ok, my question is if I do left handed carry, is there a difference in the instructions? My brain always short-circuits when I try to figure out stuff like this. I bought enough for 2 sets so Ill build one exactly like the .pdf instructions and then use that as a mirror image, if necessary. Thanks a bunch! mike |

Posted this in the dupe of this thread in the "Slings and other accessories" forum. Just a heads up about Strapworks.COM, they are going to be adding steel HK hooks to their on-line store. They will be about $6. They have the zink HK hooks now for about $4. I'm not connected to Strapsworks in any way other than being a very satisfied customer. Can be made or small strap bought. #2 = Other side of stock. #3 = This is the adjustable slider on the main end. You can either sew this or make one with a tri-glide. The tri-glides on either side of it allow you to adjust the size of the sling. Tight or loose. #4 = The whole she-bang. As you can see it is one big adjustable loop. #5 = Shows the rear set-up. The smal strap in #1 holds the end of the main line down. #6 = Shows the front end detail. The end is secured with a tri-glide on the sling loop. Material list is: 15 feet of black tubular webbing (4.54 meters for you metric folks). This is the same mil-spec climbing webbing that you find at REI and the likes. Didn't use all of it, have enough left over for another sling. At $.25@ ft that = $3.75. 5 - 1" Tri-glides. Came 4 to a pack @ $1.00 a pack. Had to buy 2 packs. So that was $2.00. 1 - 1" Fastex Side Release Buckle. 1 pack of 2 @ $1.25 a pack. 1 - 1" Fastex Ladderloc Buckle. 1 pack of 2 @ $.80. 1 - 1" Fastex Loop Loc. 1 pack of 2 @ $.80. You can substitute a D ring for the same price. (single sided tri-glide) So the grand tally is $8.60 without tax, and I have enough for another sling. You can sew some parts or put them together with buckles. p.s. I got everything at my local REI. You can also www it. Enjoy. |

I haven't read every post in the very long thread, but I was wondering... is there any reason that you can't use 2" strapping instead of 1 1/2"?? I went to no kidding - 10 different places today from harware to Home Depot to fabric stores and NObody (including two Ace stores) has 1 1/2" webbing. |

Well 2 emails with questions to strapworks have gone unanswered. I did not want or need the left hand release part... it just made it more complicated that necessary. So with the help of chakachim and JBowles (many thanks guys!) I got what I could locally and made my own. I made one that is a duplicate of a Tacsling I already had and I made two more that were slightly different. I used the tight strap and D ring method like these two guys as opposed to an extra 'leader' to connect them. They are very tight and I set them up in exactly the right position for the carry I wanted. I not only used my brain for some VERY 3 dimensional planning, but after almost 30 years from a sewing class in High School, I broke out the missus machine and sewed everything instead of just Velcroing it. It has all come out very tight, very strong and very nice looking. While I was working on these in mock ups, it also gave me some ideas for a fully adjustable single sling thing. I just gotta get strapworks to answer my questions and get an order in so I can get to work on them too. Does anyone know where I might find some pads of the correct size? By pad I mean the usually free-floating pad that is on the strap of softsides briefcases, etc. I think I want to try to use some but I don't want to have to buy a piece of luggage to get one! Here's a variation on the design that I, um, borrowed from a prominent 3-point sling maker. I think this is simpler, but it requires some sewing skills. Basically instead of using two dual-adjusting buckles, substitute one cam lock and one single-side adjusting buckle. The cam lock and the buckle are joined together as a separate unit and then added to the sling as shown below. Notice how the connecting link loops through the lower portion of the buckle's adjusting ladder and the sling passes through the upper portion. Flipping open the cam lock allows the additional slack for switching to the opposite shoulder. That way there's no way to get confused about which buckle to release when under stress, in low light, etc. ETA: Thank you GGLLGGLL, Strapworks, and Nexus! |
We went to my Mom's house and took a crash course on using a sewing machine. She let me use her Euro-Pro Shark. Note the 'Gooseneck' lamp  NOTES: 1) Use a strong polyester thread, not regular cotton. However, the first thread I tried was a heavy 'button' type and was too thick to properly feed through the machine. 2) Use a heavy needle for the webbing. I broke two light ones before I figured that out. 3) 'Lock' the ends of stitch lines by reversing the machine, preferably more than once. 4) As usual, it takes some practice, but eventually you get hang of it. Hey, isn't this how Tactical Tailor got started?

Hey guys I build a tac sling over the weekend using the instructions provided here. It turned out great. I made it for my friend who works for our local PD. He will be using it on duty on his AR. I've made a formatted PDF and hosted it on my site for download. If Matt wants me to take it down, I will, but I noticed that the original is gone and the other one posted was a bit cluttered for my tastes. I vote for a PDF of this (this one or another, doesn't matter to me) being added to the downloads section. I'll be ordering my supplies for making 2 of these so that, once I complete my first AR (ordering that this week), I'll be able to slap one of these on it. Thanks for the excellent work Matt! |
