I was strongly tempted by an 8 3/8" Model 17-3 this past Friday. I could have had it for $1,225 OTD, which is a pretty good deal, but I chose to walk away since I've got a number of long weekend getaways planned for this summer and need to be a little fiscally conservative. Of course that didn't stop me from spending $800, OTD, for a 4" square butt Model 13-3 with original box about an hour later.
This S&W wheel gun addiction is tough. |

I may go back later this week and if it's still there, I may put it on layaway, which will give me 90 days to pay it off. |

If you are going to pack it around, the j-frame wins, but will be bitchier if you try speed loaders because the cylinder is very close to the frame. The 3-in barrel is perfect and its what I had in a .357 60-15. Not sure I'd care about the double action trigger pull, I would never use it anyway. I shoot .22 Lr revolvers single action exclusively.
I like the older ones better also, but the new ones should shoot just fine and aren't going to be such a pain to find and buy. I might eventually grab one too, don't feel like packing my heirloom Diamondback around. |

In for the info considering the same, either a Smith 617 or a Ruger GP in 22.

If you want it for training a full size 357 etc or target. The 617 is without a doubt the one to get.
If you want a 22 revolver get a 63. |

The 617 seems to be available locally which means I could atleast have a chance to be picky where as the 63 it seems I would have to order in. Part of me thinks the 617 is the better buy but I cant deny a short smaller .22 being really handy. The 617 as it sits is a few more ounces HEAVIER than my 357 guns and 2 ounces from my 44 magnum. That is somewhat hard for me to swallow. 617= 40 Oz gun 63= 25 oz If they made the 617 with a tapered barrel its exactly what I would want but alas they do not What says the hive? 617 https://external-preview.redd.it/OZ42TUu_Uz3D177e-Uca1y1UJ9wJhEI06B6xITPO6wo.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=8d0aafab661266475d23bd12dc75d12d4a2f5fe8 63 https://i.ytimg.com/vi/xFChl_2u3S4/sddefault.jpg View Quote After one brick from a double action .22 |

617 is my favorite gun out of almost 300 I have owned. I have had it for 18 years and it is simply the most consistent shooting gun I have owned in ANY caliber, and amazingly with ANYy ammo, even the cheap stuff too weak to cycle a semi-auto.
It comes already drilled and tapped adding an optic, and I think the overall weight (mine includes an older Aimpoint) helps me steady it for shooting it better. Attached File |
