what have you guys found as the best match for Denny's barrel? has anyone used the various Black Hills 52, 68, 69, and 75gr match stuff? thanks for any leads on a reasonably priced target ammo. ar-jedi ps in case you are wondering what "denny's barrel" is... click here in case you are wondering why i am interested in your ammo... click here |

The 75's (both BH and TAP) did not group well in mine. Federal 69's were the best so far, running around .75 MOA at 100 yds. The 77 SMK's from BH usually shoot well for me, must try them soon.

If the Hornaday 75gr TAP and BH 75gr loading (or MK262 Mod1) do not shoot well, then I'd look somerhing else. My MSTN 1:7 uppers and MRP love them. Typically 0.5MOA at 200M. I have a Lilja barreled RECCE in progress with a 1:8 and expect no less. |
|
|
Slightly related - I'm having decent luck with 77gr SMK handloads in my 1/7 Lilja barrel. They may do well in your Denny's barrel also.
Interestingly enough, my SPR clone is a White Oak 1/7 barrel and it shoots better with 69gr SMKs than it does the 77gr SMK loads. |

Mine grouped ok with Black Hills 77 gr. (0.8" five shots group @ 100 yds.) But it absolutely liking my reloads of 55 gr. Sierra gameking softpoint boat tail over 25.5 grains of AA2230 powder - 0.5" groups at 100 yds. and 1.1" groups at 200 yds. Scope is a Leupold CQ/T 1-3x. BTW, this chambering is still a little tight for Winchester Q3131A and Fed XM193, both were tough to extract (unfired rounds) and 3-4" groups at 200 yds.

Mine seem to like the Federal Match 69gr. Both shoot .5 at 100, 5 shots. The 75 gr Black Hills was ok printing 1.4 at 200. I haven't had time to try 77 grainers yet.
55 grain Win shoot into .8 at 100, this surprised me as I was just using it for barrel break in. Each barrel is rule unto it self, even barrels made on the same day by the same Mfg. I could have used Mike Rock 5R barrels on this project, but how many guys will be willing to fork over an extra $200 per barrel for another .3" group. My goal was to make an accurate upper/barrel combo that anyone could afford. I do have a number of users reporting groups under .5 from these barrels. The right ammo, a great shooter, who knows. My best advice from experience with my own personal Recons is to try the Federal first. Denny |
|
I believe you have achieved the objective , the Recon barrel is just as accurate as my 20" JP 1:8 supermatch barrel/upper. I now have a dedicated carbine for local 3-gun matches. Thanks Denny for a great product & fast service. |
|
|
Also know that the 75 TAP is loaded hotter than the B.H. loads [75,77], or any match load.

Art Should be end the end of next week. Keep them great rails coming. Denny |

gents, seems like quite a few like the Fed 69gr match -- i'll try it out. thanks for all of the input above. ar-jedi |

By no means am I the greatest shot on the planet, but...
I haven't been having trouble with the heavies, BH or Hornady, at a 100 yards. The last trip to the range was with 75gr from BH and I managed a couple of 5 shot 1" groups. My groups aren't as consistent, or tight as I'd like. But I'm not doing a very good job keeping a consistent POA either. So, I'll keep practicing and see how it goes. |

Someone please try the black hills red 68 heavy match and 69 smk if you get a chance, I know have different brand bullets, the 69 being a sierrra match king, the 68g is a hornaday - both are much cheaper than the federal, and I want to shoot this rifle a lot...
here's some info I got as a response to the question about the 2 bullet differences: "They are the same kind of bullet. Due to the ogive differences, the Hornady is a bit longer than the Sierra. Apparently that causes it to have a shorter "neck" when it hits shoft, fleshy targets. Fragmentation is about the same for both, but the shorter neck on the Hornady gives it an edge over the Sierra. For target shooting, most people have found the Sierra to be slightly more accurate at long ranges than the Hornady, but that is up to your rifle to decide." |

Mine likes Black Hills blue-box moly'd 68's & 69's, C&R Ammo's 69's (with cannalure), and pretty fair with BH "blemished" Mk262... doesn't do too hot with 75gr TAP or a couple of 62gr fmj loads I've tried.
Best groups seem to be with the C&R and BH 69's which hold well under 1moa. The Mk262 was right at 1moa with an occasional flyer about an inch outside the main group. The 75gr TAP and 62gr fmj stuff was closer to 2-3 moa. ETA: Anybody shoot with a can? Mine shifted zero about 4-5moa down with a can mounted... (she's getting a new heavier contoured Kreiger, so we'll see what happens then.) |

El taggo, 'cus I got one coming as well....
My SPR with the WOA 1/7 barrel seems to really like 75gr TAP and Black Hills 75gr BTHP. Lucky for me I've got Black Hills 68gr, 69gr, 75 gr, and 77 gr in my ammo closet right now. If I get out to the range soon I post a report and pics on each type of ammo through my Recon Barrel.. -sc |

tagged cause i have the recon barrel in hand but still figuring out how i want to configure it.

wish would have been able to.
the soon to be wifey has so much she wants to do and for some reason they keep including me. next weekend for sure though. |

Update: Sorry I took so long to update, but I forgot about this thread! I first shot my Recon Rifle at 25 yards using xm 193. I did the shoot one, clean, shoot one clean thing for the first 10 rounds or so. I wasn't trying too hard to use the same point of aim but I got basiclly a ragged hole. I moved out to 50 yards to dial in the Compact ACOG and start shooting 5 round groups. I switched to 69 gr SMK's by Black Hills. I cleaned in between each 5 round string. I again wasn't trying for maximum accuracy as I was still breaking in the barrell. I let her cool and shoot my SPR at 100 yards getting my usual 0.5" groups with Hornady TAP 75 gr. I was running out of time and ammo so I tried a few groups with the Recon Rifle at 100 yds using the TAP. Basicly, I got 3 round groups you could cover with a dime, but with vertical stringing. I've concluded that my SPR has more repeatable accuraccy than the Recon Rifle, but the SPR is well broken in (about 500 rounds through her total). I must mention that all shots were from a bipod with no other support from a bench. -sc |

did you try the xm at 100yds? |
||
|
Mine likes 69 grain federals. 75 grain TAP also shoots well, 75 grain BTHP from hornady does not shoot well, also does not like to feed. I know it is probably a sin to shoot wolf out of this upper, but has anyone else experienced problems with it feeding?
|
|
mine does great with 55gr. xm!!!!!
really odd but when i was sighting in i got slightly over moa with xm193 with reman blackhills 68gr. i was getting wide clovers dont have exact measurements since i dont understand how to measure but all the groups where under a inch from the outermost edge of the hole at 100yds |
|
Nope, will try tomorrow -sc |

well i tried it yesterday with some real match ammo and have to say i dont think i wanna shoot it no more unless it's with match ammo!
69gr. federal matchking bt was amazing!!!!!! had little two inch shoot-n-sees and had to look twice cause i thought the shot wandered off! but they were on top of each other! with 77gr. fed match it was doing the same. couldnt compare the two cause when it came time to try the 77gr. it started getting windy. but there was a few groups that were ragged holes! i feel that it likes the 77gr better though. hopefully next week ill remember to bring my camera to snap some pics of the groups |
|
right now mine is a toss up between 69gr and 77gr federal gmmk's factory ammo.
think the main thing holding me back on the groups is that i using a ta31f, i think that the groups will tighten up greatly with a high power scope but as of right now im content with the groups im getting with the acog |
|
I needed this info. Got my barrel last week . Haven't hit the range since my build is not done. But the barrel looks great in matte. Thanks Denny.

now that more folks have denny's SS RECON barrels in use, any more input on ammo selection? thanks, ar-jedi |

I'm still waiting for a post about reasonably priced ammo. Yes, I know what each of you finds to be best, but what are you finding to be less expensive but still good?

My Recon barrel seems to enjoy Black Hills BB 55gr ammo as much as anything else, about 1.25 MOA. On a good day I can manage about 1.5 MOA with M-855PD. I am also using a TA31F, and I may have the worst factory trigger ever.
