They’re cheap. Until you replace everything on them.

ETA: If you do get one, I made the most thorough compatibility list I’ve seen anywhere in the link below. While most everything is AR15 there are some nuances but I provided easy solutions for them that are good upgrades anyway.

So I bought a laser thermometer and decided to do some testing. It’s currently 95* with little to no cloud cover. I grabbed the four unmounted rails I have handy.

1. Ruger factory black MLOK rail.

2. Geissele Mk4 black.

3. Geissele Mk8 DDC.

4. CMT DRT rail.

I let them sit in the sun for about 35 minutes. Temperature at placement was between 68 and 70 degrees. I set them on plastic flower pots to keep heat soak minimized. On to the results from lowest to highest.

114.6* - Geissele Mk8 DDC.
122.9* - Ruger MLOK.
125.3* - Geissele Mk4 black.
126.6* - CMT DRT.

I’m not surprised the DDC won out. I do a lot of shooting outdoors and FDE has always been considerably cooler than black. Pretty basic science here.

What did surprise me was CMT DRT. I wouldn’t think it would be hotter than the black rails, never the less the hottest.

What point does this test have? Well, use rail covers and gloves. As you shoot your rifle will cool down slower the hotter it is outside but I think we all knew that. The real benefit to this test is you can now go to your wife and say upgrading parts to tandodized isn’t a sick obsession, it’s actually for safety.

ETA: A few degrees warmer with a bit less wind today. All gained less than 5 degrees but color didn’t matter after an hour on aluminum. Won’t hijack the topic any further and posted todays testing HERE.

Science proving once again that Tano is superior to all other finishes.

ETA:

I just realized this page is devoid of Tano-Porn.
Making some changes to this build, soon the current x39 barrel will be an 8” 300blk

Welcome aboard. While there might not be any green in the anodizing dye, tanodize certainly requires a bit of green.

No new tano updates for me. Still haven’t got a Cloud REIN or new optic for the SFAR yet. Got the bright idea to buy a new carry gun, a bullpup rifle, and a few hundred dollars worth of Lancer 308 mags (which isn’t many).

I think about the only thing you can do is keep buying them in hopes for a dark shade…
Your rifle looks great though!!

Now for something not so pretty :)

I had a spare Kodiak upper and DDC lower laying around, so I threw them on my (beater/truck gun/daylight-hog rifle) after work today.
I was surprised how well the receivers matched, as I don’t think my other Kodiak parts are close to DDC at all.

If the barrel wasn’t pinned/welded I would be seriously considering it.
That and I already blew my Tano budget for the month on a Razor for my 308…

Nice score. I just looked around on CMT's website and see they've got an Arca Swiss rail system. Damn, that's sweet! Wish they had one in 9.5" I'd have to give it a try for giggles.

I've got a really nice tripod setup. Not that I'd use it much on a shorty, but still. Options..

At least 8 shades of tan anodize plus a couple of various-RAL HK parts for comparison.

Wilcox riser - FDE
Ripcord upper - Tan (???)
EXPS - FDE
Geissele ACH - DDC
Geissele M4 SMR - DDC
L3 NGAL - FDE
Modlite - FDE (brown body)

HK V4 Grip - RAL7008
HK Dust Covers - RAL7008 and RAL8000 (let’s be real, 8000 is yellow, not tan)

That's exactly what it is. Badger Ordnance M7 Scout Flashlight/Sling Mount. They can be ordered in black or FDE anodization. Obviously I opted for the FDE because it's +10 speed.

My attempt at a “50 shades of tano“ build.  The upper (Aero) and lower (Geissele) actually match more than I expected, and wanted, them to.  The buffer tube is also Aero and the charging handle is Geissele so the whole main, central part of the gun kinda matches, and then there’s the rail.  Oh well, I guess it’s all good.  Parts list as follows:

Upper receiver - Aero Kodiak brown
Buffer tube - Aero Kodiak brown
Lower receiver - Geissele DDC
Trigger guard - Geissele DDC
Charging handle - Geissele DDC
Rail - CMT DRT 15”
BCG - BCM Ion Bond
Angled foregrip - Railscales Anchor Terra Bronze
Grip - Ergo
Stock - Magpul SL-S
Mag - Magpul M3
Barrel - Ballistic Advantage 16” 5.56 Performance series
Muzzle device - Dead Air keymount
Trigger - Geissele SD-E
Rail covers - BCM
Battle Arms Development safety, pins and mag release

Now that I have my poverty pup all finished, really debating grabbing an OEM2 and having the barrel shortened for a P&W to make it a quasi URGI clone. All the Geissele goodies.

I’ve grown to not like black and tan. I’m skeptical on doing the normal Cerakote smoked bronze though. Has anyone ever had their receivers re-anodized aftermarket?

US Anodizing has a Magpul FDE anodizing that would run $450 total. Just can’t find an example of it.

ETA: Found a pic of their anodizing. Apparently the markings get muted and the guy doesn’t like doing it. Maybe I should just do a custom Cerakote mix. What do you guys think?

Technically not anodize but applies to everything you can’t get in tano. Someone just developed an FDE titanium nitride formula with the goal of matching up with tanodize. Bolt groups, barrels, pins, triggers, all of it. Soon you won’t have to have any black or paint on your rifle at all.

Another non-tano post, but I think it gets a pass since it’s on a tano gun…

I ordered one of Geissele’s new A17 grips to try out and just threw it on my tano 300.
I had to grind off the little duckbill to make it fit on this receiver, and the gap in the back strap is slightly annoying.

It feels good, and the checkering/texture makes it stick in your hand.

Waiting for them to let me know. I imagine it will slowly seep out into the aftermarket versus third party application. A lot of the parts would need to be finished in it from the get go versus third party application.

Gold titanium nitride is rare for AR barrels just because of the color, but there are multiple sources for bolts and barrels in that hue. The first company to get FDE nitride barrels and bolt groups out will make an absolute killing and it’s only a matter of time.

ETA: I just posted in PSA’s industry forum asking them to consider offering tanodize and FDE nitride. I’m genuinely amazed they don’t already offer tanodize as is.

Do you know what you just did? You didn’t even think of any consequences did you? Seeing this made me go look at Kodiak brown stuff. I found a buffer tube for $43. I bought it.

Also, the scope in the picture has zero torque applied to it, just had it mocked.

Current CMT rail.  13 inch.  Got a couple of those Matrix Arms receivers coming if UPS ever finds or responds.  Using a 13.7 barrel and want to pin a AAC 51 tooth which I read adds 1.875 to the barrel.  Anyone know if it's possible to shim/ spacer it to get to length?  Is there enough thread space?

This tano crap got the hook in me pretty good.  No thanks to this thread.

I don't think that the AAC 51T is going to get you to a legal 16 inch length with your 13.7 inch barrel. I had a 13.7 barrel pinned and welded by John Thomas of Retro Arms works a few years back and he made a custom spacer that was around 5/16 of an inch plus the appropriate shims to time the Surefire 3 Prong Warcomp in order to get to a legal length of 16 inches. A 13.9 inch barrel won't make the cut either based on the 1.875 inches that the 51T adds to the barrel. You can mock it up and measure, but just the math alone with a 13.9 and the 51T comes out to 15.775 inches.

Appreciate the response.  I'll get to the bottom of it and put it here once the rifle is built.  I'll pin something else on it's no big deal.
