This is true to some degree. As the 80's came on girls seem to take on a harder edge in their dress and personalities.

An early on screen appearance.

The guy on the right totally looks like Murderface.

But, yes, the 70s were mostly a monument to poor taste, non-existent fashion sense, and ugly "earth tone" colors that all looked

like something that could be found inside a toilet.

However, some modern styles are even worse.   It should be federal law that requires you to give a wedgie to anyone whose underwear

is intentionally visible while wearing pants.   Even if you have to hold them at gunpoint in order to administer the wedgie.

Do you remember how slippery a lot of those synthetic fabrics were?  Brake hard and you would slip off the seat.  They had a weird texture, something that just told your skin "it ain't natural, baby".  MBTex was the same way, but it was proudly unnatural, and worked well.  The stuff in American cards looked like artificial mutant mouse fur.  And cigarettes would burn holes right through in the blink of an eye.

ETA:

Weirdly reflective artificial mutant mouse fur.  I remember being in the back of a Pinto, going to Lake Arrowhead when there was still no one out there, and the fresnel lens sticker was making amazing patterns on the fabric.  By comparison, the look of leather on a a Jag at the time or the ubiquitous MBTex was really boring.

Jane is about my age and I was 18 in 1978, she was definitely a desirable girl back then and still today.  Just s few short years later the gal's started the landing strip look and they have a special spot in my heart

I'll take a late '70's girl that was thin and trim in her Jordash (sp?) jeans, over the fat slob muffin top type I see today There are very few girls that can wear the low rider pants of today and not look like they have a load of shit in their panties.  Just me

Teen age girls did not have fat on them in the 70's. They would blow you away in a bikini. Flat stomachs. I went to the pool a few years ago with my teen age daughter. I couldn't believe how many girls 16-18 year old girls had guts on them. They shouldn't have been in bikinis but they were.

If you want to get an idea what it was like in the 70's watch the movie Phantasm. I had a 70 Cuda 440. They have a black one in the movie. This movie reminds me of my life in the 70's except the super natural stuff.
I used to drive on the back roads pretty regular at 13 years old. Drove my buddies 70 Chevelle to the next big city at 15. We lived in the country. Not a lot of other kids around. Every day we were shooting, fishing, dirt bikes, snow mobiling . No cops or game comission giving you a hard time.
You had to be there. Talk about fun. try launching a 500 hp muscle car on bias ply tires listening to a Zeplin song for the first time. The girls were prettier then. It was a natural beauty type of thing. Listen to the song Chevy Van. It always brings back memories of the natural beautiful girls of the 70's. Bare foot dark natural tan cut offs and a tube top. The 80's and early 90's were pretty bad too!!!!

I wish we could all just stay in the 50's. When America was still #1, people seemed to have common sense, prices for items were low, and the USA still made world class vehicles.
