i got a colt sporter in 7.62x39 many years back and it has gone thru a lot of changes.
collapsing stock. 5.56 upper. JP trigger and hammer Badger tac latch Hogue grip. knights RAS ambi safety phantom tac latch. when the ban went away i got a new lower and all the new crap went on it. now the colt has all the factory pats back on it and sits quietly in the back of the gun safe. |

Stickman, bolts are a wear item. Sooner or later they will all break. Colt makes a better bolt than DPMS, I know that for a fact.

+1 I've had 8 Colts since '71 and I'm not a Kool-Aid drinker, just a loyal fan. I currently have a M16A2 clone with all Colt parts and a 6721 A3 Tactical Carbine. I like my LMT and I'm going to buy Stag Arms, Armalite, RRA and other brands next time. |

Actually, the Bolt problem came about due to pitting on a specific area of the bolt behind the locking lugs closest to the extractor.(exactly where all three bolts in the pic failed) There's some thread on here about the Army's Bolt failure analysis.

I don't really agree with Colt being better than every company, but I do own a 6520. I see Colt as equal to the top tier brands and thats it.

Exactly, these bolts didn't have all that many rounds through them. While I agree that Colt is swell, I think people need to remember that it still isn't magic. |

Colt SP1 carbine purchased in 1978, class3d and converted to a "real" XM177 clone in 1979. Finally found a big hole forward assist upper a few years back, so now it's an XM177E2 clone.
My only AR for over 20 years, but now have an M16 (smoothside upper) clone, all Colt except for the lower (Rock River), and an M16A1 clone, also all Colt except for the lower (Century marked Conti lower). If Colt would abandon those damned oversized holes, I'd probably give in to the temptation and replace the lowers w/Pony pieces, but until they do, it's aftermarket lowers all the way.

I don't see C MP on those bolts. How do we know they are not Bushmaster or RRA bolts, or Oly bolts? Where's the proof? (no pun intended). Wheres the background documentation? Why not post that too? Or don't you have any? At least support your dissent with more than a vague image of unknown composition and origin of three broken bolts. That proves little except that you don't care for Colt products, and we already know that.  Everything mechanical breaks or wears out eventually, sure as death and taxes. |

A lack of faith doesn't make it any less true, they are Colt.
You are incorrect with your assumption that I don't like Colt. I don't recall ever saying that, nor do I find it to be an accurate representation of my views. I do not blindly worship Colt as others here seem to, but that hardly makes me hate any of my Colts. As far as documentation, to be blunt, I have it, but its not an option for me to give it to you on a public board. If it was something would affect you, it would be different. |

Colt makes a great product, especially when it comes to the AR line of Rifles and 1911 pistols. Just because some choose to spend thier money on an good, battle proven brand of rifle ( not to say that other manufacturers aren't) . Doesn't necessarily make them "blind worshipers" of the colt rifle line. Just given the chance between one brand or the other they would choose colt even for the extra money. Which isn't a bad thing. Many colt owners own other various manufacturers rifles as well. I know I do. |

I own two Colts. My 6520 is becoming one of my favorite rifles. However, like Stickman I was less than impressed with my Match HBAR's buffer.

So I like Colts, was collecting them and shooting them way before I got into ARs. From SAAs, to 1911s and A1s to Agents and "dick" specials, to Gold cups, and ARs I've had a lot of them. I regret owning none of them. They all worked out of the box tho some of the labor needed lashing over the cosmetics on some of them.
 Not as impressed with some of the other brands shortcuts, especially with the 1911 design.

If you don't want to post on a public forum how about you email it or IM me with it. If they are in fact Colt bolts, of course I would be interested to see the circumstances under which they broke. Doesn't affect me? Because I now use Colt bolts in all my AR15 type firearms how could it not affect me in one way or another? That information could only be useful. Edit out any names or agencies if necessary, but if you are willing to post the pics then it is only right that you share the rest of the info, otherwise the images out of context and invalid. Without the context and background the images mean absolutely nothing, and I am very disappointed you would post them in that way as I do respect your opinion and credibility in most cases. |

I've noticed a wide variation in quality with AR parts; I've seen civvie AR parts get chewed up after a couple hundred rounds, where the same parts on issue weapons, even ones beat to hell in training units, never had that kind of wear.
I see a wide variation in finish, too. I've had uppers that scratch and ding easy, but my Colt upper, while the machining isn't all pretty, is hard as a rock. So, while I obviously stick to reputable manufacturers, I also don't mind paying just a little bit more (or the same price as new for something used) for a part that is a military take-off. That generally means Colt. Lots of good companies out there though, and getting better all the time. |

My experience with Colt has been very good. I bought a new Colt 1/7 16" barrel for my SP-1 from Specialized Armament and didn't know that the sling swivel wasn't already attached. Anyway, I contacted Colt about installing one for me and after confiming my serial number on the rifle, they told me where to ship it. After about 2 weeks, I got a letter in the mail that said there would be no charge for the parts or the labor and that very same day, the barrel arrived via UPS. It says a lot when a company will stand behind a rifle manufactured in 1975 and even more so when they will work for free on a part not even purchased through them.

My first AR was an SP1 that I turned into a HBAR A2 using all colt parts. About the only thing original is the lower receiver, fire control set and carrier group.
