Yeah, 6th grade science experiment. Tested the penetration of various .22 projectiles on phone books. Dad was cool with it.

A friend's house had a large basement that had been converted into a rec room. We'd place stacks of old magazines in the fireplace and load our rifles with .22 shorts.
Had another friend who assassinated his dorm room chest of drawers and a stack of Gold Cup socks with a .25 autoloader. Luckily the chest of drawers was against an outside wall. He patched up the drawer, spackled the wall, and never heard any more about it. |

Sadly. yes. Had a ND once breaking down an XD, many years ago. I *thought* I had cleared it.
Had it pointed down at the floor when I pulled the trigger. Never, ever break the "muzzle in a safe direction" rule.  Scared the shit out of me, but damn it was a learning moment, and thankfully no lasting damage. |

No, but I was in an adjoining room when my dad had a ND many years ago. He was selling a Winchester 1897 to a coworker at our dining room table and blew the light fixture out of the ceiling while I was getting something out of the kitchen. My mom was in the room adjoining from another side. It was a helluva noise and broken glass and plaster were everywhere.

Yes. .357 Mag, 158 gr. JHP in a basement bedroom with faux paneling drywall. It was an ND. Through the wallboard, into an upright freezer. Entered the side panel from the rear and traveled along the sidewall and stopped in the front door frame. It was 44 years ago. I couldn't hear right for days. The freezer was none the worse for wear. Me....I learned a a valuable lesson, thank God not at the expense of anyone else. If you don't believe in a higher being, that will give you pause to reconsider.

Once, negligent. A 7mm Mauser, my first real gun. I was playing around with it after I had rebuilt it from a rotted, rusted mess. I forgot that I had loaded it and fired it into the floor of a bedroom.
No one else was around at the time and somehow it didn't leave a visible hole in the floor or carpet. My ears rang a bit and I decided that it would be a very bad idea to do that again. |

Nope.
I was in the next room when my dad did, though. He was a LEO, and was doing something with an AR15 in the bedroom. I heard a very loud BANG, followed by my mother screaming at the top of her lungs. He had shot a hole that went through the wall into the adjoining kitchen cupboard, blowing some dishes to bits. I was in said kitchen when that happened. I was maybe 15. He claimed that "it just went off". |

Some times, because if you own a gun over a year without negligent discharging at least once, you aren't handling it enough. NDs are a natural part of handling weapons, just like tweaking your back is part of weightlifting and car accidents are part of driving. I ND several times a year because I actually HANDLE and know how to USE my weapons. It makes me a better firearms handler and marksman, and it's a small part of the price you pay in the sheepdog lifestyle Simple fact is, the "safety mentality" will build mental blocks in your head that will get you killed. You need to be comfortable putting your finger on the trigger and pointing the gun wherever you want no matter the time, place, or status of the weapon. Taking time to check whether the gun is loaded whenever you pick one up will serve to make you hesitate in a personal defense scenario. You fucking safety idiots are going to get people killed all because of this fucking "ND" shaming. Guns are inherently dangerous, you need to accept it.

I voted 'yes, in anger' because I was pretty pissed at the mice in the attached garage, both times I shot the mice (even used a "mouse gun" to shoot one of them), and because I was annoyed at the squirrels when I shot out the window at the squirrels that were tearing up the eaves of my last house.
Poll needs a 'yes, because it was convenient' option, since I have a target stand that I can hit from the window behind me. |
