A close family member started out in the Marines as a private. He was just promoted to Warrant officer 3 and within just a few days promoted again to Captain. Is that normal? How big of a deal is this for him? I’m damn proud of him for all he has accomplished in his life but he never talks about what he does.

I think that's how they do it for a Limited Duty Officer, promotion first to CWO-3 then immediately to O-3.

Yep.

I served with 2 that were promoted that way.

You've got to be CWO2 to apply for LDO.

He was already selected for promotion to CWO-3, and got selected for LDO Captain.  The promotion times just so happened to line up for him to get promoted in quick succession.

I don't recall the specifics of why, but seem to recall there's some statutory reason behind it.

OK, that makes more sense. Just coincidence in timing.

OK, that makes more sense. Just coincidence in timing.

They are  two different boards, the CWO board automatically pulls everyone in zone into the selection process but the LDO board they have to apply for, and if they get selected for LDO chances are they would also got selected for CWO3.

Technical specialists needed for billets requiring commissioned officer. They are not supposed to command, but for some MOSs like EOD they occasionally do.

For the USMC, you see most of the LDOs at HQMC in billets involving policy advocacy or requirement’s development
