I wonder if that means black hills will run out for them???????  Now that would be bad.  We'd all have to shoot Winchester brass or remington or pmc!!!!!!!

Riley's in Hookset, NH has had XM-193 by the case for over a year now- and
a 30 Gallon tub at the front door always filled to the top with 20 round boxes.

I just picked up a case dated 1/25/05, Lot 091.  $98.75 out the door.

I don't see much evidence of an ammo shortage,  as this one store at least has
had a constant stream of Lake City cases and an overflowing tub of 20 round
boxes for sometime now.

When you say case, do you mean 1000 rounds, or 500?

I mean a 500 round case of 20 round boxes   It's a reasonable price, the best I've seen is maybe 9 bucks less.

Yes, but how many 30 gallon tubs are in the back?

Do they sell online?

Ed_P,

Thanks for the heads-up at Riley's--picked up 500 rounds today. Lot 091. It's a couple hour drive, but worth it since we were down-state shopping anyhoo.  Saved shipping! I don't know if they do any mail order...I didn't think to ask.

Thanks again!

OK, maybe I missed it.  One thing for sure, I don't understand why 5.56mm ammo flys off the shelf.  I have noted that after the sunset of the AWB, AR parts are scarce: things are selling.  I bet that military needs are taking most of the U.S. production.

FWIW, I happened to be in an Academy store in Little Rock today, and they had several cases of Q3131A sitting there at $3.99 a box.

The current prices have finally forced me to do something I thought I'd never do.

I bought a case of Wolf .223.  <cough!>

A local shop had it for $115 per case of 1000 rounds.

With all of the "good stuff" at $4 and up per box of 20 with shipping, there was nothing I could do!

I feel cheap and dirty, but at least I have some blasting ammo for the next few weeks that will help me stretch my other stuff for 3-Gun matches.

This is the worst thing in the history of shooting (well, maybe not, but it sucks).

At least we don't have to make our own bullets out of .22 cases like they did in WWII.

I just bought 1000 rounds of Q3131A from ammoman.com.  It appears that I don't shoot as much as a lot of the guys on this site because that should last me about a year.   I think its a good price, but if i paid to much its not the end of the world.

Definitely seems like a time to acquire or convert weapons to calibers other than 5.56/.223.

Is the situation any better for .308 or 7.62x39mm?

Bob1984, are you thinking pistol rounded AR!!!  I would love one in 9 or 45 for that matter. hmmmmmmm....  with a can!!!!!  If I only had the money.

Hehe, I'm thinking AR in any caliber more available than 5.56.  I'd assume .308 would be plenty available because the military doesn't use very many .308/7.62mm weapons anymore aside from MG's and sniper rifles.  So, maybe AR-10 time if you can get one, or convert to pistol calibers and calibers like 7.62x39.  7.62x39 is always available, and the US doesn't use it, so it'll be around.

For those within driving distance of Gadsden, Al, The Sportsman's Exchange has XM193- had around 3000 rounds out, by the 20 round box @ 4.99. Didn't ask about case price, just made the sign of the cross with my two index fingers and was able to walk by
Anyway, I'm in handgun mode for awhile, that helped. I'm going down within the next week. I'll ask about the case- 500- price.

Knob Creek HAD 65,000 round of IMI 5.56mm stuff: sold out Friday by 11AM.  Another had Radway Green for $165/1000: I get it delivered from Aim for $167 on a credit card that gives me 1% cash back.  Another had LC M855, looked like the PD kind: very dull, almost, nasty looking for just under $200/1000.  Knob Creek was no bargain.  Also noticed that dealers had less stuff on tables.   This is the third Spring in a row where inventory and quality appeared to be down.

+1
I bought 1k rounds of LC "ss109" from one of the vendors for $160. I found upon inspection a few bent necks and one with no crimp. I've been through about 600 rounds and so far about 6 of them are unshootable.

They also had Federal XM193 for $165/1000 (Lot 095).  I got there early Friday and bought 1000 rnds. I went back to the tent in the early afternoon and someone was in the process of buying up all the remaining XM193 they had. You had to get there early.

Dealer at the Harrisburg show has XM193 for $96/500, but lowers the price for quantity. I got 2k rds from him in Feb, for $375ish...not too bad. He still has reasonable quantities; he says that he can still get it without too much trouble.  Makes me wonder where he gets it, since the online places mostly don't have it and sell out really quickly when they do.

He had lots 88 and 91, btw...

Iit is at gun shows and gun shops as a man wants ammo to gun with his new gun purchase but when all he is offered is Wolf they most of the time say no,As the dealer tells them they cant even get FAE-UMC-Winchester of any kind as it is bought up over the internet to fast and the Distributors are having a very hard time getting any,Not just XM-193 or Q3131 or any other military round i mean even just plain old $3.50 a box FAE - UMC or Winchester so yes they are not selling alot of ARs as most guys say hell with it just give me a cheap Romanian  AK and 1000 rnds of Wolf for that junker and we will just wait,

Hi,
Due to the shortage of the Q3131A that I so dearly love, I have been searching for a solution to my ammo needs.  I have been searching roung AR15.com threads, especially the ammo thread poll and found that very helpful.  I noted that people like the boxed Federal/LC XM193 and M855 ammo, but found the "PD" versions of this ammo to be of poor quality.

Here is an email that I wrote to Federal Cartridge COmpany yesterday:

I am considering purchasing some .223 ammunition that is labeled xm193pd and which states that it is Lake City ammo loaded by Federal Cartridge company.  This ammo is stated as being loose packed 500 to a box.  I have also seen ammo similarly listed as xm193 which is in 20 round cardboard boxes.  Please tell me the difference between these two types of ammunition.  Is one a reload or of lesser quality? The price of the xm193pd is much less, but I have heard nothing but bad reports as to the quality of the ammo.  The xm193 is more expensive, but it has been given much higher praise by users.  Thanks for all of your help regarding this matter.

Here is the reply I received today:

The ammo is the same. 20 rnd boxes or bulk packed 500 rnd boxes (slightly cheaper price) the ammo is manufactured by the Lake City Army Ammo plant in MO.

WOW!! ... How can this be if folks are having such good luck with one and no the other???  Does anyone know how to contact the Lake City Ammo plant?

I sure like to know the deal before I buy some!!

I bought 1K of XM855PD at knob creek on 4/9/05, paid $155 or $165. I'm just now getting around to sorting though it. I haven't made it to the range as much as I'd like. As for the ammo shortages if the ammo manufactures are making more or only XM855 shouldn't there be more XM855PD (it seems to be seconds)?
