Who has the best price including shipping on a couple of boxes of Winchester Ranger .223.

Thanks!

I just got an e-mail about employee prices at Cheaper Than Dirt on ammo and some of the 223/5.56 prices look pretty hot.  If you live in Fort Worth it is a good deal, but as I'm sure you are aware, they rape you on shipping.  They have some Federal Lake City XM193 55 g. for $7.39 a box of 20.

[edited from original]
The 200 round box is a little bit pricey in today's market, unless you value the dry box.
The 800 round box is competitive with market prices for Federal American Eagle 5.56, although still more costly than some other brands.

The online Cabelas catalog has this:
Bulk American Eagle® 5.56mm Tactical® Ammunition Item:XJ-216663
This is a Cabela's Dry-Storage Box with "bulk" ammo [it is one or more of the 200 round factory boxes].

Cabelas catalog item page

The Federal American Eagle 5.56 Tactical Ammunition is $319.99 per 800 rounds, $0.40 per round before tax and travel.

I called ahead to ask:
- Do you have item XJ-216663 in stock?
- Do you have it in the 800 round pack.?

I got the email yesterday and picked up 500 rounds of M856 tracers.  The ammo disease also made me buy 1K of M193 even though I DON'T need any.  After putting the tracers in the cart my fingers involuntarily went back to shopping and clicked on the M193.  Damn fingers.

Howdy!

I'm new here, but not new to shooting.  However, after many years, I just purchased my first AR-15, and I'm tickled pink with my purchase.  With the current political situation, I think I have made a good choice.   I do have a question, and wonder if anyone can help me out.

I would like to purchase ammo for my carbine....and looking at prices, they appear to have gone up over the years (understatement).  OK, I have seen a price of $350.00 per 1000 rounds of brass(?) cased PRVI 5.56 M193 55 GR ammo, shipping is included.  I do believe that it is brass cased, although, not sure about the priming (reloading).

Is this a good price??

Thank you for any info available.
Link Posted: 10/6/2008 9:23:37 PM EST
[#8]
$350 is good.  AIM usually has the best price going and they ask $360 today.
Prvi is good, brass case, and boxer primed.  I haven't reloaded any but the primer is crimped like all mil spec ammo.  This calls for the crimp to be cut back before priming.  I have an RCBS swage but I think there are cutters for this too.
The reloading forum would be the place to find someone who knows WTF.

Copper and brass just went down roughly 75 cents a pound, thats the second big drop in price since this summer, the first price drop was around 50 cents a pound. Gas has gone down quite a bit in my area as well, Regular unleaded is now $2.99 a gallon. During the summer peak I saw $4.53 a gallon for gasoline.

Copper and Brass down $1.25 or so a pound

Gas/Diesel down around $1.50 a gallon

Things are looking good for ammo prices to drop slightly...

I paid $375 for 1000 rounds of Sellier & Bellot .223 55 grain FMJ at a gun show a few months back.

Deal or no deal?

I've shot about forty rounds and they shoot excellent. I just shoot targets or varmints or predators.

.37 cents a round is about average.  S&B is good clean stuff.  I just swiped 2k green tip 5.56 rounds for the same price, though.

Any current deals going on with XM193, or any other 55gr 223?  Looking to buy 1000 or 2 lots of 500.  Need to get some much needed range time with my first/new AR, without killing the bank account.

Aim has some decent prices going on, and one "introductory sale" that includes an ammo can with purchase.  Was trying to see if anyone else, after shipping, could beat aim's prices.

If you are lookning for something to burn up, I'd go with whatever had a brass case and is cheapest.  If you want good ammo for use, I'd go to AIM for PRVI or Natchezss for XM193

Wish I could have, but ended up just getting a 200 round lot of it for roughly $82 delivered.

Any ammo has the potential of "ruining" an AR.  Some rifles eat certain ammo better than others.  You just have to try different brands and loads until you find something that you and your rifle are comfortable with.

XM193 seems to be fairly popular for burning off at the range.  For a cheaper substitute, you could go with a russian round.  People claim russian ammo is the root of all evil when put through an AR, just do a search on brands like Wolf/Brown Bear/Silver Bear/TCW and decide for yourself.

Again...buy a few boxes of each before dumping your wallet for a bulk amount, because you may end up with 1000rnds of ammo that your rifle doesn't like.

Thanks guys...I'll be sure to buy some in small amounts first to see what happens...just don't want to sell the farm on some of the ammo that is higher priced to just shoot it up...

Prvi brass is boxer primed, and can be reloaded just fine after the primer crimp is removed. I tend to swage the primer pocket to make sure it's right.

This really makes me mad. I placed a order for some ammo that went up over the last month while copper, lead and brass prices are plummiting. To top it off they are still chargeing a "FUEL SURCHARGE" even with fuel prices off 45% or more. If not for election I would make them eat the ammo for thanksgiving day dinner before I ordered any at these prices.

I paid 250/1000 shipped from The Armory yesterday, but the lady I talked to on the phone said it was an absolute madhouse and they were selling out of(mostly handgun) ammunition as people were adding it to their shopping carts.  She gave me the impression that they had plenty of .223rem though.

This place has them but the asshats raised the price by five bucks a magazine since Saturday evening. I bought 12 of these mags from them a couple months ago for less than 14 bucks each. Thank goodness i built up my stash over the last year. Anyway, if you need mags I suppose paying 20 bucks is better than not having them.

I'm not aware of any .223 caliber ammo that is  magnetic (unless you count the casing material for certain wolf/bear brands.  M855 is steel tip, but it's not .223 - it's 5.56... I do not know of anyone currently loading SS109 bullets for use in .223 caliber barrels, but that doesn't mean it can't, or isn't being done.

As far as the 7.62x39mm ammo - Some "Black Box" Wolf will be magnetic - some won't...(Lots seem to vary year to year).

Hope it helps...
