Since I've already shot 50 rounds of my 55 grain 5.56 with no problems, I'm leaning towards shooting the rest of my 200 or so rounds, carefully.

I'm gaining more confidence in it as I see the lot numbers of the Kaboom rounds are so close together.  I think I'll be fine...?

I’ve shot 200 rounds of various ones. 5.56 75gr bthp 55gr bthp and the majority was 223 55gr bthp. Checked probably 75% of the brass and it was fine. I will say that when I let a guy borrow my 14.5 at the noveske match and he was shooting 5.56 55gr bthp each round was putting out a fireball from my Surefire brake. Usually it only throws fireballs when the sun starts to get low. I was at a match and guy was running IMI and when we policed brass after the stages the majority of the IMI stuff had blown primers

From all postings, the only lots affected appear to be 55 FMJ.  As far as I can tell, all other lots, including 55 BTHP, are fine.

Think of how many bought this based on price alone and stacked it away oblivious to the potential issues.

It could be years before the whole story is out.

I didn't buy this for price alone.  I purchased the XM193 55gr FMJ 5.56 for 29 cpr incl. shipping from Midway last Aug.  I could've, would've, should've bought Wolf Gold or American Eagle for 26 cpr!  I was intrigued by the newest offering from Frontier / Lake City.  I love Lake City ammo, and I equate Frontier to a premier bullet producer.  What could possibly go wrong?

I will not purchase Frontier Ammo ever again!

Not directed at you specifically.

And agreed, Lake City + Hornady (should) = quality.

The part that blows my mind and where the line is crossed, is their refusal to acknowledge and make it right.  Instead, they are making claims and technical assessments that are factually incorrect.  This is either due to gross incompetence, or fraud - and I have a hard time accepting they are that inept.  I'm not an affected party, and I normally despise lawsuits.  That said, this is a pretty much a case-study for when a class-action lawsuit is appropriate.  Most likely, the threat of such will cause them to crawfish and finally write refunds or send alternative replacements to the affected parties.

My advise to OP, is to contact Frontier and threaten them with initiating a class-action lawsuit if they don't refund the ammo and replace the rifle.  If they're smart, they'll write a check ricky-tick.  This is not advise I would normally give.

And also remember some powders don't have flash suppressants mixed in with them, so that could be a cause of the excessive flash.

Hmmm I have some 75 BTHP in the “bad” serial range referenced here. Apprehensive to try it, I only have a few ARs and none of the uppers are cheap.

The 55 grain FMJ is the culprit under discussion with Lot Numbers previously posted. What 75 grain BTHP "serial" range are you concerned about?

It was more than just the 55 grain FMJ lots that were the subject of problem threads. I spent a bunch of time last week going through all the threads I could find; writing down the lot numbers, weight, problem, etc.

Don’t want to put out bad info based off memory. So, I’ll work on posting everything up later. Just know that it’s not confined to only one frontier loading.

Can you post any links to Kaboom threads with the 75gr BTHP Match ammo?  I have not seen any and I have few hundred round of this ammo.  I need to check and see what lot numbers they have.

I have a few hundred rounds as well.  I keep seeing 55gr, but nothing about 75gr BTHP.  I'm hoping it's fine.  I'll be sending some soon.

I’ve shot 3k of the 55gr of this ammo and haven’t had any issues. In fact it’s been very reliable and somewhat clean for being range ammo. I just saw this thread now and see people have been having issues. This is the first I’ve heard of issues with this ammo.  Lucky me I guess?

I'm awaiting info from Hornady on the specifics of this lot number, exactly what load this is.

SMQ18C849-002 is a 75 gr bullet
I find no reference to that lot number anywhere else on AR15.com, anyone else?

Sorry. Started compiling what I had and got pulled away for some dad things. 2 year olds can be demanding .

Still don’t have it all compiled, but made decent progress. Perhaps I’ll start an “official” Hornady Frontier ammo and issues and thread once it’s all together. Note, I wasn’t the one who claimed the 75 gr example. I think that poster just noticed he had some 75 gr that matched one of the problem lots.

My current list is below. Others I do have that still need to be added to the list include 62 gr FMJ and 68 gr HPBT. Not all are KBs, as I included those with pressure signs (blown primers, cases, etc.)

Hornady Frontier Over Pressure: 62 gr Spire Point, pressure signs and blown primers, Lot #SMQ18C844-002

Witnessed a Kaboom Today: 55 gr FMJ, kaboom and blown primers, Lot #SMQ18C844-003

My AR exploded in my face today: 62 gr BTHP, kaboom and potential jackets rupturing, Lot #SMQ18C847-001

Frontier 55gr boom & damaged extractor: 55 gr FMJ, blown case and damaged extractor; also had a 2nd poster in the thread discuss their friend having bulged cases, Lot # unknown

Another Kaboom with Frontier 5.56 Ammo: 55 gr FMJ, kaboom with blown case, Lot #SMQ18C867-008

Hornady Frontier Possibly Loaded Hotter: Assuming 55 gr (poster said .223), pressure signs (blown primers, split cases, ejector smear), Lot # unknown

Overall, I really want to like this ammo. Planned to do accuracy testing with all the different loading. But I haven’t shot any yet. Given the lot numbers I have, and the “problem” lot numbers, I’m a little apprehensive. Especially with the one in red. As it’s the same lot number as one of the above linked issues.

No problem. Banged it all out of my phone and did the best I could. Actually noticed an error and updated the post. The 3rd one down is actually 62 gr BTHP. Not the 55 gr FMJ I had originally listed.
