 1 percent trace elements. Pretty pure material. There is enough carbon in the 1095 to migrate into the meteorite. It will create about a 1080 steel. This will allow full hardening. It will be a perfectly serviceable knife. If it were pure nickel then I would cause problems. I will not allow carbon migration and will not harden. Pure nickel at the edge would be too soft. |

I wonder how long those rocks had been floating around in space before landing on earth?

Source for round edge bastard files?
I just dumped a couple hundred bucks on a nice variety but didn't see any round edges when I was shopping. |
