hello, should i buy this? a good friend's dad is offering to sell me this AK plus everything shown in the photo for $800. it's a maadi, and at the moment this is the only pic i have. my friend said he can get me more pics this weekend, but he told me stamped on the receiver is: A.C.C. INT/INTRAC. KNOX, TN. EGYPT and then on the other side is, R.P.M. SEMI AUTOMATIC RIFLE. MAADI COMPANY. EGYPT. from the research i've done here and at akfiles it seems that this would be one of the better models. he can't tell me much about it, other than he bought it from a guy who didn't use it much and he didn't use it much either but it shoots well. who knows. i had been wanting an AK for some time and when the prices shot up, i just couldn't swing it. i haven't been able to look at it in person, but i expect more pics after the weekend and i will post them up. i was hoping to get any suggestions and advice so i could make a good decision on it. i would really prefer a shorter barrel, would it be a bad idea to cut this one down to 14.5, then crown, thread, and pin a break? also i haven't found any info on how the FSB attaches or if i could just move it closer to the gas block if i were to shorten this barrel. i'm not familiar with these AKs other than what i've been reading here and a couple other forums. i'd really appreciate some advice from the AK experts! thanks a lot in advance. from the pic it looks like the scope mount replaces the trigger pin and hammer pin. if i wanted to remove the mount i suppose i would need a pin set? i would also like a traditional stock and hand grip to match the OEM hand guards. i guess i want to know if i should spend the 800 on this and two mags, 760 rds, and sling, scope and mount. and then make some changes, or just keep shopping for one that fits my needs a little better. thanks again. here's the only pic i have:

If you don't mind an honest opinion, I'd say you can do much better than that poor thing. And you can do much better than The AK Files - it's generally regarded as a forum for tinfoil hatters and crazies, not really for any AK discussion. That's probably where "it's one of the better models" comes in.  But more on topic. It's above the Egyptian MISR-90 and MISR rifles in quality, for sure. But it's pretty standard Egyptian quality which is a bit below the average in terms of countries that made the rifles. And take into consideration it was put together for commercial export for US sales. In other words, it's OK but not great. That said, it may be a wonderfully accurate and fun rifle to shoot. Who knows.
If you're wanting a traditional looking AK and want that rifle to start with, you can certainly do that. But prepare yourself to spend lots more money on top of that $800. You'll need to get a new barrel and remove/pay for the removal of the front sight base and gas block from the current barrel and install the new barrel onto the receiver as well as put on the front sight base and gas block. Lot of effort and money there for that. You'd probably be better served using that $800 toward something already in the configuration you're wanting. Considering what you seem to want to do with that rifle, you'd be purchasing a money pit. |

| Im pretty new to Maadis myself, but been a true lover of AKs for many many years. Jjust going by todays market $800 for an AK isnt bad. Especially seeing that its not a junk WASR. Im not bashing WASRs, I actually own a decently made one. But another thing to look at here is the ammo. Those tins are going for $300+ all day everyday. Factor that into your cost, thats about a $500 rifle. Especially since AKs that ppl wouldnt have even looked at a yr ago are selling for $900+, which makes this seem like a great investment to me. If nothing else, shoot it a couple of times without doing any modifications. If you just cant stand the thing, Use it to trade for what you really want, or sell it at todays actual market cost and apply that money towards what you want. |

^this was also in my thoughts. that ammo is appealing and there's a scope there, and a mount and that stock can all be traded off or sold to fund what i'd like it to be. i have a small collection of specific guns that were all built to suit my tastes, wants, and needs. i also think it could be a great deal of fun to rebuild the rifle to my likings, or the entire thing could be sold at market value while that tin of ammo stays in my safe. +10000000 to shooting it before any mods are done, that i can promise will happen if i grab this AK. i don't think ~$500 for a working AK with two mags is a bad deal at all no matter the brand in this market.

i just picked this up friday. i got 880 rounds to go with it. pretty sure i did well for $800. there just happened to be a gun show nearby this weekend and i was able to find almost all the accessories i wanted to add to it. i still want to either cut the barrel down, or install a shorter replacement barrel. would the 14.5" barrels from AKbuilder fit this model if i can find a smith to press and headspace it? if not, what barrel should i look for to purchase? i also need a rear sight leaf, the spring is still in place, but the actual sight is gone, will any rear AK sight fit? thanks for any help. the rifle feels solid and i'll probably shoot it sometime this week, and i'll be back with a range report.
