I remember the advertisements for the Fairlane Village Mall, "opening soon".  For years there were signs telling of Just When it was going to open.
I don't know how many years it was delayed.  But it was delayed for a Very Good Reason: Coal was discovered on the site.  By the time it opened the family had moved to New Jerk State and Da Bronx.

Hey, do you remember the coal breaker on the South Side of Frackville?  I sure do.

Interesting to hear the talk about Frackville.  I was raised there and graduated from North Schuylkill Jr. Sr. High School in 1982.  My Dad was born & raised in Frackville.

Went to college in OK and now live in AK.

It was interesting to visit in 2006 & 2009 when Mom got sick and passed on.

Thanks for all the memories!

No, I don't recall that store.  I left in 1984 to go to college.

I do remember Giorgio's pizza parlor.  All the bars in residential neighborhoods.  Taking out the ashes for the garbage man.  3 gas stations on the 4 corners of Lehigh Ave. & Oak Street.

Scharadin's Pharmacy, J. Fox Furniture, Harry Lehrman's, the old 5 & 10 cent store, A&P before it turned into Rite Aid.

Dang!  I'm feeling old!

I remember The Picnic Grounds, the bridge over the railroads tracks in town, Railroad Tracks IN town, period, the flagpole in the middle of the street, Alexanders, The movie theater where I first saw The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

ETA: New Link
And the annual Fireman's Carnival.  Turn up your sound:

Funny that you sent the FireFighter's Parade video.  I was a volunteer firefighter with Good Will Hose Co. #1 and an EMT with the Frackville Community Ambulance Association.

The bridge over the railroad tracks was 200' from my house - we lived on Middle Street and the Reading Railroad was directly in front of my house.  I crossed the brigde many times walking to Franklin Elementary School.  I think hurricane Agnes put an end to that railroad in '76?

The movie theatre is a vague memory.  Dang.  I used to play under the Oak Street bridge.  Climbed all around those "forts" under it.  Threw rocks at cans.  Stupid kid stuff.

Hurricane Agnes did it in 1972.    I have a snapshot of a section of the railway washed completely out.  I'm talking about ten feet of railway twisted like a pretzel, the hole in the embankment was about six feet deep.
I spent that summer with my Aunts.  They served mobilized National Guardsmen taking breaks.  Oh, but they made out from the NG's.

I often wonder about Gilberton and the valley between Frackville and Shenandoah.  We got nearly two feet of rain from that hurricane.  Much of it HAD to drain down and into the valley from the hills.  Where did all that water go?

Just before I went back I well remember a story coming from TV Stations in Philly.  We had double digit inches of water fall on us, but the reservoirs over there were less than half full!  That was fun to listen to.

I went to the Field & Stream store that recently opened in the Capital City Mall today.

They have a small selection of Black Rifles in stock.  I figure about half a dozen.

The late BP season (after Xmas, through January) is flintlock only. Inlines and percussion guns are allowed in the early muzzleloader season.

This guy got in HUGE trouble.

I work for Air Products in Hometown and he was flying his drone around over the plant. The FBI were contacted and everything because he flew it over a Tier 1 Chemical Facility.

I work security, a coworker was the one who stopped him and contacted the police.

The Litchfield elementary was upgraded a few years back and still there. Awesome school, awesome location. Unfortunately local asshole politicians cried and whined about "trucking" kids up there and around that's area.....so they spend a shitload of $$$$ on Athens school (you know, the usual big ass stadium, new track and zero $$$ spent on science/music), passed the bill onto the tax payers (school taxes nearly doubled since 2009) and SHUT DOWN Litchfield elementary.

so now all kids must got o Sayre or Athens schools. fucked up. My 4 are home schooled.

Last I saw there was still active mining going on along Burma road.  I think everything behind Wal-mart and Homo Depot has been reclaimed.  Back off one of the trails (damn near to New Philly) there's a huge ancient drag line that was still operating as of 10 years ago.  Fucker squeaked and carried on something fierce.  It's deep down in a pit.

We used to get on the trails at Burma road and explore all day.  Found some very cool shit up there.  Almost fell down an airshaft too  One of the neat things we found AND actually took pictures of was an old shooting range surrounded by empty howitzer cases.

Random pics from St. Claire

This old quarry is gorgeous.  Water is brilliant blue.  First time finding it, someone somehow got a fucking minivan back there
