I found this skull along the beach in Gulf Breeze, FL. I have no idea what is. I checked www.skullsunlimited.com and compared it to specimens they have online and I can't find a match. It isn't a turtle that I am aware of, not a manatee, not a dolphin. It could be a fish, but it is rather large and the bone is pretty dense. The skull is about 9" long. This is all I found, no tissue, fur, scales, or other bones. It doesn't appear to have teath, but it has a plate on the maxilla. I am thinking vegetarian. I am going to take it to my marine biology teacher tomorrow. Anybody here have a clue?

It originated from Haiti.
That's all I'm authorized to say at this time. cynic p.s. Bathe with bleach solution and burn your clothes. Do it now. |

holy hell.. :P |

My guess would be that it belongs to a sea turtle of some sort, with most of its parietal bone missing which gives it the illusion of having a huge-ass sagittal crest.

Don't think it is a sea turtle, or an eel, or an albatros. I am leaning more toward a fish now. Maybe a catfish or carp of some kind. My Marine biology teacher is looking into it. She is a bit puzzled too.

2 Things.
First, if this is a photoshopped skull I am going to f-n pissed!! Second, I want you to know that you have likely cost several companies both private and federal, thousands of dollars in time due to the research everyone is doing. 403 reads at last look. I alone have put about $50 of time into research only to come up with nothing. God knows there are more people out there doing the same. no guess as I have proved all of my thoughts wrong! CH |

Definitely NOT photoshoped. It's the real deal. I just don't know what the real deal is. I emailed a couple "experts" on skulls. Just waiting for replies now.

BTW, I figured it was not a photshopped job, but still had to cover the bases[;)] CH |

I think this is a pelvis, not a skull. From a sea lion or seal.
|
|
No seals or sea lions in Florida. It is definitely a skull. It has a cranial cavity, nasal passage, foramen magnum, and mastoid processes.

|
I think you're right, that's gotta be some sort of bird skull.
I'm going to load up some extra mags though just in case..... |
|
Maybe bird, but I am hard pressed to remember a bird that has that type of ridge on the top of its head. Its pretty definate.

Looks alien to me.
Maybe it's from a not-quite-so extinct dinosaur. Hmm... tagged anyway. |

Something like this, without the beak and the lower half?

fish head,,
pick one,, but 98% thats what it is,, with the plate it could be a few things but its a fish... could be from a large ole redfish,,black drum,,catfish ,,list could go on and on,,, its no way a bird tho, but with the way the skull is shaped it has to be a semi streamlined fish..look at a cat fish skull and you will see what i mean....... protus |

Yes, I believe it's the skull of a large sea bird? with beak missing, maybe a storks skull?

I'm a fisheries biologist and working on my Ph.D. in Ichthyology, and I don't have a clue what it is. I'm also in Florida (Ft. Lauderdale area), and I really can’t think of a local critter that it might be. The structure looks fishlike, and the bone structure looks too heavy to be a bird (at least I can't think of a local bird offhand with a skull that heavy). I really have no idea. My best guess would be maybe a gulf sturgeon, or some deepwater species. It really has a very pronounced cranial crest, and very large orbitals indicating either large eyes or a heavy muscle structure around them.
I'll tag this one for later just to see what the outcome is... SNF |
|
On a serious note, the skull is very bird-like but I'm not seeing any with the strange multiple crests on the top like that.
|
|
Well, the "skull" bone structure looks cartilaginous to me. That says to me that it's most likely from a skate or a ray.
|
|
Jesus, I don't know what is more scary, the picture of that thing or the fact there is a website called "Skullsunlimited"
