Thanks for the info and history lesson.  Made me think twice on my choice(s) of carriers.

Your above statement is dead on, but contrary to the "as good as" thinking that seems to be embedded in many around here.  IMO, FWIW, YMMV..........................................

While all carriers appear to be of the S/A design, it appears that the older Young carrier has more meat at the back.  And it seems to loose more and more as it evolves.  Is there a reason for that?  Do they all weigh the same?

I will go with the New Young MFG style. Thanks Wes.

im not good enough yet to actually notice the accuracy difference but there is a difference in cycling and what not. i have acutally taken it out until i feel that the rifle needs to be more accurate and then plan on putting it back in to see.

I'd be in for one immediately and one for the future build I have planned...................................well, actually, there's more than one AR-10 upper/rifle planned, so I'll probably need a few.

Wes,

Thanks for the side-by-side pics and the weights.  I'd have guessed the new design to be slightly heavier, rather than slightly lighter, from the pics.

Looks like there's some "flat" parts on the sides of the carrier there. Any idea why?

Hello...AR noobie here.

Is there any advantage to putting one of these into a general perpose / SHTF type rifle??  Or are these just for accuracy / precision type rifles trying get that last .1 MOA??

What about the bolt?  I would think that the bolt would be just as important as the BC.  It would be nice if both were made by the same Manf.  (And MPI)

Oh...thanks for the info.  I had seen LBC carriers and was wondering what they were all about.

I'm sure, but why are these the best?  Does it improve accuracy?  Does it improve reliability?  Easier to clean?

HERE IS A PIC OF THE COMPETITION CARRIER PAUL HAD DAN YOUNG MAKE FOR US:

photos.imageevent.com/smglee/mstn/DSCN1280.jpg

AS YOU CAN SEE, IT IS OF CONVENTIONAL DESIGN, BUT CUT AWAY TO REDUCE WEIGHT. AS WITH ALL OF YOUNG MFG BOLT CARRIERS, IT IS HEAT TREATED FIRST AND THEN RECEIVES ITS FINAL MACHINING. AS YOU CAN SEE, IT IS ALSO HARD CHROMED. IT THE COMPETITION CARRIER TIPS THE SCALE AT A SVELDT 8.2 OZ.

WHY A LIGHTWEIGHT CARRIER? IN COMPETITION SHOOTING, A SMOOTH RUNNING, FAST CYCLING GUN IS WHAT YOU WANT. MINIMIZING RECIPROCATING MASS MINIMIZES APPARENT RECOIL. THE RIGHT BALANCE FOR RELIABILITY IS ACHIEVED VIA CAREFUL TUNING OF THE ADJUSTABLE GAS PORT, BUFFER WEIGHT, RECOIL SPRING WEIGHT AND LENGTH, AND OBVIOUSLY BUFFER WEIGHT.

FWIW,

I run this carrier in both my 17" "lightweight" 3Gun rifle (with a non-adjustable rifle length gas system and a standard carbine buffer) and in my 14.5" Noveske Midlength barrel, with the Gemtech suppressor.  Both operate flawlessly even when filthy, with everything from "light" Federal match to XM193.

I have a Youngs NM Carrier in my M16 (RDIAS) that has well over 10K rounds on it and still looks almost new.  Helps with cleaning after a long day at the range.  Does he still make the M16 profile (I'd love to have a spare to leave in another upper).

hmm, bet that cutaway comp carrier might work to help some of these guys with barrels with little bore past the gas port. only ones I've seen like that before were on OAI's Simunition carriers.

I just might have to try that.  I  have another chopped rifle length barrel in the works right now.

the original "Dissipator" design from COLT back in the '60s used a similar carrier. They might have been on to something, it was also used in the belt fed version.

Ya, the last chopped rifle barrel project I did was having cycling issues when I went with an M16 carrier and a 9mm buffer with Wolf ammo.  I sort of expected it to with that large of a moving mass and underpowered ammo, but it ran fine when I dropped it down to either an RRA enhanced carrier and/or an "H" buffer OR went with quality ammo.  I was just trying to see how far I could push it.

If I can get my hands on one of these lightened carriers, I may just play with that concept.

JP does offer a stainless carrier.

Wouldn't the stainless wear out rather quickly as opposed to a standard material?

What would wear on it?  The exterior is usually well lubricated and the interior is roller burnish hardened (or something like that) and you would expect the gas rings to wear faster.

Just passing thoughts.

Ah, I did some research and roller burnishing is essentially a form of cold rolling. So it does increase surface hardness minorly, but I still don't think 416 stainless is the best option for a carrier. I think that chroming or a higher grade lubricational coating would still be a more logical option. YMMV.

You are more likely to drop your bolt carrier in a lake than wear one out.

Somebody back me up with figures here...

I ran the JP SS carrier in my race gun for two years and you couldn't tell it from new.  Also ran one in the Tactical Response carbine class (1800 rounds / 2 days), same deal.
