I never said anything about being prepared for when SHTF.

I never have the time or money to even considering having as much ammo as you hott shots have.  Don't get me wrong though, if I had the money I would buy thousands or rounds, but I don't.

I get the impression that buying a gun(s) and having under a couple thousand rounds or ammo is un-heard of.  I agree with the theory, its better to have it and not need it, but I don't agree with the theory "if you don't have 1,000,000 rounds of every caliber ammo, then why do you even own a gun".

Boy, I certainly ruffled some feathers up with this one.

I learned I won't ask this question until I have about 20,000+  in ammo

I am sorry to be a noob but i dont know what NFA is...

that is awesome you get to take classes where you can shoot that much...i wish i had the time...where do you go to do this?

(Please understand I am sincere in my questions)

When I go shoot, on any given weekend I am lucky to go through 2-300 rounds...and I generally only get to shoot 1-2 weekends a month...

the other problem I run into are range nazis that only allow their ammo from their store to be fired....(anyone from VA with suggestions on where to shoot I live in Orange)...because of this i generally only keep my self defense ammo at home...

In hindsight I have shotguns too, so you should throw 12 gauge into that mix of .45 and .44

Its the classification for the type of specially regulated firearms that contain machineguns among others.  They hunger and call to you in the night.

hey man, dont feel bad...

I own 5 handguns and 2 shotguns...I am preparing to buy a new AR but I doubt I will have much more on hand than that for awhile...

and my ammo supply is similar to yours...

honestly if I tried to spend that much money on ammo I am 100% positive that my wife would promptly open up a can and use it to shoot me...

EDIT:  NFA i get it now...class 3...ok...I didnt even think of that, but I remember how much ammo I used to plow through on the SAW and M60...so I can see that certainly requiring a whole lot more....I didnt even think of that...Thanks!

Back when I was under 300 posts I wrote a soliloquy on the fact that I had exactly 90 rounds of 5.56 ammo in my entire inventory.  There was a Gun Show coming up soon where I was planning to restock.  But in the meanwhile I was undergoing withdrawal symptoms.  I wish I still had that post.  It was my first classic.

Don't be "turned off" by the replies of these guys. They're just messing with you.

The reason they react the way they do is because most of the people who post here about their ammo cache post so in order to show-off (with pride and in a good way) how much they have actually stocked up on. A lot of guys here are hard core shooters and can blow 1000 rounds or more per range session. Thus the need for that much ammo. Some on the other hand just want to have lots of ammo around ... for whatever reason or contingency.

So when you posted this question and mentioned how much you had, they just had to rib you for that.

No feathers were ruffled here. Just the normal "messing around" with a newbie.

Keep posting and  more power.

Hey man, always remember, a gun is useless without ammo. Think of it as a fancy club. You don't need 1,000,000 rounds, it would be nice to have, but I don't have the room for that many. I personally am shooting for 10,000 per rifle of stock piled (not for plinking) ammo. And 1,000 of plinking ammo. Buy more plinking ammo as it runs dry. That being said I just took delivery of a crate
of 1680 5.56 m855 (the good shit) from ammoman.

bringing my count to over 6,500 5.56 m855 mostly in bandolers and stripper clips.
2,000 308s British and Austrailian.

Clearly not enough, but its a start.
