Quoted: On an 18 brl, what length handguard should I be looking to buy 12/15? This will go on a aero m5e1 upper View Quote It's 100% personal preference. I have a couple 15" handguards on my 18" barrels (AR15 and Aero M5), as I tend to prefer covering as much of the barrel as possible. However, I recently put a lightweight ALG 13" rail on my 18" fluted 6.5 Grendel to save a few ounces, and I really like the l ook. Plus, it's a little easier to reach the adjustable gas block under the shorter rail. If you're going with a heavy barrel and don't mind a little extra weight up front, go with the longest rail you like, as it gives you more options for mounting accessories, bipods, etc. If you're going for a light/midweight build, a 12" or 13" rail can save a little extra weight up front and still looks pretty good. A few ounces may not seem like much, but when you can save it near the muzzle (especially with a lightweight barrel), it really helps it balance & swing better for quick transitions if you plan to shoot it away from a benchrest. |

Lon Horiuchi is a massive sack of shit and I hope he burns in hell for eternity after slow, painful death. ETA: On topic, I ran a box of cheap Aguila 7.62 NATO through my rifle and it functioned fine, but the primer strikes seemed kind of shallow. I then tried some Wolf and had light primer strikes. I'm using an MBT, should I swap in a stronger hammer spring? I'll take some pics of the primers and let you guys judge for yourselves. Looks like cratered primers. Headspace issue? Attached File |

Quoted: Now i'm going to introduce you two to reality. The fact of the matter is that the tolerance stacking of any reaction rod with receiver rail or takedown pin capture isn't going to overcome the allowable tolerance of the index pin notch. They may limit movement and deformation of the notch by the pin when too much torque is applied, but they will not stop it from happening altogether. In my world (being prior professional contract armorer and current DoD ordnance), i have yet to shear a single index pin ever, or see it happen ever. This includes the use of receiver blocks, barrel blocks, reaction rods, and some WECSOG shit we used to do back in the day. The fact of the matter is that the PROPER use of torque and quality parts is the most important part of building. If you are shearing index pins, you are DOING someing wrong, or have sub quality parts. Quality parts, when torqued to spec, do not shear pins. Using an overly expensive build tool that actually allows you to hide the fact you have sub-quality parts or allows you to excessivly torque your equipment is NOT going to make you a better builder or make for a better gun. Now, regarding the torque applied to the pin vs. receiver, etc., here's some tips. If you have any play between the notch and index pin(side to side movememt, however small) this can lead to fsb misalignment as generally the play will favor one side more than the other. To account for this, figure out which side the notch favors and choose the most appropriate build tool. If the play is to the left (Operators Point of View or OPV. Meaning looking down the sight s from the rear towards the muzzle), you will want to favor the index pin to the right to keep the fsb/gas block from being canted left. To do this, use a reaction rod type system as the barrel nut will make the receiver pivot with it to the left while keeping the index pin favored right. If your index pin notch is excessive and favors right, use a reciever clamp system as this will cause the barrel and pin to turn to favor to the left. Now for the best part. If you are building correctly with proper tools, parts, and following the procedure, if you only have a single retention method (let's say receiver clamps), you can actually hold the barrel to the side you wish by hand and apply the necessary torque to the barrel nut and the index pin will stay put. Have a fellow armorer hold the fsb to the side you need while performing the final torque and it will stay where you need it to. Meaning there is not enough torque applied to the index pin during a proper build procedure to sheer it off. Unless if course you are using shit parts or a good company happened to put out a rare lemon. Remember, keep the interface between the barrel extension and receiver dry (you want friction here) and apply mil spec moly grease to the threads AND the face of the barrel extension that contacts the barrel nut to reduce friction and applied lateral force to the index pin, and keep your ugga duggas to the bare minimum as required by the instructions, procedure, or tech manual. Everything else is a crutch or an excuse. View Quote IMO, the lack of following the part in red is probably what leads to most of the shearing/bending of index pins. |

First build for me. Wanted to check in and make sure I was correct. Looks like I can pick up the standard M5 upper, barrel and bolt from granite. Is this SLR rail correct for that upper? Will also be using one of SLRs adjustable gas block.

Found a hand guard....whew
Now onto gas block and tube plus muzzle device. Should I look for adjustable .750 block or any low profile? Are interchangeable ar15/10? Stainless gas tube or any in rifle length? Sorry very new at this |

There's no AR10/15 difference, its the barrel size at the gas port (.750 potentially) that matters. Again the gas tube depends on your barrel. |

Pretty excited! I've been wanting an AR-10 for over a decade and with all this election stuff, I pulled the trigger. Today I got my lpk and grip. Tomorrow (Tuesday), I get the buffer assembly. Wednesday I get my M5 receiver set at the FFL. BCG will be here by the end of the week. 20" Ballistic Advantage .308 barrel should ship this week and get it early next week. Build is coming along and I can't wait to assemble it all and shoot it! I'm going for a fde build to match my other AR.

Hmm.... think I made a mistake...
Ordered a surefire muzzle brake-suppressor adapter. Dont have NFA toys and not sure I want to join that game. Would this be fine to use without suppressor? Or should I find something else? |

But use it stand alone without issue?
Would a 3 prong be better? |

Anyone have a MI Combat Handguard on a M5 upper? Would you mind posting a picture of the mate up between the upper and handguard. I want to see how much of the barrel nut is exposed. The old MI you can see all the teeth on the nut, and IMHO it isn’t as pretty. Thanks in advance!!

Right to Bear Arms had the MI handguards in stock just a week ago, aero lpk's, charge handles. Fast ship too. I was on a backorder at Midway for too long and glad I found a handguard when I did. |

I’m guessing you snagged the last 15”. My Criterion 20” 6.5 Creedmoor and M5 lower are here. M5 upper and Aero LPK ordered. Debating on the BCG still as well. I want the JP, but $200 for just the bolt is insane. Especially when I would still need to buy another whole BCG just to use the carrier. @monkeypunch, no I got the 12.65" MI combat handguard, it's going on a faxon 16" barrel/Aero upper.
Attached File Just for reference this image is the exact same MI combat handguard, only in AR-15 size. It has the same barrel nut and same interface, locking piece, as the 308 version, just smaller. It is not the same handguard that shows the barrel nut teeth. I have the MI handguard on a PSA 308 build that does show the teeth, and yeah, not my favorite but it works. |
