I started a new project to machine.  I'm calling it the AR45 receiver.  It's an AR type receiver that will accept unmodified M3A1 grease gun magazines.  I got the .45 cal upper receiver from Olympic Arms.  It will have a mag release like the AR, so you'll be able to drop the mag out with the hand that your holding the rifle with, while your reaching for another mag.  This should be an interesting project.  You can get all the details at my website  www.cncgunsmithing.com  I'll post updates here as I make progress on the receiver.

Below is a sneak peak of what the receiver will look like...

Thanks,
Justin

Very cool.

Any plans for that thick block of aluminum behind the mag? Sure looks like it needs hollowing out.

Any chance that you'll make the same thing for a 10mm round?  Since the .45 ACP and the 10mm round are so close to each other in overall length and diameter it seems like you could use an M3 grease gun magazine and maybe modify the lips just a bit.  I know that I can load 10mm in my 1911 mags and it doesn't seem out of place.  Just a thought.  It's something that I've been wanting to do and I've been too damn lazy to get around to it!

This would make a SWEET SBR (which I can't have), a very nice carbine or even an AR pistol.  Tagged for future consideration and OT money alottment.

I assume from the drawing that the bolt does not hold open with the last firing.  Is the lower a standard ar15 forging just machined differently?

This is a very needed thing.  I can't believe the big names aren't already making one.

Do you have any exclusive rights to this so you can make some $$$ on it?

I needs one!!!  (I have the Oly right now)

WOW!  Billet!  Any plan for a forging?  Estimate on the end user cost for a billet unit?

edit:  I checked out your website.  Outstanding pictures of the CNC process for milling receivers.  Thanks for taking the time to put up photos.

Are these going to be available for sale, or is this just a personal build?  I know Cavalry Arms has plans to build aluminum lowers that will accept GG mags with the Hahn magblock.  SNS Industries had promised to build dedicated 45 ACP lowers about a year ago, but they seem to have given up on it supposedly because the sunset of the ban drove up demand of standard AR stuff so much that they didn't want to slow production of basic rifles to persue it.  I too am amazed that no one has mass produced something like this.  I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Sorry for the late reply guys.  I've been busy all weekend working on the AR45.  It takes a while to get the next operation programmed and everything ready to set the CNC machine up to start cutting chips again.  I got the 2nd operation finished over the weekend, I'll update my website and this forum tonight when I get home.

As for the guys wanting to buy these AR45 receivers, I really hope to be able to sell these.  Since I'm not a licensed manufacture, I'll only be able to complete them to 80%.  I want to get the ATF's approval before I sell any of these, just in case they consider my 80% receiver to be a firearm.  Dealing with the ATF and getting approved can take a long time, so what I might do in the mean time, is finish a receiver to around 50%.  A 50% receiver will need a little more machine work to complete, unlike most 80% receivers where you basically just drill some holes.  These receivers will be fairly expensive, because they are being machined from a billet of material and every feature will have to be machined, unlike a forging where it already basically looks like a receiver.  But you can bet you'll have a truly one of a kind receiver at your gun range.

Let me see if I can answer everybodies questions....

pogo:

Any plans for that thick block of aluminum behind the mag? Sure looks like it needs hollowing out.
I'm not sure I know what your talking about?  This receiver won't need the mag block behind the mag.

Paradude54:

Any chance that you'll make the same thing for a 10mm round?
I haven't really thought about it, but I might.  Call me stupid, but I've never even seen a 10mm bullet...haha.  If 10mm ammo will fit in a 45 mag, you should be able to just change the upper to a 10mm and use the grease gun mags.

mongo001:

This would make a SWEET SBR
YEAH!!!  Your right.  But where would a person find a barrel for it?  I guess you might have to chop off your own barrel.

ChuckD:

I assume from the drawing that the bolt does not hold open with the last firing. Is the lower a standard ar15 forging just machined differently?
Right, the bolt won't be held open on the last round.  But you'll be able to pull the bolt back, and press the bolt catch in and this will keep the bolt held back in place....so in case you need to clear a jam or something like that.

wildearp: I hope to make a little money with this idea if I can get approved by the ATF.

Any plan for a forging
No, not at this time.  Dies and setup cost for a forged AR45 lower is way out of my price range.

If there are enough people interested in these, we might be able to work out a group buy.  The only thing I'm affraid of is the price.  I just hope the price isn't too much, because there will be alot of machine time involved in these.

I hope I've answered everybodies questions.  Let me know if I forgot somebody.

I'll get the website updated tonight.

Thanks,
Justin

I'm not sure which setup I prefer between the Cav billet lower and this one.   I like the idea of the stock mag release but a multi caliber SBR would be better served with the Cav arms billet lower as it will still run .223 mags.

Any chance of incorporating an ejector slot to use a colt 9mm style ejector?    The oly spring thingy is hokey at best and using a fixed ejector would make it much easier to reconfigure the Oly setup.    It would only be 1 slot to mill and a simple part to manufacture.   You could pin the ejector in if you want to use it or run the stock oly setup.

( I'm considering one of the Ameetec side charging uppers and this ejector setup would solve issues with having to drill holes)

Probably not at this time, since I'm already on my way with this current design.  Maybe a design later on will have that feature.

That is beautiful!  I've wanted that reciever for two years.  I dream of building a wide body AR reciever and double stack mags for the new cartridges like the 458 Socom, 50 Beowulf, and the WSSMs.

Hey Justin, that will go good with the AR10 and the 15 on your site.  Still drool over the work on those....  Are you just modifying the standard ar to accept a 45 cal mag, or are you actually changing overall length dimensions?  I ask because if you are leaving o.a.l the same, you could just take a 0% forging and machine out the magwell to fit the GG mag, couldn't you?

Off subject, but what kind of VMC do you do this work on?  Could a standard CNC mill do this, maybe like an Cin Arrow???  Just wondering, we have a couple of those at work and would like to play with on.

Good work and good luck.

Hello again, sort of answered my own question on using the forging, didn't read that it was a wider magwell until after that.

About the barrel, I have been talking with Shilen in Texas about getting a barrel for a blowback 45 auto.  They will cut a barrel to 15" in pistol calibers.  I beleive he said, if memory serves, that it would be 97 bucks?  Also quoted me 1-2 weeks.

Looks like you did tease me.

I'm out if 80% or less is all you can do. I don't have the tools or place to finish a receiver. For me it's 100% or nothing.

But it sure looks like a great product! Good luck and congratulations!

bigokie:

...what kind of VMC do you do this work on? Could a standard CNC mill do this, maybe like an Cin Arrow?
99% of the time I use one of our Fanuc Robodrills.  We also have Fadals and a Haas, but I like the Robodrills the best.  The pic below shows a pic of a robodrill that kinda looks like ours.  But most of our Robodrills have pallet changers on them.  So instead of the machine setting there while the person is changing out the parts, the machine change pallets and keeps running while a person is changing out the parts on the pallet.  I have never heard of a Cin Arrow, so I can't say if that machine would work or not.

Boom:

Can you make it a 60 or 70% lower?
I don't know, we'll have to see.  Keep in mind I want to CMA until I get approved by the ATF, so I may just offer like a 50% receiver until I can sell 80%'ers  10%, 50%, or 80%, it's all relative.  It's like saying "a little bit"  A little bit to me may be completly different from your little bit...haha.  I just want to make sure nobody would consider it a firearm until I get approved to sell my so called 80% receiver.  If you notice, every 80% receiver out there is machined a little bit differently.  There are no set in stone rules on this.

These will not have mag blocks that you have to insert will they? I hope not.
No, there won't be a mag block.  The AR45 receiver is being machined for the grease gun mags, just like the AR15 receiver gets machined for the AR15 mag.

bigokie:

They will cut a barrel to 15" in pistol calibers.
Maybe I miss understand you, but why would you want a pistol with a 15" barrel?  If I were going to make one of these a pistol, I would want the barrel at least under 10", probably more like 7"

Thanks,
Justin

Take the M3 mag, and tap the lips in slightly to retain the 10mm in the correct position....

With the M3 mag set up like this, the mag is good for any caliber based on the 45acp case and the .423 diameter case (40 S&W, 357 SIG, 10MM)....   (35) rounds of 40 S&W in the M3 mag been happening for approx 2yr with the Uzi people.   I have shot std 10mm from the Uzi, did not impress me, was lighter recoil than the 230gr bullets I had 1080 fps, maybe a heavier dose of slower powder might remedy that.....

Justin, I just meant that that is the shortest length they will sell.  I would probably cut it off and make it a 7.5".  Just an option, lots cheaper than paying for a full barrel and cutting off 10" to use?!  Good luck, look forward to seeing the finished product.
