Practical Rifle Match FAQ

Where and When:

Practical rifle matches are on the second Saturday of every month.  The matches are held at Tri County Gun Club (www.TCGC.org).  Address is 13050 SW Tonquin Road,
Sherwood, OR 97140.  Sign up starts at 8:30 but it’s beneficial to come in around 8:00am.   If you are not member of Tri County Gun Club then you will need to talk to another member or wait by the front gate till some one shows up as the gates are locked unless you are a member.  If the gates are open, come on in but you will need to get through the next set of locked gates too so wait till a member shows and follow them in.

Note: There is a punch key pad on the gate and sometimes “223308” or “308223” works but don’t bet on it.

Once in the first gate take an immediate left, and proceed through the next gate.  Go straight till you get to the first stop sign.  You will be at a 4 way intersection; you want to take a left. Go up the dirt road till you come to another road and intersection, take another left and follow the road as it curves to the right .  There will be a road to the left as you drive, do not go this way.  Continue down the dirt road and you should see a large metal storage shed/locker on your right and you want to continue going straight.  You will come to a big hill going down and will lead you into a large, sunken gravel quarry.  You are at the right place.  Park on the left or right side of the road and walk down to the sign up tents below.

What to Bring:

#1 A sponsor; If you can find a member to go with you it helps a lot the first time.  But if you don’t have one it’s no biggie and someone will be kind enough to help you through your first match. (Required)

#2 A lunch; Matches last from 9AM to 4PM sometimes, other days we are done at 1:30PM.  Food is not provided so if you get hungry you need to pack in the grub and be able to carry it with you or leave it in the car.  (If you leave it in the car you might have a tough time getting it, there is no “Lunch Breaks”).  Water and an out house are provided.

#3 Proper Clothing; It’s a giant gravel pit….and yes, it can get muddy…..really muddy.  Wear water proof boots and clothing you don’t mind getting dirty.  Also dress according to the weather.  If it looks like it’s going to rain then pack in some rain gear.  Matches don’t stop because of rain.

#4 Proper Gear; This is a personal decision, some guys wear full ammo pouches, belts and other do-dads to help carry their ammo, mags and other uber-cool gear.  Many matches require you to reload on the fly and having an ammo pouch can help, esp. when you can’t drop the mag on the ground.  There is no rule to requiring anything any many do very well without it.  :-p

#5 Firearms; Targets range from 2 yards to 300 yards in distance.  Bring a rifle which can hit those distances, and hit them quickly. The matches are timed so using a 50 cal to hit the 300 yard targets don’t work so well with the 5 yard double taps.  Most people bring AR15’s, AK’s and a few FAL’s mostly.  You will want to bring a pistol as well with at least 2 mags.  If you don’t have one don’t worry, there are plenty of guys out there willing to lend you one for your turn.  You must use the same rifle all match.

#6 Ammo; Rounds vary greatly from the type of match, distance, and of course the shooter.  Most bring 150 rounds and seem to be about right.  If you are having trouble hitting a certain target you are able to move on to the next to save time and ammo.  Bring 20 rounds of pistol ammo to be safe.  Remember these numbers are minimum and are different for everyone.  IMPORTANT: NO STEEL CORE OR ARMOR PIERCING AMMO IS ALLOWED AND WILL GET YOU THROWN OUT!  Magnets are provide so you can check before the match starts.

#7 Safety Gear; Safety is very important so mind those P and Q’s.  Safety glasses are required, hearing protection is optional but highly recommended.  You will need a rifle case for you rifle and a holster for your pistol.  YOU ARE NOT TO UNPACK YOUR RIFLE TILL YOU ARE READY TO SHOOT.  So ready your rifle the night before or at your parked car.  A safety area is provided to work on a rifle but not at the individual stages. Barrel flags are not required.

#8 Money; Practical Rifle cost $15, $20 if after 9AM.  This is to make sure people are present for the 9AM safety and walk through talk at the sign up tents.

#9 HAVE FUN, it’s a great time!  Any questions you have will be eagerly answered by any of the guys there!

Suggestions for the weenies:

Bring a chair if you have problems standing.
Wear knee pads if your worried about a boo-boo.
