...would you buy it?
2000 model year Crown Vic Police Interceptor, 90,000 miles. Former small town cop car. Know the police chief a little, can get it for $2000. What do you think for a college kid that needs a car? |
only if it's black with tinted windows all around and a slicktop light package
Ask to see the maintenance records. |

Probably wouldn't be the best on gas vs a used Civic/etc, but they are built like tanks and parts & labor is cheap since they've been around for decades. For the milage 2k is a bargain, though I'd get the brakes checked before plunking it down.
I bought one a little while back when I wrecked my truck and needed a vehicle ASAP. I paid $2700 cash. '00 model. 75000 miles. For that kind of money, you can't go wrong. You'll probably have to buy brakes and tires right away (like that day).
visit crownvic.net Plenty of knowledge can be found there. edited to add: definitely find out if the intake manifold has been replaced. With the miles, it probably has, but best to check. |
Two questions:
1. Who does their maint? 2. Are they take homes? ETA: If you don't mind that piss/barf smell that never comes out and the food stains and ripped up seats. They can be a decent deal |
I second the idea of checking on its maintenance records.
If it's at 90k miles but saw recent and thorough servicing, go for it. if it last saw a decent servicing at about 70k....well, inspect thoroughly and carefully. Actually, do that either way, but possibly more so depending on how recent the last maintenance was. Could be a good buy, though, and that's a pretty good price. |
Those are big engines! Plan on visiting a lot of gas stations.
If I could find a decent deal on one around here I'd pick it up.
A friend has one, they are fun cars... People get out of your way too.
Check the maint records and like someone said, have the brakes checked. |
I wouldn't call a 4.6L big... |
Sometimes they move over... sometimes they just slow down in front of you. |
Does it have a one-piece plastic back seat, or the stock one?

4.6L come on and as mentioned maintnence records would be nice along with replacing the piss poor Intake Plenum Good ride for the money though IMO |

I actually haven't seen it myself, my dad has looked at it though. He said the front seats were cloth and the back seat was vinyl. I don't think it has a hard plastic back seat with the cut outs for cuffed hands...that would be kind of cool though. It'll come with the cage and brush guard though. Mileage isn't going to be great, but it's a $2000 car with only 90K on it... We know the chief a little, and he decides if it goes to auction or not. He said he'd sell it to us without auction if we wanted it. That's how we'd get a decent deal on it. I'll look into the maintenance before buying. If all it needs is new brakes, that shouldn't be a problem. Replacing brakes isn't hard. There is a 2-post Rotary lift in my dad's shop... I'm just kicking myself for not picking up one of their old Ruger P-89s when they switched over to Glocks. I could have gotten one for a little over $200. |
yep,,vinyl seats, handcuff secures, cage,,,great for date night with the local sorority chippies, |
Which bring to mind... The back seat!
I can imagine thing might have gotten ugly in there at times; puke, piss, and other bodily fluids... Just make sure you get it detailed. |
If it was my Chiefs CV, I would buy it.
Check the records, etc., take home vs pool car (I would never, ever buy a pool car). |
What he said. i really like CV's. I've owned a 92, 98 and 2001. However, I would NEVER touch a police fleet vehicle with 90K. The things are hammered to death by that mileage. The engines are just fine, it's everything ELSE that turns to junk. Our cars are pulled at 90K because of it. |
It's definitely closer to one end of the scale than the other, and guess which end that is? |

If it's well maintained it's a good deal. some departments have good Preventive Maintenance for their vehicles and some treat them like shit.
Find out why they are getting rid of it. Just cuz it's old and not a current model is a good thing for you. Because it's been a maintenance hog and it is now cheaper to buy then fix well theres a good data point. 7 years old, 90k miles, works out to about 1100 miles a month, 50 miles a work day. |
CV's make great beaters/daily drivers.
They are worth so little and alot of the parts from the older ones interchange. They aint super fast but rear drive, full frame and a V8 is hard to argue with in the day of front drive econobox trash. Go for it!! |
The department is getting a Dodge Charger as a new patrol vehicle, so they need to get rid of one car. It's from a town of 1,085 people. They have a chief and a few officers. Not too much goes down there though, so while I'm sure some bad things have been in the back seat, I don't think it was a daily occurance to have a Hep B tranny cuffed and hogged tied wallowing around spreading bodily fluids in the back seat after being picked up for prostitution. Not that kind of town... |
It doesn't sound like it would have seen hard use. Its probably been serviced at Ed's Garage (or your local equivalent). Talk the guy that has been servicing it.
Sounds like a deal to me. |
Buy it before a taxi company does.
Easily good for another 100K miles with only minor maintenance. |

Find out if they have anything newer. 2000's are ok, but they had flaky engine programming that year (I'd rather have a 99 then a 2000). Some of them were reprogrammed by the dealer and should have an obvious sticker that says so. Newer cars will have Product Improved cylinder heads. Also, see if it has 3.55 or 3.27 rear gears. The 3.55s might have a limited slip differential, but the 3.27s will get better mpg. (All 99's and about half the 2000 CVPIs had 3.55s) Look and see if you have a rusty driveshaft, if not it's an Aluminum metal matrix shaft, they are a little shorter then the steel ones and have different tailshaft housings (but it's a good thing).
I bought a '99 that now has 115k that's been ridden hard, I pretty much replaced the entire drive train, exhaust, fuel system and air intake for racing. 2000 Mustang PI motor + nitrous kit, ran 12s in the 1/4. |

Bitch PLEASE! Yo shit is weak dawg. If yous gonna roll tall, YA'LL GOTS TA ROLL TALL. Check how da bitches be feeling ma FLAVA!... HOLLAH! |
Get a 01' or newer, 00' still have the NPI engines (think 96-98 mustang GT), 01' and up is about 45 hp more for the same price.

I just picked up a 05 CVPI (white) with 14900 miles. I have had it for a month and it has the hide away lighting package. I added a 1 dual talon in the front and 2 in the back. It makes a good extrajob car. I like mine and I am sure if you buy one you'll like yours too.
It might not be good for gas mileage. Average 10 mpg patrolling, 14 is the best I've had. Anyone else concur on the gas mileage? |
My 2000 gets around 18-20, 1992 gets slightly better. I drive somewhat spirited as well because the exhaust still gives me a semi. |
The one I just rented (friggin' loaded) got an average of 25mpg on my way home from Chicago, according to the nifty computer thing.
imo, it's worth a gamble at 2k. i may pick one up myself if i can find a decent deal on one.
