Anyone get one of these yet ? I don't know if that's a good deal or not, I would like to add an old school AR to the family someday. My concern would be finding a lower that would match the color of the upper.

M16 kit

500 bucks, questionable condition and no lower? Hmmm....I'd rather build a fresh one.

I know what you mean, it's always a crap shoot at Sportsmans Guide, I bought some AK mags they had advertized a few monthes ago as "used condition" and 9 out of the 10 were new, but thats not a 450 dollar rifle kit either.

Will that fit on a normal lower receiver? or are the holes a different size

Also, I'm pretty sure that the FCG has been demilled. That is: the hook is ground off the hammer and the selector tang has been ground off of the disconnector. As well as the selector has had some creative grinding done to it. And it is an AR trigger.

I was in the Marines in the 70's, and I've NEVER seen one without a fwd assist. Some of the ones we had were so worn they were silver, but always a fwd assist.

Also it says it's not a chrome barrel...I'd be very concerned about a 60's vintage unlined barrel.

If your interested in the vintage aspect, why not just build on an A-1 upper...I kinda like the sights anyway.

Another note, out of the 10+ rifles I had issued to me in the course of my career, only a couple were Colt lowers. Had several "GM" rifles, yes, General Motors. Never did get one the infamous "Mattel" guns.

There is no doubt it comes with a semi auto FCG, it says in the ad that some of the small parts are not original.

The AK parts kit that SG was selling were absolute garbage. This has been discussed in the AK forum. Based on that alone, I would avoid these.

Of course, my reply is based on the idea that you will want to shoot this gun, right?

I guess it might be interesting to own a 1st issue "replica" as a wall hanger, but I'm not into that stuff.

I figure the kits were purchased from SARCO, and you can get them cheaper there (cut out the middle man).  Last I knew you could buy the surplus parts from SARCO less all the aftermarket stuff for a much better deal.

These are US Air Force M16 (Colt's Model 604) barreled uppers with handguards, buttstock and screw, grip, and fire control groups removed from old rifles updated with an M16A2 conversion kit.  You are looking at about $250 in parts, along with a bunch of junk stuff, like the cheapest bolt group, charging handle, receiver extension, etc parts that they could find to round it out, or as they say "a few smaller ones are careful reproductions".  Not sure that fire control group is original in the kit pictured, could be junk, or could be real parts that are neutered.

The barreled upper in the sample picture dates from 1964-67.  Barrels from this time frame do not have a chrome chamber, all my non chrome barrels from 64-67 work fine, but others have had real bad experiances such as this:

If not a former rebuild the upper would be gray, and current production lowers are black.

No auto sear, the hammer and sear (the one sits inside the trigger) are semi too.

The US Air Force was one of the first adoptees of the M16 and theirs DID NOT have the foward assist.  That's only something the Army and Marines required.  These may have been from old USAF M16s which have been updated/replaces with M16A2s.

You're right, they are not bad on ammo.  They screwed me for $14 on shipping for a laser bore sighter that weight less the 1/2 pound.  I live 7 miles from their warehouse.  I could have drove down their for less in gas than what they charged.  My wife ordered it for me so I didn't know until after the fact!

Thanks for the info Forest, but my only point was that these parts have been out of service for a long time. I'm aware that some M-16's were made sans fwd assist.

In retrospect, maybe that fact was too obvious to merit my comment....

US Air Force M16, or Colt's Model 604's are still in service.  Parts like these show up because they are being ungraded to M16A2 status, and converted to M4's.

i dont think its a bad deal as long as shipping is ok.

The CDNN uppers are not US Air Force M16's, they are US Army M16A1's, which means they have a forward assist.  They are also the last type of USGI M16A1 upper, as in CH forge codes, and CHROME BORE marked barrels, etc.
