I'd say about 1:17.  It's becoming increasingly prevalent.

That said, very bad luck.

Depends on what track you're at, and what series you're racing, I suppose.

On our honeymoon, Mr PMM and I were driving on Rte. 209 in the Pocono Mountains of PA. Our trip was RUDELY interrupted when a truck, travelling in the opposite direction, lost its tire and it hit us like a frisbee, forcing us into a ditch and causing over $3500 in car repairs (back in '86).

The truck was owned by S & M Waste Oil, co.

Yeah.......

My brother was killed by a spool of SS in '95. A semi was N bound on a 4 lane highway. My brother was in his GMC Jimmy, southbound.  The coil hopped out of a wood sided trailer when the driver of the semi slammed on the brakes. The coil soared over the median and landed square on his lap. From there it bounced in the clear. He was in his early 30's.

A lady and her little baby were in a mini van immediately behind him and witnessed the whole thing. She was freaked out and very fortunate. My brother was not.

More proof that standing with your hands in your pockets at the rear of your mobile operations post while refueling is just ignorant.

Ouch.

Almost as bad as the illegal alien who got on a bus in SoCal and was heading north when a few lengths of rebar fell off a truck on the road ahead.  The bus driver tried to swere to avoid them but one ended up coming up through the floorboard of the bus and impaling her like a shish-ka-bob.

It must have been her time too.

Everytime I see the movie Final Destination and the weird way that fate catches up with them, I think of that incident.

it is statistaically obvious:

this is the only loose truck tire he has seen ever   (1)
the truck tire hits him                                         (1)

1/1 is one hundred percent chance he will be hit everytime there is a loose truck tire.

Do not stand near this man, he is a disaster magnet.

There are certain truck trailer combos that shed (as in lose) at least one tire A DAY PER RIG! It is not as rare as one might think.

Standing next to a road is dangerous if there is truck traffic on it, we do it every day, get complacent about it and no longer see the danger.

One time when I was at work at a major shipping company. I was working by the 'slide', it was a metal chute that fed boxes from another conveyor that was about 30 feet in the air. The limit for the system is 70lbs and no wood. Someone sent a wooden spool that weighed 98lbs. It came down the slide rolling and hit the bar that diverts the packages to us and flew past me. I had just enough time to twist myself to get out of the way it missed me by about 6 inches.

I happened to meet a guy who was hit in the back of the head by a truck tire while he was walking up to a highway rest area.  The tire fell off and bounced just right.  He has a speech problem - like someone with a moderate stroke, but still has pretty good muscle control and can still do lots of normal activities.

ouch.

That didn't look like one wheel, it looked like two, like off a dual rear wheel axle.
Or maybe some kind of super low profile tire or something.
Either way, OUCH.

Just standing there minding his own business . . .

Any word on the extent of his injuries?  He seemed unable to get up, but that may have just been the weight of the dually on his legs.

I thought I read in the caption or somewhere that he suffered primarily a broken leg.
I'd say he's damn lucky if that is correct. With that kind of impact I would be concerned about head and neck trauma when/if his head smacked the pavement/curb/gas pump.

The other scary thing is I'll bet there was a nice pool of gasoline under him waiting to be ignited, and he could not move.

Maybe it's me, but I thought I saw the gas "spray" when he went down...yeah...I thought of that more than broken bones.

so what was that second person doing, robbing him?

hard to tell from the video.

reminds me of a bad accident I witnessed in San Antonio.   A Jeep renegade hit a concrete support head-on at 45mph.   I immediately went to his aid, and was grateful to see 5-6 other people stopping and running to the scene to help.

Unfortunately, the others had no intention of helping the severely injured driver, they were there to rob and steal and fight each other over the spoils.  I chased one dirtbag thru traffic to get the driver's wallet back, and if I'd had a weapon, a few of those jackals would have also gone to the hospital.

After the initial shock of watching him get nailed and replaying it a dozen times, I started wondering what his thoughts were just before the tire hit. "Man gas prices suck! Someone should do something about thi...AAWWW.....AAWWW......IS THAT A TRUCK TIRE!?!....AAWWWW....WHY ME!?!...."

The worst part is the after the tire rolled over him, it bounced off of the gas pump and sat there SPINNING on him........tires do STRNGE things once they are free of the mother ship.

Thank God that lady had the presence of mind to help the guy out and unlock the pump handle and put it back on the pump......

he's lucky he didn't get set afire......
