A St. Louis judge on Monday awarded nearly $23.5 million to a former police officer who was beaten by colleagues while working undercover during a protest.

Luther Hall was badly injured in the 2017 attack during one of several protests that followed the acquittal of Jason Stockley, a former St. Louis officer, on a murder charge that stemmed from the shooting death of a Black man.

Hall previously settled a separate lawsuit with the city for $5 million. In 2022, he sued three former colleagues   Randy Hays, Dustin Boone and Christopher Myers   for their roles in the attack.

Hall, in court on Monday, talked about the severe physical and emotional damages that followed the beating. He suffered several herniated discs and a jaw injury that left him unable to eat. He developed gallstones with complications, requiring surgeries.

"Mr. Hall had to endure this severe beating and while that was happening, he knew it was being administered by his colleagues who were sworn to serve and protect," Circuit Judge Joseph Whyte said.

Seems like this should have been a simple workman's comp claim.

And how are these former coworkers going to pay that much when they are in prison for an unreasonable assault?

ETA:  I just looked and the first guy is probably about done with his sentance.

The second guy has to be out because he got about half the time that even the defense asked for in sentancing.  One year and a day.

And the third guy got one year of probation.

LoL.   I’d love to hear the whole story..   Do the Taxpayers have to pay, or only the perpetrators?

In addition to the settlement with Hall, the city of St. Louis last year paid nearly $5.2 million over allegations that police violated the rights of dozens of people by capturing them in a police “kettle” and arresting them. Some said they were beaten, pepper-sprayed and attacked with stun guns in various downtown protests after the Stockley verdict.

Well, I know the taxpayers are on the hook for 5 mil to Hall and 5 mil to others caught in the Kettle and beaten.     But I meant the other 23 million.   It sounds like it’s a private judgement against the disgraced cops?

It is a pot. Often used for heating up liquids.

Kettling is corralling. You use actual bodies to contain people or animals. You surround and then arrest. You leave no way for them to escape. This is good for mass arrests BUT it can be very problematic.

A kettle or cauldron is an old military term for the envelopment and capture of an army, I suppose the cops surrounded a group and did a mass arrest.

Sounds like an occupational hazard. He was in the crowd to turn the cops to do the same thing to someone else. If it would’ve happened to someone else he would’ve been screaming it was justified.

Personally I hope they screamed stop resisting the whole time…

We have never trained using it outside an arrest for a very small group.

None of the fed training I have done has ever included it.

Workman's comp? LOL. They beat the guy. I hope your trolling. The cops and the city need to pay big. If they can't or don't pay, it should come out of the police pension fund.

When we did train up for 2012 DNC we were told not to do it by the feds.   In 2015 the agency wrote policy about not doing it

It's honestly a bit odd to be honest.  If he was beat by the crowd that's how it would have happened.

Arf loves that shit.

There was a thread here about a guy who's employer threw him a a bday party against his will.

Most arfcommers thought $500k was an acceptable payout for such atrocities.
