I stopped by the local Walmart yesterday and their ammo locker was chock full.   Looked like they had plenty of everything.

my local walmart had their ammo locker broken so they put all the ammo in the back gonna check again today to see if its back up.

Stopped at my local W and cleaned them yet again of 5 boxes Federal 100rds bulk 223 and got another 22 boxes of american eagle. Left nothing. $35 for bulk and 6.95 for AE.

Normally I pay this price for 5.56 online. But I dont care anymore. If I see it and I can afford to buy it - its mine.

I shot some of the Federal Value Pack .223 from Walmart today and it was fine. Will be picking more up to keep from dipping into the stash of M193. It is still $34.95 here.

However the 20 round box of American Eagle 55 grain is $11.99 everywhere here. Walmart, Dick's, Academy are all the same. I don't think so.

Local Academy is fully stocked with multiple 1000 round boxes of both M193 and M855 though.

How to stop buying ammo? Is there ammo rehab?

Is it worth pre-ordering ammo if it may take a couple months or longer to get it in. I am not worried about any ban, import or otherwise, but due to inflation, it might be a small bit more by that time.
I can pre-order Federal 193 for about $330, which is a good deal at the moment.

Here is how I did it to avoid unnecessary ammo or charges. I ordered 2 cases from brownells using $100 pre-paid card. They don't charge you for pre-order. And they can't charge the card when ammo is actually in stock. I'll decide and either cancel the order or provide another payment.

Went to Virginia to see the family at Thanksgiving. Tidewater area. We had a shoot planned at my cousin's farm in NC. I mailed
home some 8mm for my stepfather's Mauser but counted on my cousin to supply everything else. No need. We went to Walmart
and the shelves, while not full, had everything we wanted. Prices were fair. $12.95 for a box of 50 Federal 9mm, 525 rd. boxes
of Winchester .22 were $21.00. Two LGS were out of 8MM, but I was counting on that.

Doesn't seem like this "panic" is anywhere near as bad as '08. Guys took the hint and stocked up when it was available. Maybe
retailers also learned a lesson and were prepared. Most of the places I buy from have plenty and aren't jacking around with prices
increases. Of course all BHO has to do is make a statement here or there and that could change over night.....

In case anyone is wondering about CTD's recent stupid-high price increases, they try to justify it as simple economics here: https://www.facebook.com/#!/cheaperthandirt/posts/10151260655644324?comment_id=221194438¬if_t=feed_comment_reply

Hello,

So will the 5.56 ammo shortage occur again like it did in 2008? Currently I have about 1250 5.56 rounds stockpiled.

We'll know for sure by inauguration day at the latest. Right now, it isn't completely dried up. All Obama has to do is mention anything about guns or ammo,  or worse, some nut goes on a shooting spree. And it won't just be 5.56....most likely anything that goes into a semi-auto of any kind.

Most people who were left high and dry last time (like me) are in better shape this time around, of course there are a lot of new gun owners too. I heard them referred to as "Obama Boomers", sort of like Baby Boomers. A lot of those ObamaBoomers that ran out and bought an AR, a handgun, and 50 rounds of ammo in  2008-2009 haven't thought of a shortage since then.

I am definitely one of those "boomers". I bought a S&W MP-15 Sport last week and love this freakin' thing. I found a few places here locally that carry all the 5.56 i need so i'm confident that i can stock up when need be. Went to the range on Monday and they had bunches of PMC X-TAC XP193 5.56 @ $8/box. I've seen cheaper but i could live with paying $400 per 1000 if things got tough and my main supplier ran dry.

I was around for 2008.  Just be aware that ultimately all your suppliers are buying their ammo from the same distributor.  When it dries up it dries up EVERYWHERE.  The only way you can assure yourself a future price is to stack it deep NOW.  Or have the components and powder on hand to reload.

Make your guess here!! When will the panic buying subside and stocks of ammo rise again?

CTD is taking advantage of their panic'ed customers and making money off theim.

I have no issues with their business practices.    You want ammo; We got ammo; you pay stupid money for our ammo or else not.

It is price gouging no matter how you look at it. They posted $199.99 stripped lowers yesterday and deleted the post quickly after the barrage of people telling them they were nuts. I will not do business with them again.

I ordered 20 boxes, 32.45 cents per round.

The only thing my local wally world carries anymore is Ae .223 and win frangible 5.56 at $10.97-11.97, respectively.  I did order 10 boxes of PMC from PSA at $7.99 a box since they have free shipping going on, I figured I'd try them out to see how I like them.  Who knows, hopefully all the panicked buying will end soon and things will maybe return to a version of normal again.  But, that's probably wishful thinking on my part.

Unless the panic-buyers suddenly start buying range memberships, and taking whole days off to go shooting, this frenzy will be short-lived.

Production will catch up with demand, and prices will fall back to where they were before election season.

Maybe even lower when we go over the fiscal cliff, and the guy who currently thinks he has a few dollars disposable income gets socked with an extra $3,999 federal income tax bill in April.

So you know things are bad when .223 Wolf ammo is just about sold out everywhere online. And I hear Wolf caught wind of the panic buying and is upping their price. I see some places charging the same for Wolf as Lake City was 10 months ago. Guess it's time to play the waiting game.

My guess, is as soon as 2 wars, are over, and when this subsides (and it will, it's no where near as bad as last time), ammo will go lower than in a long time.  I guess by summer, ammo will be $300, or a bit less per K.  Just a guess.  L2

I don't know about you guys but down southeast things have dried out.  Can't find cheap range 5.56 or 223.  Even tried online and it seems everyone is out or selling super high.  Wish my ranges would allow tracers because that is all I can find.  Hope you all are having better luck.

Where all are you looking? I bet I could literally get my hands on 10,000 rounds of .223 before tomorrow evening if I had the spare cash lying around. All within a 20 minute drive.

Checked at lunch time today, Larry's Pistol and Pawn on Memorial Parkway in Huntsville, Alabama, has the real NATO XM193 55gr FMJ for $190/500rd case. They

had about 20 cases on show floor, no idea if any in warehouse. I don't know if they'll ship it to anyone, Larry's is VERY busy place. Sad, this same ammo was going for

$145 when I bought my AR last August.

For what its worth, reloading components are still available.  After the last election,  primers were hard to find.

My local gun stores haven't really jacked up prices on factory ammo because they were high to start with.

My local store always has the best pricing on EVERYTHING, guns, ammo, mags. But their price for 500/Fed XM193 has gone up $45 in

Two months. What do all of you think about the current price spike, will prices ever come back down, or are they here to stay?

Prices aren't too bad compared to the last election in 2008. It was 55 cents per round for M193. There wasn't any M855 until November 2009. I still can get both. M193 is "only" 40 cents locally.

I just got my first AR and the timing sucks for ammo!  I hit on the Cabellas deals and when I ordered online it said it was in stock.  However, when an empty dry box showed up I had to call to find out that the ammo is backordered until after Christmas.  Dang.

Local stuff has been pretty cleaned out; my local Wally World only had some Remmington for about 1$ a shot.  Local Scheels Sports had Federal 1000 rd, and I bought some re manufactured for about 43 cents per.  I hope this IS just panic buying and that prices stabilize after everyone stocks up.

PNW Arms has just released 200,000 rounds of 5.56 M193. I know nothing about this company other than Chris Costa endorsed them via Facebook as a place to get ammo if you were taking a class. It is a little pricey, but if you can't find anything anywhere else then it doesn't matter. 200 rounds for $85.00 and free shipping over $250.00.
