I have a question regarding buying the eotech with either gg&g accucam or larue mount.  What is the purpose of having the quick detach mounts other than being able to quicky attach and detach?  Do they help keep the zero on an eotech where it might otherwise lose the zero if removed without the mount?

That is one reason for the QD mounts but the Larue actually raises the Eotech enough to get a lower third co-witness with your BUIS. I have never used the GG&G mount but I believe it just replaces the set screw with a QD lever. Hopefully someone else will chime in with more experience with the GG&G mount.

It seems like the 1/3 cowitness is the way to go, as i've had coworkers suggest this.  Do you know if the RRA Dominator is 1/3?  They say it places the dot above the front sight post, so i guess that would put the sights in the lower portion of the Eotech window.

Thanks for the reply to my question.  I'm thinking I'll need to go with either the Larue mount of the RRA mount.  I've already put a buis from GG&G on my rifle, but i think having the fixed sight with the Dominator might be my best option.  There's definately a hell of a lot to choose from.  hock.gif

Since you already have the GG&G BUIS I'd say run it with that and the EOTech on the rail for a while and see if you think you want the sight higher (and if the GG&G is a flip-up, if you want the rear sight up all the time).  Then consider the riser mount if you do.

Between the RRA and LaRue risers I'd pick the LaRue.  Besides allowing you to use a flip-up rear sight if you want, it also allows you to quickly remove the EOTech without removing the iron sight.  An example of when you might want to do that was posted in the training forum a while back where the EOTech lens fogged up so bad he couldn't see through it at all, making co-witness not work either.  With the LT you could pull the lever and be back in action.  With the RRA you'd be stuck.

Can you not remove the Eotech from the RRA mount, and leave just the mount on the receiver?  I'm wondering if you could use the mount with the accucam or Larue qd mount.

Thanks for the response

Sure, but the EOTech-to-Dominator mount isn't QD without a coin to turn the thumbscrew.  The LT mount is QD levers.

The Dominator provides an absolute co-witness. For me, the sight picture is way too busy for accurate and fast shooting. I actually ordered my RRA with the Dominator but quickly realized it wouldn't work for me. That's why I switched to a Matech folding BUIS. With the BUIS down, I get a good view of the entire EOTech window. I may try some kind of riser to make it a lower 1/3 witness.

I will soon add an optic requiring a co-witness (EO, AimPoint).

Has anyone with either of these tried the rear aperature from weaponsolutions?

Just looks to me to be an easier and faster acquisistion

I was under the impression that the aperture rear was easier and faster than the notch.  And that notch looks a bit too narrow to be fast, but it's hard to judge from the picture.

Here's my idea for a secondary short-range BUIS system used on conjunction with magnified main optic (in this case a ACOG TA11)

http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=5918
http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=5920

I'm using a pair of YHM 45 deg offset mounts (3 rail) and their solid A2 rear sight.  The front is a standard detachable.  The front gas block is a JP adjustable.

This is a competition mod.  The ACOG is a fantastic piece of glass and is an excellent scope for the 3-gun/multigun games.  However, 3.5x is a bit much with targets <25 yds.  Shooting occluded is an option, but not predictable enough for me, yet.

I'm planning on shooting it this weekend.

So what am I looking at for cowitness with supposedly cowitnessing rails between a LaRue 9.0 and an LMT flattop? My plan is Troy folding BUIS front and back with EOTech 552.A65 HWS. Will I see lower 1/3 or absolute?

See my photo above LaRue 9.0 and Colt 6721 flat top (same as my LMT flat top), I tried my EOTech 551 on my Colt with Troy FDE BUIS and it had an absolute cowitness.

If you want to have a lower 1/3 cowitness use a LaRue EOTech mount or other equivalent EOTech mounts.

I'm more interested in the co-witness information than pics of how it would look.  For co-witness purposes all BUISs are the same height, so co-witness depends on the optic and the mount.

So an EOTech using the built-in mount will absolute co-witness?  Then an EOTech on any mount like the LaRue or RRA would be lower 1/3 co-witness?

Aimpoint in ARMS 22M68 w/o spacer is absolute?  With spacer, straight or cantilever is lower 1/3?
GG&G Cantilever is which?  This seems to be the mount cloned by the one included with the SPOT and jackyiscxd's clones.
<hr height=1px color=black noshade>

I cant comment on the EOTech because I dont have one.  I do however have the aimpoint and ARMS 22M68 mount and spacer.

Aimpoint in 22M68 mount with the spacer = lower 1/3 cowitness.
Aimpoint in 22M68 mount with out spacer = no cowitness.

I just tried it out, if you dont use the riser (spacer) while mounting on a flattop with the standard "F" front sight block and a Troy BUIS the Aimpoint dot will be too far down on the FSB...no cowitness.

Now if you use the ARMS sleeve (another M1913 rail that mounts on the flattop to give you a slightly higher mounting point) I *think* you can just use the 22M68 mount w/o spacer and you will have a cowitness.

Let me know if that makes any sense.

What if you use the smaller spacer with the Aimpoint, would that give you an absolute cowitness? It looks like it is half as high as the full spacer that most people use.

This is a great thread, it's going to help me decide on the right optic for me. ACOG is too much money for me, so I am narrowing between the Eotech and the Aimpoint.

A lot of people indicate that the Eotech is too busy with the circle and the dot. I noticed a version with just a dot, would this be preferred over the circle dot?
11/20/2006 11:59:14 AM EDT
[#23]
I've never heard of anyone actually using an EOTech with just the dot.  My first thought would be that the 1 MOA dot would be too small to pick up quickly.

I thought the big circle is what supposedly makes the EOTech faster than the Aimpoint?

Except for scopes that require a long eye relief distance, why use an elevating rail or extension rail, if maximum high scope rings are available? Millet for example has some really high Weaver style rings. Does a normal scope such as a 3x9, 4x 12, or 4x16 require having to have an extension rail, or even an elevating rail?  I do realize the flat top receivers definitely  require elevation for sure.

To get the center of the scope at approximately the same height as the iron sights you need to have about 3/4" to 7/8" between the top of the flat-top rail and the bottom of the scope (1" tube).  That's a lot of elevation--more than most rings designed for normal rifles have--and if you have a 50+mm lens you might need more than that.

Most scopes have enough eye relief that you need to put the front ring forward of the front of the receiver.  I have a 4-16x on one AR in an Armalite 1-piece with offset and my dad has a 3-9x in the same mount on his.  Both are all the way forward on the receiver and neither of us shoot all the way to nose-to-charging-handle.  I have a 2-7x in extra-high rings on another and it's barely high enough and barely far enough forward at 7x.  It really should have an offset mount, but I didn't want to spend that much on that one.

Mike,

Thanks for the reply. I was looking at a set of Millet extra-high rings that are 1.025 inch tall. I'll wait till I get the scope and have someone hold it in position as I shoulder the rifle and see where it ends up for best view and comfort.

I know, I know, it's not some uber tacti-cool name brand scope but for my civilian needs it works just fine.  I think I spent about $100 for scope, mount, and rings total.  It's a good noob step until my skills require me to move up to something better.

The scope I used it a NcStar 4x30.  Supposedly it is made in the same factory as the Tasco stuff.  Like I said earlier the ring/mount unit that came with the scope originally were crap so take the scope with you to your local gun shop and find the mount and rings that fit correctly.  Like I said it was about $59 for the scope at the gun show and $35 for the rings and mount at the gun shop.  It's cheap but it works until I can afford something a lot better.

I almost always shoot from a benchrest at paper at 100+ yds.
Will soon upgrade to a 24inch varminter/match AR shooting targets at 150-200 yds.

Since weight and size are not a consideration, is it a problem other than aesthetics and a purist point of view?

What risers and rings should i look at? (BELL DIAM 52-53mm)

I shoot best when my checkweld is FAR back on the stock -
ON my present optic, the eyepiece is 2 inches+ behind the reciever!!

I milled my carry handle top section off, screwed a weaver base to the bottom bit after painting and mounted the Eotech.  I don't like the Eotech co-witness thing but wanted to keep fixed sights on this close-range 9x19 gun.  I have to remove the Eotech to use the irons but the cheek weld isn't bad when using the high Eotech; certainly good enough for knocking steel plates at 9x19 ranges out to 50m.

I have not seen any RRA Dominators.  Is this because they are too new or because of other reasons?  It appears they have two set screws about an inch apart on one end roughly under the rear hood.  I wonder if the remaining length of rail could accidently be pushed to change point of aim on the Eotech and affect accurancy.  Financially it makes sense to get a RRA Dominator because it is BUIS and riser combined, but I haven't really seen anyone address the possiblity that rail could be misaligned with the rest of the upper.
