I'm on the side of those who think the first 1000 would have had the fixed carry handle like the A2 and would be the first W000001 to W001000 SN weapons. The Army just goes by NSN - a M4 is a M4, is a M4 no matter the later modification. Memories fade over time, and there is a case of one of the operators who was at the Desert One operation in 1980 that says he carried a M4 Carbine - which we know from the historical record did not yet exist. That is why the visual documentation is so vital. The later XM4 had the double heat shield handguards, 4 position stock, and M4 feedramps, so one item of interest is if the first M4s were just like that but with the M4 Carbine roll mark with the Wxxxxxx SN. View Quote There is a problem with assuming the original configuration of that Serial Number W00004XX. It has been through at least one rework to upgrade it to an M4A1 and had the upper replaced. It probably left the factory with a fixed carry handle. All I can say is anything made before July 1994 probably left the factory with a fixed carry handle. |

Colt M4 Series started at W000001. 6 digits not 7. One too many zeros, means Colt has sold more then 10 million M4s. M4A1 series block range started at W300001. The ones we got issued in 5th SFGA Feb/Mar 95' where W302xxx-W303xxx block range. Attached File FN M4s start with a "Y" prefix. CD |

Thats confusing… I thought they were all marked ‘BURST’, some of which were eventually converted to ‘AUTO’ with the FC designation struck out and/or etched/rolled over. |

So I asked a few vet friends about that, one of them said that the serial number is on somebody's property book, track it from there to the 7 warehouse that it was signed & received from as they have the original reciepts with shipment and issueing. So many unanswered rabbit hole questions after that so I left it alone at the time. What's a property book and what's a 7 warehouse? The rest I get but not the first two considering that I'm just a civilian |
