Heavy, yeah.  I handed mine to BrianNH the other night and he said "wow" - not from the overwhelming coolness, but the heft .

I think the thing is we never detach our "quick detach" accessories

Well, how's it shoot?
Could you use it with a 3X magnifier, NV monocular?
I like the chevron, can you use it as a BDC, how many MOA is it from the tip to the inside V?
4/6/2006 7:22:09 PM EDT
[#18]
A friend of mine got one, it's nice, but not enough to pry me away from my beloved ACOG
I think it's too bright for NV.
4/6/2006 7:54:25 PM EDT
[#19]
Just got it today....
I had one of the first gen Tripowers, and it shot better than the Aimpoints dot for me, and seems more precise as well (doesnt cover the target). The new Tripower was designed to work with NVG. Trijicon lowered the tritium brightness of the chevron a bit to work better with NV. (I cant afford NV) I have seen others give positive reports on using the Aimpoint 3x with the Tripower. I would like to try one with my Tripower before I invest in one. The battery life doesnt compare to the Aimpoint but you rarely need it on the Tripower. The fiber optic and the tritium handle 90-95% of the illumination duties for me.

Edwin: Here's a link that gives all the specs of the chevron: Tripower PDF

Here are some pics that bolster posted in a different thread:

Duffy and or other MRP owner/users.......

you have had them a while now and I am curious what your experience has shown. Is its advantage the barrel interchangeability, the rigidity of a mono upper, or other?

would you do it again, or would you go with one of the new rail systems - or for that matter - one of the tried and true products?

I'm struggling with the decision of how to outfit an SBR lower I have and  I like what I have read about the MRP, but...... it isn't cheap ($1,200-$1,300 range).

these real-world reviews are helpful

TIA

I have two MRPs, so I obviously did again. Just waiting for the 6.8 barrels & bolts.

red,
It's an awesome platform, the continuous rails and rigidity offered by the MRP were nowhere to be found on any single product when it was introduced.  Since then, Vltor, and soon, LaRue, will all offer MRP like uppers sans the quick barrel change feature, which wasn't what I bought mine for anyway.  I'm not going to the 6.8mm camp, so if I were in the market for an upper with continuous rails and rigidity offered by the single piece design, I'd wait for Vltor and LaRue.  I think I'm gonna get the Vltor anyway when it comes out

My minor gripes about the MRP: weight, price, and non standard barrel.  I think none of which, with the exception of weight, could be easily addressed in the present design.  It's time consuming and expensive to produce, and the barrel change mechanism precludes the use of standard barrels.

Since I have lots of QD devices, the MRP's rails are a real boon to me, on the flip side, I also worsened its weight problem because I piled on these QD toys, hence the day and night configs in the above post and pics

Duffy, Redfisher

What is highlighted in blue was the original A-List for me concerning the MRP. But, the 6.8SPC barrel bolts was always the end game for the MRP. I have enough 5.56MM weapons. I am cleaning house of all the 5.56MMs I have with the exception of some VERY specific RECCE's and carbines in 5.56MM. If the Vltor, LaRue and Colt 102X are available in 6.8, then I will be very interested.

The quick change barrel didnt mean much to me until the 6.8 barrels/bolts were available. Now that they are on their way, I am a lot more excited about it. I've got a set on order already.

Thanks for the follow-up.

I suspected as much, but without having handled one outfitted with the MRP I couldn't be sure.

The new products from Vltor and or LaRue - and I guess Daniel Defense as well - look promising.

I have never felt the need for 'other calibers', but for those like pcurtis and NAG who have that interest, it would make more economic sense to have interchangeability of the MRP than have to have to have an all new gun for the other caliber.

Many question whether the 6.8 SPC would get any traction, but with the volume of information available from Iraq/Afghan war fronts - there is apparently a growing possibility of it happening.

The dilemma is not whether it is a more effective round, it is that the Pentagon has so much of its infrastructure built around the 5.56, that it is a monumental task -logistically and economically- to introduce any new caliber.

If it does happen (6.8 en-mass) The MRP (and MGI) strategy of interchangeability could prove to be on target.

I have a 16" rifle-length MRP and I'm curious -- Does anyone know how much weight would be saved by switching to a standard a flattop upper with LaRue 12" rail? IE what is the weight premium of the MRP over a similarly configured FF rail?

The CQB (which I have with a 16" barrel) has 10 vent holes cut into the rail making a 9" rail. The one pictured has a 10.5" barrel.

The Rifle length has 15 vent holes making just over 12"

when meateater upgraded his ar15 with a mrp upper, he sold me/ downgraded his used dpms m-4 rasII with aimpoint upper for $900 bucks. i could have bought a mrp! if i spend a little more greenbacks and i could have been looking cool like duffy, smglee, and meateater with their mrp's and stuff. now all i have to do is find a person/ sucker to buy my dpms upper...

Question regarding what kind of ammo everyone is shooting from the LMT MRP.

I am ordering up some Hornady 75gr HSM in 5.56.
I plan on ordering some XM193, Q3131A, and M855 for general purpose/plinking.

Does anyone shoot .223, like, Fed AE 55?

I shoot everything through mine.  Meateater here bought some reloads and it almost caused a kaboom, he credits the extra heft of the Mike Rock barrel, for it may have blown up his MRP and lower, as it was, only the barrel is ruined, and it blew the magazine floor plate out.  I'll let him talk about it if he wants.

Thanks.

Yes the can is an AAC M4-2000 and if you are thinking about getting one, go do it. I love to shoot and the can makes it more enjoyable.

From my experience, the AAC can is the way to go. On my rifles, there is no change in the POI, my groups are smaller, and it only takes a couple seconds to move it to a different rifle.

Could you snap a picture with the can off the mount?  How far back from the mount does the can extend?  Did you need to do anything special to the barrel to make it work with the mount and suppressor?

Thanks for putting up with the questioning!

Thanks!  Those are exactly what I was looking for!  Looks like that combo would work well with a 14.5" barrel and a rifle length MRP upper...

Let's see that combo will only cost:
14.5" CL barrel - $366
AAC M4-2000 - $895
AAC mount - $95
Tax Stamp (SBR) - $200
Tax Stamp (Can) - $200

Not cheap but what fun hobbies are?

Question for those using MRPs

Im going to be picking up one of these soon, and was wondering a few things.

1. Do the 2 screws that hold the barrel in need to be tightened on a regular basis and how often. I just want to be sure im doing the right things when i get it. Im thinking that the more you shoot it, the more these might loosen ? Dont know, havent had any chances to see one up close.

2. Anyone notice much difference in the POI when using different barrels ? I had read someplace that it was a concern surrounding the MRP when it first came out, wondering what people have encountered now that there has been a little time to use them.

Thanks for any help
