74 was a good year. http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb435/DamascusKnifemaker/Cars/IMG_2632c.jpg No it was not. By then the muscle care had been castrated by unleaded gas, catalytic converters, the insurance industry. etc, etc. 71 was the last year of real muscle cars. By 74 they were just shadows of their former selves. By 75 they were all gone. The 1975 Corvette had either 165 or 205 hp. The GM 305 v8 in 1979 put out 130 hp or 125 hp in California emission cars. The 79 Ford Mustang II put out 89 hp. The 77 ford 305 put out 134 hp. The 2013 Ford 302 put out 444 hp. |

The muscle car arguments are for another thread. Thats a 73 Gremlin soi it wouldn't have had a 390 as AMC had ceased making it. The AMC 304 was the largest engine available from the factory. The Randall 401-XR Gremlin was a 401 car but it was not an official AMC offering. A 401 was dropped in at Randall AMC of Mesa Arizona and could be purchased by the general public. |

My wife had the Levi Gremlin. It was a nice, powerful car that would run rings around alot of outfits that were built in that time frame.
Was Jane a slim blonde? |

Most of the time I have gotten along with her. I think she gets a bad rap, and she's put up with a lot of call outs and things that most wouldn't. We did have an argument once, but I was a bit of an ass to her. I do like her witty remarks, and she got me with a couple of good zingers in that one. I have been best friends with the same person for 40 years, and we've gone to fists and feet a few times, so an argument doesn't mean anything. I do wish she'd post the photo. It would help make for a Merrier Christmas. I just don't want to miss it this time. |

I was watching Taxi Driver tonight. The people are all dressed like clowns. White people with afros. Then I remembered Norcal's thread about home decor of the 70's. I know every decade has its weird fashions but there's something especially ugly about the 70's. The 70's is one decade I would NOT want to relive. Everything about it was weird. I can proudly say I escaped the 70's without ever owning a leisure suit. Only fun thing about it was muscle cars were more plentiful, gas was cheaper and the legal drinking age was 18. |
|
Like every other decade, it's defined by it's excess. There was a picture posted earlier of kids in the 90's (MY decade!), in their bright colored clothing. While I do actually remember seeing that on occasion, it was FAR from the norm.
I suspect the same is true of the 70's. For the most part, everybody has been posting what corporate America wanted it's country to look like, in the 70's. It doesn't mean that people actually dressed that way, as a matter of course. |

"Truth. I had a rifle and a shotgun in the gun rack from the day I could drive up to when I went to college. Fights were with fists. We did not have helmets or knee pads for every little outdoor activity. Everybody did not have tattoos or piercings to have an identity. The music and cars were awesome especially from the earlier part of the decade. We wore belts and hats with the bill facing forward. The colors of appliances and bathrooms leave little to be desired now but we never knew the difference then. Fireworks were real and love was really free."
I was born in 1959 and I agree with the above, that was my experience anyway. |

The 70s were really when margin compression from the oil shock and inflation made America's smartest managers decide to use tooling until it was barely able to cut. The 165 horsepower engine might have 165 horsepower, or it might have 130 horsepower. Engine builders could routinely get 10-15% over stock by just putting the engines together properly. I remember well how badly most of them ran, and how well they would run if someone took them apart, checked them out, fixed the problems, and put them back together again with the same carb and emissions. Those small Honda engines were not just surprising because of the economy but also because they varied so little from one to the next. That really wasn't the case with GM and Ford by the end of the 1970s. It's too bad, because a lot of the designs weren't bad at all, and if built properly would have been amazing. I was far from the only one who looked at the Quad 4 when it came out and said "why the hell was this not out in 1978?" |
