I wonder if they'll come out with a fixed stock for those in the blue states.

Yet another flash-in-the-pan Wunder Rifle..........
I'll pass. thanks. |
I'm actually amazed that I like the look of the gun.....very surprising.
They made a big deal on the design of the handgrip but if you ask me, that's a standard A2 grip on the L version and a SAW grip on the heavy....wonder what else has been exaggerated . Bomber |

Hey! You're not supposed to post a real article with facts and hard info!
The SCAR-L is 7.7lbs empty.
They should be called the SCAR-HEAVY and the SCAR-EVENHEAVIER. |
I like the look of these. One SCAR-L and one SCAR-H will be coming home with me when they become available.

Wish someone would get their acronyms squared away.......

The original prototypes has the SAW derived grip, which was changed to the A2 type grip in later models. And from the sound of things (Adapters are available so that individual users can modify the pistol grip to suit their hand size - from small to large.) they may be using something like the MIAD, and if not, individual users could be using other grip styles. I like the design about as much as I can without having one in my hands. I do hope that FN will make a longer handguard version. Thanks for the info Victor, there are a few new tidbits in there |

Thanks Victor--some new pics here, and a few new tidbits.
Don't mean to hijack, but has anyone heard anything lately about civilian availability of the SCAR? There were a couple threads on this topic last spring after the SHOT Show that speculated that the SCAR WOULD be made available to civilians based on the fact that: 1. FN has a US plant (so it is legally possible) and 2. FN apparently did announce that semi-auto civilian versions of its P90 and F2000 would be made (although they're not out yet). Anybody know more? Will |

A well written article. subliminal tag for later drooling Something that seems so scarce these days. subliminal tag for drooling later
Having trouble coming to terms with it? You will not buy piston upper for your AR? |
Thanks Vic
The stock no longer looks like a humpback whale, good deal. With the 40mm launcher installed, it looks like it'll preclude the use of 20rd mags. Only wish it was designed and made at home |
Hope this system is all it is supposed to be. Only knock I have against it just by looking at pictures is that the distance between the line of sight and the bore will require some training for CQB use.
I take a H version for sure! Hope FN is smart enough to offer a civilian version before 2008 because who knows what will happen then.
I believe FN is doing just that, I hope they make a longer handguard for the 16" barrel version
I spoke with the regional FN rep recently, and he assured me that there will be civilian versions availalb.e I think you'll be fairly happy at the prices, also. Think Colt AR15 price area, or slightly better. Hopefully I'll be shooting a post sample version by this spring.

This is the logical evolution of the assault rifle concept. All the lessons learned from FAL, AK, AR etc. built from the ground up, with soldier input all the way. I say congrats and I can't wait to get my hands on one (two?) |
Same weight as an M16A2. |

DAMN!! I'll need to [Insert official AR15.com motto here]!! Cheers |
well that does it
we should change the site name to SCAR.com. I like the thing, but cannot understand how anyone could design, build and refine the M16/M4 replacement in less than a year...............and proclaim it the successor to the venerable AR design, just like that [snaps finger] Like I said, looks good, sounds like a good idea, but we have become an instant-gratification lot- that is very quick to pass judgment. we shall see |
SOCOM is pushing big army to accept SCAR so big army $$ pay for it, not SOCOM. Currently no one knows what's happening; the cancelling of OICW Increment 1, the HK416, SCAR - there is no clear direction at the moment.
If "Big Army" does go to the SCAR, I'm sure everyone at Colt will be really happy.

Truer words are seldom spoken. Take care, Clint |

Why fix what works so well? |

I'm inclined to believe the above since it's coming from two individuals who KNOW what they're talking about. |

I like what Thekatar said: "This is the logical evolution of the assault rifle concept. All the lessons learned from FAL, AK, AR etc. built from the ground up, with soldier input all the way."
God, I hope this thing delivers on it's promises. Looks good! (I mean the concept looks good; the gun has looks only a Bad Mutha could love!) It would be so refreshing to see the military procurement establishment get something right, instead of gold-plated toilet seats and $600 hammers! I notice the article did end with some "fightin' words" when it said: "US units using M4s may also eventually replace them with Mk16s, since it is a significant improvement over any AR-derived small arm." |
I like the design. I'm not crazy about a 7.7lb empty weight for a 5.56mm; but if FN can sell it at the same price point as a Colt M4, it clearly has the advantage. I'd definitely plunk the money down on one if they were available.
And ~1.4lbs Heavier than an M4 w/ a 13 oz RAS. The question is, is a gas piston, foldable stock, and faster removable barrel worth the extra weight? |
I would bet a civvie version could save a good chunk of weight by going with a simpler stock without all the mechanisms.
