Edit: I ended up just getting 5 of each, since it's only for range use and I won't be relying on the gun. New to AK's and plan to pick up a WASR-10 or PSA next time I find a decent deal, and want to grab some magazines ahead of what political nonsense may occur. The AK will be a plinking range toy, and nothing more. PMAGs are $12, KCI steel are $8. I was going to get 10 PMAGs and 1 KCI just to have a steel mag for aesthetics. Now I'm debating for $8 if I should just get 5 PMAGs and 5 KCI's. Any opinions from those that have used both? I love PMAGs in my AR's of course, but not sure about the plastic lug on the AK ones. Don't think I would go with either Magpul (they do make great stuff, but this discussion is limited to AK mags) nor KCI as a first choice. IMO Bulgarian ribbed steel mags, Circle 10 mags or the slab side Bulgarian polymer mags with reinforcements are probably the best mags deals these days. Almost any NOS or excellent condition surplus Chinese, Russian or former eastern bloc mags > domestic (Century US Palm mags are decent) or Korean stuff. Even ghetto goblin rusted out AK47 mags will most likely work after some TLC. Thankfully, mags are not a usual point of failure for AK47s so is really hard to go wrong with them. That being said, you will not be unhappy with lower tier AK PMAGs. No experience with KCI AK mags, but they do make sometimes awesome and sometimes jam-o-matic Glock drums for PCCs; people can use them in pistols, but that is just silly. |

If you just want some beater range mags, RTG has 20x packs of mags for $99. They are AC Unity plastic mags, but I've heard they work well enough. I really wish they would do a 10x 30rd & 10x 40rd package, rather than 20x of 1 size. I really should buy a pack of each and sit on them. With inflation, it as cheap as AK mags ever were. I remember the good old days of $5 metal Chinese & Combloc mags, but that was 15 years ago and left with $250 Romanian AKs. I'm stocked pretty good on AK mags (been buying for 25 years), but wouldn't hesitate to jump in on this if I didn't have any mags. I may still get the 20x pack of 40rd mags as I got rid of my 40rd mags years ago as I didn't care for the size. The more I type, the more I am talking myself into ordering some mags. But, I am pretty good on AK mags. I still find mags whenever I am in the garage cleaning stuff out. I have everything from a sole 15rd .223 Norinco Ak mag to Valmet green waffle 30rd AK mag to a 20rd Hungarian. Unfortunately, I sold/traded my Chinese bakelite and drums years ago for way too little money. Same with .223 30rd Weigers that I bought for $9 from Kvar way back in the day and thought they were expensive at the time for an AK mag. |
| Also, as mentioned above, definitely get some mags that are good to go. An AK is nothing without magazines, so get some that are decent. I remember when Bulgarian 30 & 40rd waffle mags were under $10-12 each, and that was paying a premium over milspec surplus mags ($4-5 in decent condition, $1-3 for rusted/dented mags). I picked up some $8 Valmet waffle mags when they came in and thought I overpaid as they had some wear on them and I really should have gotten the nicer ones for $10-12. My 5 pack of 20rd Hungarian mags that somebody tossed in on a trade are coveted now. So definitely buy the some decent mags. Worst case is you hold on to them and a over 15rd ban comes into play. I lived and bought through the 1994-2004 10rd mag limit, so it does happen. |

PSA polymer mags are inexpensive and just as tough as Arsenal mags. They fixed the loose last round thing from the first batch even though functionally it didn't matter. I prefer Arsenal waffles, Toth machine or PSA polymer to steel because of weight and corrosion issues. I suspect the combloc military went that direction for similar reasons. Arsenal and toth clones are close to $50 each. PSA AK103 mags are $27 each. Look up mrgunsandgear review on YouTube on these, he couldn't break them or get them to fail. The only issue he saw was basically a cosmetic one where the last round rattled a little on the follower, this was corrected before the 103 mags came out when they were still making waffles. He tested their waffle mags, now they're just making 103 style slab sides. Steel mags are good too but almost the same price in unissued condition so unless you find a really good deal on steel I'd prefer polymer mags. My AK74 mags were all polymer and I never had any issues. |
