"NASA Administrator Bill Nelson is being mocked for suggesting the far side of the moon is always "dark" and can't explain why China is interested in exploring that part of the moon. "What do you think the Chinese are trying to get at, at the back side of the moon?" Rep. David Trone (D-MD) asked Nelson at a congressional hearing last week. "They are going to have a lander on the far side of the moon, which is the side which is always in dark. Uh, we're not planning to go there," he said." https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/space/2978857/nasa-administrator-no-idea-why-china-going-far-side-moon-always-dark/ |

Larry Niven tells a story about being on a panel with the (then) NASA administrator regarding the space program. The audience was mainly journalists, and one asked the administrator when we were going to put a base on the Moon. The administrator looked puzzled and said "Why would anyone want to live on the Moon?"
Niven said "Let's see a show of hands - who here would go live on the Moon?" 9 out of 10 hands shot up. One man said "I'd have to ask my wife;" the man next to him looked at the first and said "I'd leave my wife." NASA has been more about bureaucracy than science for many, many years. |

Clarence William Nelson II (born September 29, 1942) is an American politician and attorney ...A member of the Democratic Party...Nelson received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in political science from Yale University View Quote https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Nelson Yeah, this guy is just another Ivy League political hack. Are there any more questions about why NASA has spent 10s of billions of dollars on a spacecraft that hasn't taken anyone anywhere? |

[#28]
The guy is not an idiot.
He’s a politician lawyer that’s pretty bright. But with essentially no science background and his astronaut time was basically an along for the ride citizen astronaut political stunt “payload specialist.” He’s also in his 80s. If he had been a kick ass new MD/PHD in virology 55 years ago, then spent 20 years researching viruses, then got a ride on the space shuttle to study viruses in space once, then another 40 years basically managing some company that makes antivirals or being in some state and .gov admin roles about viruses, then suddenly became head of NASA- He’d be equally clueless about some pretty basic stuff regarding space. Which is how our government works. |

Dudes over fucking 80 just like every other fucking person running our country. Dudes been in government since 1972, longer than i've fucking been alive. Dude became an "astronaut" as a house rep.
Also, NASA is a very flat org compared to most government agencies so usually the actual center heads are usually much better than the NASA HQ director. Most centers are their own operating "entity" even though there's overlap/coordination on certain things and on the larger programs everyone kind of has a piece of the pie. |

It is the dark side of the moon. It has been. It still is. Especially dark when we've had men up there.
It's only what, this year or the past handful of years, that someone has put the necessary comms into place to bring the light of comms to the surface? This was a budget hearing where funding was 10% less, or more than what was in the PBR. With a significant amount of floor time being devoted to representative who were trying to get justifications for the cuts in their districts, how much time was there for ad hoc funding increases as a reaction to China doing something where we don't seem to have any readily visible mission coverage? Context matters. Full statements matter. Full understandings matter. Anything short is rhetoric. |
