My revolver experience is limited to:

Ruger Security Six 6", shot many, many, many years ago.  Pretty nice.

Smith Model 60 2" shot many years ago.  Very nice.

Smith 642, my current carry gun and the only revolver I currently own.  Love it

So .... something cool looking, appropriate for handgun hunting.  Nickel plated perhaps?

Something you would be proud to hand down thru the generations

Avoid any nickle finish, they scratch VERY easily. If you need a shiny pimp gun, go for chrome.

You need a S&W N frame.

For handgun hunting in the humid Florida climate it should be a stainless .44 Magnum.
A 629 Classic  will serve you well, it is a pretty gun, shoots great, and the pride of ownership factor is huge

I handled some guns at the local BassPro.  Ruger GP100 357 6in and the Smith 357 6in (probably the 686).

How different are the 686 and the 629?  Is it just caliber?

The frame on the 629 is a large N frame. The 686 is a mid-size L frame. The grips are different sizes too.

I would recommend that you use other individuals' revolvers to try them out until you find one you like.  I'd let you try my S&W 686 if we lived near each other.  How did I come to the conclusion I wanted my 686?  I had a gun catalog that rated revolvers and what they were good for.  The 686 (regular 6 shot) had the best rating for police use, self defense, hunting and fishing, and I believe there were two more areas that now escape me.  Do some homework and try them out.  You'll get one perfect for you.

find you a good pre-lock example of either of the above-mentioned SW models.

Danpass,

I took a quick photo. The 629 is the large N frame with an 8 3/8" barrel, the 686 is the medium L frame with a 6 " barrel.
For hunting whitetail, I'd rather go with a .44 Mag.

I have a Ruger Super Redhawk and a GP100 and while they are fine guns, the pride of ownership that a S&W revolver gives me is not reached by a Ruger, even though they perform perfectly well.

Many have recommended the 686/629 Smith's, and they are nice guns, but if you are looking for something to hand down through the generations I would go with an Anaconda in .45 LC or .44 mag. They make very nice hunting pistols and if you've paid any attention to the latest gun pricing the Colts keep appreciating in value.... since Colt has entirely quit making double action revolvers they definitely won't be getting any cheaper or going down in resale value. The Anaconda is a very sturdy and reliable hunting platform. I have one and it is a very good shooter. Just another alternative to consider. Not the cheapest out there but will hold it's value in the years to come.

If looking for a future family heirloom, go with a Colt or pre-lock S&W. If you are looking for something as tough as an anvil, look at a stainless Ruger.
If you have money to burn and can REALLY shoot....Freedom Arms.

P.S. I'm not questioning your skills, The Freedom is just the only thing I've ever seen that exceeds the abilities of anyone I have ever shot with.

If you want to save a lot of time, money and aggravation go with a F/A Model 83 in an appropriate chambering, you will never need another Revolver. They are a bargain in the long run.

First choice would be a Dan Wesson in .41 mag. There 41's were nearly custom and quite nice.

Next I'd say a old vaquero in .44 mag

Maybe a Colt anaconda?
