It’s not me. I have a modest car collection of motorcycles and performance/tuner/exotic cars and 2 rather normal daily drivers.

But I am a car guy to my core. (And have been since I was a fetus) and there are a few really odd cars that I would like to have in my stable. (Like a Pinzgauer or a DeTamaso Longchamp, among others that don’t really invoke “hyper rare showoff car” )

I was the celebrity guest at a convention center car show recently (in a midsized metro) and I found myself enjoying the weird cars more than the “tuner lambo” stuff. (Which I damned well also like).

Crazy shit like a restomod 6.9 Mercedes. It was just so different and awesome.

Anyways, if  you filter out the noise from the signal, arfcom is one of the most awesome places on the net for “that is dialed in”  answers….

So, who here has some really weird shit in the transportation department?

How the hell did you know. If only I still had it.

This thread reminds me of an arrogant kid in middle school bragging about "you couldn't get my dad's Porsche out of first gear."  I told him "you couldn't get my mom's Pacer out of first gear." Regrettably, that car is long gone.  RIP "The Egg"

Is that just a “You don’t know how to drive” thing, or is there some quirk to Porsche and Pacer transmissions  that makes them different to shift?

They count as awesome. I always liked the RX-8.

My own car is uncommon for a currently-produced car, but certainly nothing especially unusual.

I had a friend in high school who had a AMC Matador that was a former fbi undercover police vehicle .
I only have currently a JDM all wheel drive first gen Honda Odyssey van. I have a 200 series land cruiser which they only sold 1200 of my year.. I have a 2 wd Dodge Ram charger waiting on some attention from me. Other than that all normal stuff.

In to see automotive weirdness. I in no way qualify, my garage contains a 2nd gen Xterra and a 4th gen Impreza. I used to have a NC Miata and a NB Miata before that.

Had a '74 Saab 99 for years, key to open the door, screwdriver to start it. It was missing from the family house one day, presumably my brother "traded" it, like a few other cars through the years

Used to see a De Tomaso Pantera on a trailer in the Bitterroot from time to time, never saw it driving.

I have a 1975 olds convertible I bought off the showroom floor as new in 2002. Was my daily in HS and college and still have it in the garage, need to get it back to it's glory days.

I also had a fully rhinolined FJ cruiser seen here
did it all myself when this kind of thing was pretty rare. Super cool but not ideal with young kids and carseats

My father used to own an HMV Freeway. He gave it to a friend as a wedding present. I've considered picking one up for sentimental reasons, and for shitting around.

What was it like to get these here?
Are they road legal?
What's it like to drive around town?

I've thought about trying to get one, but am unsure if I'd even like it.
They sure look like they'd be fun to bomb around in.

Maybe not exactly rare and not weird - but I'd bet I'm the only one on ARFCOM driving a Nissan Stagea.

Natural born gear head - undergrad had to be mechanical engineering or nothing.

One of our instructors is into Crofton Bugs. Obscure little things, one of the first cars built entirely in California or something. I've certainly never seen one, he buys anything he can find, more of them in the LA area than anywhere else.

The gauge is probably the only famous thing about them.

More in the "unusual" category.
Hillman Husky, a British economy vehicle.

😊

Both sisters learned to drive with it, my brother drove it till he ran it out of oil. Sounded like Thor's hammer banging on the engine block.

Now: there's a hint that this vehicle is not truly British. It's due to a characteristic of all British cars which is not evident in this picture.

A dealer out here has a '61 Morris Minor 1000 on the lot, those old english cars certainly have their own styling.

I prefer yours, the Morris looks like a Beetle with a body kit

I learned to drive in a '62 Corvair (not the Spyder ) that I bought for $50.  No starter and wasn't street legal, so friends and I would push start it and jump terraces in a Texas pasture.

This ain't it, but it's its twin:

Only weird or unusual if it doesn't need coils or a starter or a rebuild due to low compression

I'd argue that my SA is weirder and more unusual but it still is nowhere near the level of weird or unusual that ARFCOM is capable of.

87 Toronado, like the one in the pictures.
The unusual bit:  digital dash (this is before the OBDI connector) has a built-in diagnostic display that shows error codes.

Whatever you drive, April 22 is earth day.
Show your connection with the earth by driving your loudest, least fuel mpg, highest emmission gas/diesel vehicle.
I will do my part with my 67 Skylark.  Loud flowmaster mufflers, 340/4bbl, low mpg, emmision control is oil vapor breather cap.

Very cool.

Getting parts for something like that must be insanely difficult!

We got rid of it many years ago.
eta My dad got it used in 1961. He said that the tires would rot before they'd go bald. And it sipped gasoline petrol.

The interior was much like Ron Weasley's family car.
