This is actually an edifying thread to read!!  GREAT prompt O.P.

John 1:1-3  ESV  "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made"

John 3:3  ESV "Jesus answered him, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Though I don't study the translation, this one I just memorized as part of the Crown Financial class that I am studying:

1Chron 29:11-12  TLB  "Everything in the heavens and earth are Yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom.  We adore you as being in control of everything.  Riches and honor come from you alone, and you are ruler of all mankind.  Your hand controls power and might, and it is at your discretion that men are made great, and given strength."

And the most misquoted scripture award...

Ezekiel 25:17 = The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

Actual scripture = 25:17 And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them.

Heh, I just want to warn you that the "Todays English Version" Bible is the dryest translation Ive ever read.

I decided to read through it again (last time I read through it completely was in sunday school) and it just seemed a lot more obfuscated then I remembered. Reading the passages you guys pasted I checked against other versions online... It turns out the "Todays English" is just  not my cup o' Tea at all.

Anyhow my favourites.

Revelations 13:10 "Anyone destined for captivity goes into captivity. Anyone destined to be slain by the sword shall be slain by the sword. Such is the faithful endurance of the holy ones."

Job 19:29 "Flee then from the face of the sword, for the sword is the revenger of iniquities: and know ye that there is a judgment."

Then theres also the one in Leviticus about the lame of foot, crooked of back, etc not being allowed to approach the alter. Thats the one that makes me feel uncomfortable going to church... But you said favourite... not least favourite.

12 And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it-- In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace our wives, and our children-- and he fastened it upon the end of a pole.
13 And he fastened on his headplate, and his breastplate, and his shields, and girded on his armor about his loins; and he took the pole, which had on the end thereof his rent coat, (and he called it the title of liberty) and he bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed mightly unto his God for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren, so long as there should a band of Christians remain to possess the land---

My personal favorites:

Psalms 19:1 - "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork." Every time I see the power and majesty of nature, this verse courses through my mind.

It's the Scripture O' Truth thread!  Thank you, O-P.  Thank you very much for this thread of hope.  This is the most uplifting and encouraging discussion I've ever seen in my years at Arfcom.

bvmjethead's signature line (page 1) is my favorite scripture:

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Jeremiah 29:11

Even though I have a sense of purpose and direction in my life, this passage reminds me who's purpose it is.  Even though I don't know where my future will take me, my life is clearly an unfolding of His plan in His time.  It's awesome not to have the burden of planning and forcing my future; I let Him take care of it!  That leaves me with the sole struggle of being attentive and obedient.  Even when I fail that, He still takes care of me.

With that, I'll add Jesus' words:

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Matthew 11:28-30

There's one I like a bit BETTER, but I can't find it right now... :/ I know the "gist" but cannot recall the exact wording :/

But this is my second favorite, even if I do not (so much) care for the whole story....

Gen.27
[40] And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.

Why? Well, it's IN the bible, and the sword (much like a firearm, by today's standards) is still seen as a necessary thing to weild. (Presumably for self-defense, at least in part).

For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD, plans for peace, not for disaster! Plans to give you a future full of hope.
When you call me, when you go to pray to me, I will listen to you.
When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, you will find me with you, says the LORD, and I will change your lot; I will gather you together from all the nations and all the places to which I have banished you, says the LORD, and bring you back to the place from which I have exiled you.

Sounds like something from the Koran, as well.

Say, that 'band of Christians' remaining to possess the land didn't last very long, did it?

I thought that the 'Very gates of hell' would not prevail against His Church?

Well, it appears that the Very Gates of Hell did in fact prevail against whatever Church was established in the New World.

Damn shame.

I think that you have two different references in mind.  That is okay, just remember the Lord remembers them who remember him.

I have another favorite of mine:

15 And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?
16 And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.
17 And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

Zaphod,
The closest I could find is Amos 4:13--

For behold, He who forms mountains and creates the wind
And declares to man what are His thoughts,
He who makes dawn into darkness
And treads on the high places of the earth,
The LORD God of hosts is His name.

I don't think that was what you were looking for, though. There are searchable online Bibles (in more translations than you can shake a stick at) available at this website:

I can find nothing from Christianity, but there are several similar statements to those in the Koran and in the Holy Books of Hinduism.

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.    John 5:24

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.  Romans 5:1-2

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.  2 Corinthians 5:17

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
